Rasheed is a convicted felon. He’s perceived as dangerous, uneducated, and a threat to anyone he encounters. Aubree is the savvy and beautiful daughter of a C.E.O. And when he gets to know the real her, he sees a woman that’s really unhappy under her wide smile, and seemingly perfect life. When an unexpected connection forms between them, they both have a difficult choice to make. What if you met your soul mate, but they had nothing to offer you except pure and unconditional love? Is that all it would take for you to be happy? They say “Love conquers all.” But sometimes, love alone isn’t enough!
Institutionalized is a book that is long overdue for society. It takes a realistic view point into the personal, mental, emotional and financial struggles of both the incarceration and subsequent release of inmates from the penal system. The added layer to this book is that it also focuses on trials of maintaining a romantic relationship with a rehabilitated ex-felon through those struggles. The author sheds light from the perspective of the former inmate, Rasheed and his lover, Aubree.
The love between Rasheed and Aubree was undeniable and highly enjoyable to watch unfold. Their love story truly reeled you into them as we got to know these two characters. The author does a wonderful job displaying the mindset of a man transitioning from a criminal state of mind into a productive member of society. Through Aubree the essence of real love and living your best life is revealed through her testament of trying to find a balance of pleasing others and fulfilling her own needs and wants.
This story was a joy to read especially the timed shocked factors and the romance scenes. Whew! Some areas could have been explored more in depth to have a more thorough ending. Yet, it was still a solid and an enjoyable book and one that we recommend!
A great read realistic situations. I really related to rasheed and I know A lot of aubree's in the world. Nothing like a strong minded loving, caring, with the desire to follow her own path. It's always a woman who has your back! Bravo!
First time reading this author's work and I really liked this book. What drew me in first was the title, I love one word titles. The cover also had me intrigued. Rasheed was, on the surface, your typical dope boy serving time. He was the man before he went to prison, had the money, clothes, women and fear in the streets. Once he's stripped of everything we see that he's not as invincible as perceived. He's been inside for 11 years. Aubree's the good girl, rich, ambitious but afraid to let her dad down. She wants to please him by marrying someone she does not love, barely likes half the time. Aubree and Rasheed had alot more in common than they think. The trials and tribulations they face to be together are real. The book explores whether we should follow our heart or play it safe, give in or let go. Some events I thought would go a certain way, but I was pleased that the situation turned out the way it does. Follow your heart or your mind??? That is the question
For a romance story, this was pretty heavy. It realistically portrayed the struggles of re-entering society after being imprisoned. How do you start over after you've paid your debt but no one trusts you enough to hire you? What about the significant other? Does he or she stay still and serve the time with you? In this story, Rasheed had help from a non-profit that helped with transition but fell in love with the director, turning both their worlds upside down. They risk everything to be together. But will Rasheed rise to the task or will he bring Aubree down with his sinking ship? Rasheed is hanging on to his freedom by a thread. I loved this story despite the characters' flaws. There were some intense moments where I wasn't sure how this would play out, but the ending was what I had hoped for.
I have never read this author until I paid attention to an alert from AAMBC. Since I work in this type of environment and just read book club read: An American Marriage, my curiosity piqued and decided to give this book a go.
Not many of us, unless you have a relative or partner, that is locked up and the ins and outs it takes to make a relationship work after so many years. L.R. Jackson has written a must-read book on love and happiness from behind bars, and finds true love when released, and it seems like an Urban Cinderella story in reverse.
It was worth the purchase to see a happy ending. I liked it, yet I hoped to love it. 3.25
Side note: *Niagara Falls is near the border of Canada (Buffalo, NY), but do not need a pass-card or passport to enter (i.e. I went less than a year ago, 4/2017) but this is true to cross the border of Canada. I was visiting family in NY, and this is how I know personally, but sometimes as an author we can research or presume by hearsay. One typo: alter should be altar*
