Wayward Mates #1

Brought to Heel

Rate this book
Before he claims his mate, she must be brought to heel.

Skylar Owen is not used to taking orders from anyone and the last thing she wants in her life is an alpha who will demand her submission, but her world is turned upside down after a band of rogue wolves attacks her small, all-female pack. Ordered to disband her pack so that she can be matched with a mate, Skylar defies the Ruling Council, only to be hunted down and captured.

Though he can tell Skylar will be trouble the moment he sets eyes on her, Dylan Grainger knows how to tame a wayward woman, and it isn't long before the beautiful, feisty redhead is tearfully promising obedience as her bare bottom is soundly spanked. But Dylan quickly realizes that Skylar is much more than just a headstrong female in need of an alpha's firm-handed correction.

With each passing day, he grows more certain that she is his mate, and he knows that soon he must claim her, mark her, and take her hard and thoroughly. But will she resist her instincts, or will her body's response to his bold dominance leave her in no doubt that she belongs to him?

Awful just flat out awful

First of all if the author was going to continue this as a series why in the world did she pretty much wrap the entire story up in this one?! The second book is about Darby and the alpha from New Orleans she was very dead set against mating him and I could see writing a second book about them had he just taken her and left. However they had already mated, marked, claimed, the whole shebang! But getting back to this story it was so long and drawn out and eye rolling boring!! I swear every chapter was the same exact conversation with a different character! If I had to read one more time about the mating ins and outs of knotting and all that other B.S. I was going to hurl my phone! Let's not forget the million times each and every alpha had to say How Naughty Mates end up over their mates knee with their backsides red. NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY God help me I hate that word now LoL

The plot sounded great, but unfortunately the quality of the writing didn't deliver much. It's all TOLD, via tedious dialogue, so we are told names, and pack name, and role in the pack, just on and on. The culture is male dominant, so women do what they're told. I had to laugh after the H had told her endlessly that he was going to 'knot' her, it was going to last for 3 hours and then when it finally happened, it was all over in a paragraph or two! Like the book, he was all talk, low action, and I think both she and I were short changed. Won't continue with this series - the look on the heroine's face on the cover says it all, she's not impressed and either was I.

Shifter Romance with Fated Mates

I love the whole Fated Mate thing. Is it a Trope? I kind of think it is and I really love it. This is the first book in a series with Shifters and their Fated Mates and all of the women are strong and feisty, but they eventually submit to their Fated Mate after some spanking. I really loved this story and I loved 🥰 how it was nicely steamy. This book has a very nice HEA and I am going to be reading the other books in the series next. I recommend this book highly if one likes Shifter Romance with Spanking.

I did not end up finishing it. I got 56% through it and probably a solid 40% of that I gritting my teeth and trying to power through (I also tried and failed to finish "Claimed and Mated" by the same author so I could tell immediately when things were starting to take a turn). I wanted to like this one, I can get behind d/s and alpha male themes and I read the warnings before I "bought" (I have KU) so this isn't a case of me just not being aware of what I was getting.

I found the society described to be so patronizing, offensive, and truly damaging to the female characters that it was abusive. The beginning was so heart-wrenching where the female pack members were pushed out of their home and forced into this awful life they didn't want and to go from that beginning to very rapidly them all submitted and being remorseful of their actions was very hard to read. The men being so pleased with themselves over how great they are and how hard they're going to discipline the women for daring to want basic human rights certainly did not make me fall into love or root for any of them.

It was hard to keep up the same level of sympathy for the females characters as well since their personalities changed so quickly, they went from revolutionaries to giggling "little girls" who spread for their man and back again sometimes within the same paragraph. The tone changes gave me emotional whiplash and really confused the narrative. The author seems like she's making some kind of statement in the beginning but she is not--unless she decides for a brief moment to go back to making a statement. Overall it is not terribly cohesive.

Everything, apparently, can be forgiven in light of how totally great the men are at sex despite one female character making a point of mentioning that she had a positive, healthy, and happy sexual relationship with a human man which helped her heal from trauma from her sexual relationship with alpha men. So..........................????? What EXACTLY is the big draw of these fucking dudes??? Basically they can sling dick exactly as well as anyone but come with the added bonus of a mandatory lifetime of servitude.

