How to love the skin you're in – an inspirational lifestyle book by the world’s leading body acceptance activist. ‘Your body is not an ornament – it is the vehicle to your dreams.’ When was the last time you wore a bikini without a care in the world? Did a bomb in the pool? Or participated in an activity that gave you such a thrill you almost wet your pants? (Or you actually did!) Taryn Brumfitt – Director of award winning documentary Embrace and fiercely passionate champion of women – has inspired over a million people across the world to embrace their bodies. Her message is urgent, critical, and incredibly inspiring. Learn to accept your body for all the wonderful gifts it brings you and reject the destructive fake images we are bombarded with every day. Embrace Yourself is the ultimate ‘how to’ guide to loving your body at every shape and size. Do you hate your body and want to learn how to let go of the unhappiness it brings? Do you just want to reach a greater sense of body-loving nirvana? If the answer is yes, then this book might just change your life. It’s time to access your joy. It’s time to Embrace Yourself.
A lover of life, people and most of all, her husband and three children, Taryn Brumfitt is the founder and infectious voice behind the Body Image Movement – a global movement to shift the way women think about themselves, and in turn, feel about their bodies.
Writer, speaker and free spirit, Taryn is an internationally recognised positive body image activist rubbing shoulders with the likes of Beyoncé and Kate Moss in Brigette magazine’s acclaimed ‘Women of The Year’ awards and with her powerful message reaching over 100 million people worldwide via social media.
A keynote speaker and presenter, Taryn is most passionate about creating a generation of empowered women through delivering her seminar Developing Daughters and Supporting Sons and her online program Unstoppable.
I’m a fan of The Body Image Movement so I wanted to really love this book, but I just found it didn’t tell me anything that I hadn’t already heard before. At times it almost felt like there was more effort put into the photography and the overall appearance of the book than the written content. Having said that, if you’re new to the idea of body positivity and haven’t read much about it before, this book could do wonders for you, so read it! :)
This book has a positive message and is nicely put together with lots of photos and an aesthetic design. However, I felt the writing lacked some substance and did not present any new ideas/information. Taryn also spent several pages discussing the process of creating of her documentary, which did not particularly interest me. A quick easy read, but nothing memorable.
#netgalley #embraceyourself
I listened to the Audiobook version, which made the experience more fun and a little cheeky while listen through and along with Taryn's personality. It's nice to hear such passion in her voice as to why and where her motto of 'embrace yourself' comes from. I do stand by a lot of the things she says and am curious now to go and watch the documentary she made now.
After watching the “Embrace” documentary, I was keen to read Taryn’s book. It’s very easy reading with some wonderful photographs to inspire one to embrace themselves.
An important topic, which I believe most women could learn a lot from. How can we embrace our bodies and find a deep satisfaction from being truly content with who we are? It does make you think, especially as the mother of an impressionable six year old.
I received an advanced reading copy of this book. This is one of those books that came in to my life at just the exact right time. Taryn is encouraging women to Embrace their bodies no matter their faults or flaws. We are all beautiful and we should learn to love that about ourselves. When you love your body, you will want to exercise and eat the right foods as your body deserves to be looked after. You don't have to run or go to the gym, just go roller skating with the kids or dance the night away. Movement is what counts, not punishing calorie counting. The same is said of food - respect yourself and what you put in your body and you are living the fine life. As well as being about Taryn's journey to Embrace (including a section on the documentary) there are small sections that are from other women who are encouraging women to embrace their own minds and bodies and love themselves for who they are. This concept is not new but their energy and passion for it soaks in to your very soul. As I began reading this book, I teared up as there was a lot here that I could relate to, in that moment. Her words have left me knowing that I deserve to be happy and the best way for that to happen is to say 'F@#k It' I am who I am and I love me so you should too. It was a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside when that message hit home.
A thought provoking read for anyone with either an interest in the body positive movement, trying to overcome their own self loathing/self criticism of their bodies and also for those who chose to judge/criticise people for the bodies they are in. Told with humour from the authors own life experiences and interspersed with words of inspiration and wisdom from other well known people who also part of the body positive movement. It's hard once you have finished this book to not see both your own body in a more positive light and to be less critical of the bodies of other people around you. #embraceyourself #tarynbrumfitt #tea_sipping_bookworm #litsy #goodreads #amazon#kindle #bookqueen #inspiringread #bodypositivemovement
More like a 3.5 I wanted to totally love this book, but I mostly just 'liked' it. I would still recommend it, if you were interested. Unfortunately, it was written in a way, where I can't recall any lasting 'take-aways' other than the media and societal expectations have distorted our thinking so much that we tend to loath our bodies regardless. Personally, I found the injections of other women's stories and comments disruptive to the flow of the book. I much preferred the documentary. If you are interested in a more academic book with the same message, I would highly recommend "Health At Any Size" by Linda Bacon.
I found this book really inspirational to listen to and definitely took on board some of the key points. What was hard though was listening to the narration. Sorry Taryn, but I think you should have either organised a professional narrator or rerecorded it. You took pauses in places you shouldn't have and then didn't pause at full stops so it was hard to follow at times. I would definitely recommend this book though for what it stands for and I will definitely be watching the documentary 'Embrace'.
I wanted to love this book. I've suffered with poor body image my whole life however, I have slowly been accepting as I've gotten older. I felt the author focused more on weight and shape which didn't fit entirely with my experience. There was also a lot of emphasis on her experience after having children, which is probably true for most. I felt more empowered in my after having children so I couldn't relate. Probably a good read if you're a mum struggling with changes to your body and weight/shape.
2.25 stars- the end of the book made exact sense of what this whole book had been, which had been an advertisement for the programmes & workbooks Brumfit sells. Don't get me wrong- aspectz were insightful & challenged beliefs & values as intended by the author, but sounded overall like it was trying to promote rather than fully 'embrace' as the title suggests. I also don't think the audiobook helped with this. Overall, a bit of a disappointing read for me.
As a parent of teenaged girls, I need all the help I can get. If you’re familiar with Taryn’s work already this won’t add a huge amount, but does add some background to the making of the movie Embrace, and was an enjoyable listen. Your body is not an ornament. That’s a phrase my daughters are going to hear a lot.
Nothing overly profound or messaging we haven’t heard before but something I really needed to be reminded of.
“‘Summer bodies are made in winter’ have you heard that one before? What a crock of absolute shit! Let it be known that bodies are made when sperm fertilises an egg - that’s how a body is made”
After seeing the documentary this was a good follow up. The documentary had more impact on the whole but as a parent to a wonderful daughter birth the documentary and the book give me plenty to think about.
I watched the documentary and have now listened to the book. I was hoping for more substance. I really think human beings are more complex and body image is so personal (for me anyway) it is definitely not just the flick of a switch. This is superficial and lacks depth.
Chose this book because I loved the documentary. The book has a very positive message but was not quite what I expected. I felt the book was mostly the story/ „making of“ of the movie and didn’t have any new aspects to it.
I listened to this on audible. I loved the message, of course. Hearing it from the sensibility of halfway around the world was both affirming, and yet discouraging that it’s needed.
Food for thought....thinking differently about exercise and moving is definitely top of my priorities now after reading this...as well as watching the Embrace dvd....
This was a decent supplement to Embrace, the documentary and Embrace You, the course but not as profound as either. It's a nice refresh to help you along you way to Embracing!