I think the difference for me with these books is that the men genuinely infantilize their women without a real narrative purpose beyond "this is just how it is." The women are also written so wonderfully and full of fire in the beginning of her books that it is extra distressing to see how they lose that to become a shell of a person later on. I am fairly easy-going with questionable themes in romance novels but this was really too much for me. The author clearly tries to portray that there was love and respect between the couples despite the d/s relationship but it came across to me more like one-sided Stockholm syndrome or a romanticization of a lobotomy.

Overall, I would say this is a genuine fetish book. If this is your thing 100%, you will probably love it. If you are a casual and with-many-caveats lover like myself, stay away because it will probably disturb you as it disturbed me.

I wasn't impressed with this book. For one, it was too wordy. Everything seemed overly explained. Secondly, the men's attitude towards the women. Like they were better, were smarter and the women's opinions didn't matter. They also seemed very old worldly and stiff. I enjoyed the first part of the book but once Skylar and the rest of the women were captured, the plot went downhill from there. The characters started to become irritating. I lost interest around 60% and started skimming the pages from there. This story really didn't hold my attention but it may hold someone elses. My best respects to the author.

I DNF this about 20% of the way through. You expect domineering, but what you get is not just a main character who doesn't respect women as a gender, you had a whole damn world who didn't, but tried to make it sound like they did, which is what I can't stand. Plus, the writing just wasn't very good. I knew I was in trouble when "It was said" were the first few words, and I skipped over the prologue in self defense.

Ok I get being into bdsm hell I love fifty shades. But this book makes beating your partner with a belt just for disagreeing with you ok. Makes women having no choice of any kind ok. Makes men abusing women ok. And the. Worst of all makes it seem like the women like being beaten just for for talking back, or rejecting a partner wow. Horrific

A well written and very captivating Shifter romance

I read an excerpt of this on the Stormy Nights Publishing blog and was intrigued enough to borrow the book through kindle unlimited. There are some shifter books I enjoy, others I've forgotten as soon as I close my kindle. This is one of the better ones, in my opinion.

Just like Skylar and her female pack, I found the patriarchal society the live in to be unfair and irritating at times. But that was the point of the story and was discussed quite a few times. The fact that Dylan didn't agree with forcing the women into anything, and was definitely against choosing their mates for them, made him a much more likeable character. He was doing the best he could, for ALL his pack, given the circumstances and culture they lived in.

The only thing that would have made this book better would for us to have experienced a male being disciplined in some way. I read it because I like spanking/discipline books BUT there is a fine line between consensual punishment and punishment because whoever is in charge doesn't agree with your opinion. Several of the more 'progressive' packs allowed females to be honest, as long as they were polite.

At time it felt as though the males were always perfect, and only females ever required disciplining. Especially all those women who were so 'naughty' wanting to live freely in their own pack and under their own rules. The author did a good job of balancing things, showing that Dylan and his allies were battling the more conservative shifters in order to allow the women to choose their future mates. But it still occasionally felt like Hobson's choice, though the decision at the end, regarding Summer, did feel very positive.

Whilst we did get some alpha's kicked out of the house party due to their misogynistic ways, as I've already said I would have liked to see a male shifter receive some sort of punishment for misbehaving in some way. It would have made it clearer that males had to follow rules just the same as females, and also that it isn't only women who step out of line or misbehave. However it was a minor point and really didn't spoil my overall enjoyment of this story.

I actually found this a very gripping read and didn't want to put it down. It's not just Skylar and Dylan's story and I found myself wanting to know more about the many of the other characters in the book. I will definitely read more work by this author.

Writing like this kind of shit makes me think that someone is trying to convince us that abuse towards women is acceptable and enjoyable! Physical abuse towards anyone, any being should not ever be portrayed as an act that is made out of love and it should be acceptable! Not in real life and not f-ing romance fiction!

This gets 2 stars only because I managed to force myself to actually finish this ridiculous book! Otherwise this doesn’t even deserve one star!
What the f...?!

This book doesn’t even have a plot. It basically revolves around two things and two things only: humiliating and painful punishment inflicted to female characters and knoting (which is apparently painful but oh so pleasurable to females)!
I am not exaggerating here, each and every page of this book either talks about spanking and inflicting pain or knoting!
And as one of the reviewer‘s had already said, each chapter is a repeated conversation of the previous one talking again about disciplining females by spanking and knoting!!!
The plot? Just marrying off the females in the book to males who believe it’s their right to own and discipline the inferior females to teach them how to behave.

Honestly this is a really badly written BDSM wannna-be novel.

I have actually downloaded most of the books in the series as I have kindle unlimited. However I am definitely deleting all of them as I cannot tolerate the thought of reading one more word of this author in the series!

This is one of my all time favorite series! I love the storyline! Skyler is a strong, independent she-wolf who is determined to help and protect women from the male dominated wolf society. She was able to do so for many years. Dylan is the alpha of his pack who has been tasked by the council to gather the all female pack and disperse/re-integrate them into the male dominated society.

As this story unfolds we get to see the strength, acceptance, and fierce protective nature that Skyler has! Dylan is the perfect match for her in all ways! I love seeing Dylan's loving, dominating, protective, and empathetic nature reveal itself as the story is being told!

Delta James has hit on an amazing story that keeps you enthralled from beginning to end! The sexy scenes leave you panting and you can't help but fall in love with these characters! 5 stars and a definite must read!!!!!!

Don’t bother

Probably one of the worst werewolf romances I’ve ever read. The whole thing was centered around how woman are happier when men choose for them and if you don’t like what men choose you get spanked. Usually I’m all for a bit of bdsm but this was just nauseating. The use of the term naughty and good girl was infuriating. It also had no plot other than them getting picked by men or hearing the call and then going off with them. There was no build up, no drama, no one got away. It was also poorly written and the writer kept repeating and expanding info she had already explained. It was almost like she didn’t know what to write do she kept rewording stuff to make the book longer. Would NOT recommend and will not be continuing the series it was that bad.

I DNF'd this piece of trash and I have never, ever called a book trash until this one. In the first chapter this book has forced matings, capturing women for men's pleasure, casual beatings of women, male ego stroking, sexual humiliation and treating strong independent women like 5 year old children.
But don't get me wrong, I love BDSM stories, any erotica, the more taboo the better and PNR shifters have my heart but this is just telling a story to stoke a male ego. There was NOTHING, sexy or fun about spanking a woman bare-ass in front of God and country because she was trying to protect a tribe of women from being forcefully enslaved to men who just want to "mate" them for their own good and according to the book - all women need a strong pimp hand across their backside or belt beating to keep them in line or they become too strong willed. OMG are you freaking kidding me!!! How about I beat your grown man ass with a belt? I swear to goodness this has to have been written by a man who just wants to read about women being beaten, enslaved and forced into submission (not in a good or fun, respectful way), all while trying to disguise it under a PNR cloak to make it more palatable.
This book is just a misogynistic fantasy and seriously, severely insulting to any woman. I'm ashamed that this book/series is even in the world. There's fantasy, there's PNR, there's BDSM and I have read some seriously taboo reads but this dribble is a whole other level. I have never, ever been more offended in the first chapters of a book and this is from someone who defaults to horror, taboo and dark erotica in my past time.

A non consensual book about beatings that are good for the poor misguided woman.

It is sad that in these times a story about non consensual sex with non consensual beatings with a hand and belt is considered ok. The women in this story are only "allowed" to state their thoughts and opinions with the mates permission. What she wants is irrelevant. I still have it three stars because it was well written. I will no be buying again from this repressed author. My biggest piece with this is it is only consensual because the man says it is, not because the woman gave consent.

Just a shifter spanking book

Hero: Weak, that’s the best I got. I can see where they tried to make him seem like the biggest badest Alpha ever but really what I read was someone who changed his mind constantly and would threaten a harder spanking but didn’t do it.

Heroine: Fake. Shes supposed to be this big bad Alpha woman shifter but within 24 hours shes marked and all doe eyes with the hero? She was started off good but seemed like the author just wanted a quick to the romance and spankings than to do an actual lead up.

Best part of the book: The first part of the book was great. You could see the build up the chase the fire and the stubbornness.

Worst part of the book: How quickly the first part of the book ended and no more build up. Like every other chapter someone else was falling in love and declaring mates. I would personally prefer a book that was centered on the relationship of the main couple than 8 couples in 1 book. The book was spankings with some story not a story with spankings. When you go straight porn and toss in a few sentences of a story line that’s not a book but just a porn book.

Knotting 101

This wasn't a bad novel, per se, but it could have benefited from significant editing.
The novel became redundant because of the many treatises on knotting and marking. While these are common shifter themes and are often described in some length, in this novel it was a bit of an overkill. First, there was an overly lengthy narrative in the beginning that could have been better interspersed with dialogue. Second, either the narrative or the dialogue could have adequately dealt with the mating ritual explanations. At some point a reader just wants to roll her eyes after the 15th knotting discussion.
Also, the author really needed to consider the character development of the females. These bloodthirsty females who decimated an entire male pack bow to submission because of a few swats and having to stand in a corner? That was pretty hard to swallow. It would have made more sense if their skill was in being crafty, avoiding detection, and employing strategies to avoid capture. That could be consistent with eventual capitulation. But the rapid transformation merely in response to a few spanks was just too pat to be believed.
Not awful, but I wouldn't recommend as a first shifter novel.

This is another book I would recommend you read and judge for yourself. I am once again conflicted. I liked the storyline of an all female pack. I didn't mind the idea of them joining a layer lack for safety. I didn't like the way they were forced to join. I also didn't like what Sky did with the island the women lived in and how they were made to leave.

I liked that Dylan afforded the other women three option to choose their mates. The process with the knot...no, just no. I liked most of the characters in the pack.

I think I have to remember that although they take human form, they are wolf shifters and as such, there is a hierarchy that requires dominance and submission. The whole animal kingdom thing. I was ok with Sky accepting Dylan and her new position until I discovered she came AFTER his Beta and Omega.

As you can see, there are things that I liked and didn't like. Maybe I'm over analyzing things. Overall, I found it to be interesting. I would give the book 3.5 stars.

Enjoyed it, didn't love it.

I'm a huge fan of shifter romance especially Wolves so this sounded like something I needed to read.

I love a strong Alpha Wolf but this book had so many i found myself a bit confused at times. I prefer books in a series to focus on one Alpha of a pack per story as well as focus on each couple separately, my head was spinning a little at times with the sheer amount of claimings happening.

If you're a fan of lots of Spankings this is the book for you. I do usually find them Hot AF but I felt there were just to many they spoilt the story a bit for me. The constant need to discipline went from sexy to repetitive.

I did really like Skylar and Dylan they had strong chemistry. Skylar was feisty and strong and more than a match for her Alpha, she kept him on his toes that's for sure.

Even though I didn't love this book as much as I wanted to I think the series has real potential so I'm definitely going to continue.

Apparently independent females are a threat to shifter society.

I should point out that I generally like D/S and spanking stories, but I just could not accept the premise of this book. The essential message was that females had to be mated and submissive to men because it was right and appropriate. I don't even mind dubcon when it is acknowledged, even tacitly, that it is wrong. The approach in this story just didn't work for me.

The story itself was very well written and there multiple steamy sex scenes, so if the premise doesn't bother you, then you will probably enjoy this one.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for review purposes.

THE ONLY CHOICE ANY OF US HAVE IS WHETHER OR NOT TO BE HAPPY

Wow! What a page-turner of a story with fascinating characters, plenty of angst, attitude, and decisions to be made. I found this story very different from most shifter stories, and that is awesome. A group of females that aren’t hurting anyone minding their own business, refusing to accept the rule of men, and having their own pecking order with the Alpha, Beta, and Omega in their group. But a group of stodgy old men known as the Council decided that this isn’t the way for things to be and are determined to capture and mate these females.

Alpha female, Skylar Owen, lost her mate, avenged his death, left her homeland and came to America. She bought a rundown estate on an island, and along with a group of rag-tag female wolf shifters, they restored the home and had lived there happily. They have already been attacked once, and know that trouble is on the way once word gets out about a group of lone female wolf shifters. The way of Bae Diogel or Safe Harbor is changing quickly.

Dylan Grainger, alpha of Colan Gwyllt, along with a few other packs are against the way the Ruling Council plans to handle the Bae Diogel, and makes plans of his own, along with a few other packs on how to safely ensure the eight women have a safe refuge and are allowed to choose a mate.

The plot will have a little history on Skylar and her former Alpha mate, Micah, of the Calon Onest pack. After avenging his death, she will come to America and offer a safe haven to females, some refusing the old ways, others escaping abuse. They aren’t hurting anyone, but their world is about to change, and they are forced to accept this change.

“Let me speak for everyone when I say; you’ve done more for each of us individually and collectively than any other being—human or shifter. You gave us, and so many others, this place and your strength to build new lives. I will cherish our friendship for the rest of my days.” –Roz to Skylar

Dylan sees Skylar on the beach and knows she is his life mate, and he will claim her. It isn’t an easy acquiescence for her, one she fights against, but eventually accepts. The chemistry between
Dylan and Skylar sizzles on the pages whether it is from pain, passion, or pleasure. Both, being alphas, has two very strong individuals wanting control, but she must cede that control to his authority. It will be her job to help assure the other women that they are safe and have choices in a mate, but they will be mated.

“You are mine, and I am yours. There is freedom to be found within the pack structure. That night you said goodbye to him, I heard your heart and soul call me mine. You are mine, cariad—now and forever.”

Several of the females will also find their life-mate and accept the marking willingly, a few will fight against it at first, but submit, and then one will fight it all the way. What was to be one female per pack will not necessarily work that way, causing issues with several of the other packs, especially when some of the matings aren’t alphas. But Dylan accepts the call of life-mate pairings.

“You destroyed her pack and her way of life because you were forced to. But then you showed her how to live and love again.”

The story doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but does end in a way to make the reader believe there will be more stories to follow. Trouble may be coming, wars within various packs. The story has very explicit sex scenes, male dominance, female submission, spankings, control, dubious consent, and mating by shifters.

'Brought to Heel' is the first book in Delta James' "Wayward Mates" series and I have to admit, I'm reading these out of order. You see, I discovered Ms. James' writings and then found myself at the tail-end of the series. Now, I'm back-tracking after all this time in order to catch up on all the delicious details in this series that I've previously missed. That describes this book to a T, DELICIOUS DETAILS. Skylar Owen was previously married to Micah, her Alpha when he was murdered. It destroyed her world, left a hole in her heart, and she grieved … until she got mad. She tracked every man who had worked together to murder her mate and destroyed them, eye for an eye but she left the pack. She didn't the repercussions she knew would be coming to affect her pack and set up her own refuge. That brought in more women who had either been abused by their mate or wanted to be free of a male patriarchal society. When the Ruling Council had received numerous complaints about a female-only pack, they set about banning them wanting to put the women's name into a lottery to dole out like prizes. Dylan Grainger had other ideas. He, along with a few other packs, admired the women's tenacity, cunning, and loyalty and thought if they couldn't be left alone then they should be given the opportunity to select their own mates and he intended to see that happen before the Ruling Council decided to step in. This was a wonderful introduction to all the main players I have been reading about in the newer stories and gave me so much background I wasn't aware of. The chemistry between Skylar and Dylan, Darcy and Jean-Michele, and many others who found their fated mate during this story was sizzling. The adventure, drama, fear, excitement, intellect, and insecurities brought me so close to these characters they felt as if I knew them personally. I want more and I can't believe I've waited this long to start on what I missed.

Conflicted At First

An all female wolf shifter pack is deemed unsuitable by the Council that governs the shifter packs of North America. It is decided that they must be disbanded and though Dylan, the alpha of the closest pack, is not all the way on board he decides he's the best man for the job of bringing these ladies in.

I read the novella, Claiming His Mate, that comes before this book. At first I was conflicted with all the discipline that was handed out. It made me uncomfortable to read that the lady shifters put up such a fight and then seemed forced to comply after receiving spankings.

I stuck with the series and began this book. With many more pairings I was able to see that even though the women initially put up a fight or were totally against being mated there was something else at work here, let's call it biology or even wolf shifter nature.

Each pairing was called to each other. Being that this book is a dom/sub book I expected some type of punishment. It just took for me to understand that this discipline was handed out in love and it was often explained before, during, and after.

Getting past my reservations, I was able to get into the story and actually enjoy it. That knot and tied process had me a little envious. When done right the amount of intimacy and the connecting formed is beautiful.

One of my favorite parts is when the New Orleans alpha Jean-Michel offers to kill his life mates abusive ex-mate and serve his head to her. I also love the way Dylan and Skylar handled the abusive alpha when he deigned to show up and try to reclaim his mate.

All around a good read and I'm excited to read the next story in the series.

For those who have an issue with this series I think the forget what a dom/sub relationship looks like.

Good and yet not..

First, if you enjoy a lot of very surface DD/lg interactions, you will probably like this book a lot. I did not, for the most part. There were definitely some good places, and I really liked the idea of the story. I just don't think it was done as well as it could have been. There are a lot of grammatical mistakes, poor word choices, and even some mixing up of character names.

For me, it was missing a lot of the sensuality that I expect behind the relationships. It reminded me of something that would have been written more in the 70s or 80s.

There was a lot of difficulty understanding when and where this story is taking place. It quite often felt like a regency romance, with a little bit of current times things mixed in. It was like the Duke and all his people from the regency romance got misplaced in the wrong era.

I think the best part of the book was after the book was over, at the start of the second book. I may go ahead and read that one if it continues along the same vein as the beginning, I will probably enjoy that one a lot more than I enjoyed this one. Which is a shame because I really did like the idea of the story and there were a lot of things to enjoy about the various characters.

One star is too much for this book.
Not only was there violent misogyny, the female shifters were infantilised, the BDSM was entirely non-consensual (at from all that I could read before I gave up) meaning the spanking was sexual assault. There are too many issues with this book for me to recall , even though I have only read 1/8 of the pages, at most.
Now for my problems with the writing. It is very reminiscent of Wattpad werewolf stories that are just justified abuse. The first page was a deep dive into the history of the werewolves, instead of, I don't know, an introduction to the characters. Maybe I would have been able to root for the romance if even a sentence had mentioned the MC's desire for a romantic relationship, or even just a sexual one. At the best of times, the writing was stilted and confusing with the point of view changing every paragraph and at worst of times was just a list of events or pieces of information that were needed to move the story along.
Overall, I wish everybody who rated this book 5 stars a trip to therapy because none of this book was consensual and if you enjoyed all the assault you need help.

I'm going to start this one off by saying that it is a little dark and has elements of D/s. It neither of those things are your cup of tea then please keep scrolling. However, if you like your men a little more Alpha then Alpha, and you like your women strong, but also being "put in their place" then one click this one right now. There isn't any abuse, or even strong discipline, but the women aren't treated as equals and they are punished for not following the orders given by the men.

Now that I've got that out of the way I will tell you about how much I loved this one. A lot! It was very easy to connect with Skylar and Dylan. I loved the chemistry they had, and the sexy scenes were HOT. The story line was also enjoyable and had everything from danger and suspense to moments of tenderness and even some humor. I haven't had the pleasure of reading anything by Delta James before, but I am sure a fan now. I can't wait to dive into more of her work.

I found myself pretty frustrated reading this even though I enjoyed it. Many of the reviews state problems with what they called a lack of respect for the women and the sexist attitude of the story. That wasn't my problem. I have always been a pretty laid back reader who is able to accept the rules and customs of the world in which I am reading about. They are shifters, not humans. Their beliefs and their reality is different and that is fine with me. My main issue was how repetitive it was. The same things are said over and over again by different people and sometimes even the same person. That gets boring really fast. I also thought that the story was quite busy. I wish more time had been focused on Dylan and Skylar, rather than all the glimpses of the other girls and stuff. The other stories are about them so I didn't need them taking up so much space in this one.

I plan to read the next one to see if things start to flow a little better as the series progresses.

A really good story with strong characters. Skylar was alpha of a all female pack of wolf shifters. The counsil made up of male shifters decided that the female pack needed to be devided up among the other packs as unmated females were a commodity. Dylan, alpha of Calon Gwyllt, felt that Skylar's pack should have a chance to choose their mates so he captures the female pack and keeps them safe under the care of his pack until arrangements can be made for the women. Dylan invites the alphas from several of the other packs, only those that he knows will treat their mates with respect. Dylan knows that Skylar is his soul mate and that's where the fun begins.
There is spanking and power exchange in this story between the very fiesty females and the dominate males they end up with. This story will keep your interest from beginning to end.
