Trying New Hats tells the story of Thirty-Five-year-old Poppy Parker and her family which consists of, two sisters who are both married. Her mum, dad, and fiancé, Daniel. Poppy always does the right thing and is extremely loyal. She is very career orientated, so is her partner. For this reason, Poppy believes they are well suited to one another.

When a promotion comes up for grabs at her workplace, Belle Cosmetics, Poppy thinks that she is the one to get it. Unfortunately, the job is given to someone else. Angry at being sidelined and then discovering that Daniel has been given a promotion at his company and must travel to Hong Kong for six months, Poppy takes some time out and travels to Paris, France where she discovers an aunt she never knew about, Selma.

The story ticked along at a nice pace and was certainly an easy read. I found myself laughing at some of the things Poppy’s boyfriend did and said. His character felt very realistic and I could picture him perfectly in my head. Along with Poppy, who I feel was searching for herself.

Aunt Selma was another fascinating character and she really brought the book to life and gave me a good giggle at times.

I would award this book three-and-a-half-star because although it was an easy read and dealt with family relationships in a light accessible way, I wanted the plot to be a bit more unique and different.

This is a new author to me but reading a blog about her books had me wanting to read some myself and this beautiful book didn’t disappoint.

I found the book a little slow burning to begin with but I was soon engrossed in Poppy’s adventures and was page turning to read some more.

This book follows Poppy Parker on her journey from Boston to France, finding her feet and rediscovering herself after uncovering things which are set to change her carefully planned future.

The book holds a few twists I didn’t see coming and the title sums up many woman’s lives. We become familiar with our everyday hats dutiful wife, mother, sister, employee and friend and it’s usually only when something unexpected happens in our lives that we have the courage to try on a different hat.

I throughly recommend this beautiful book. 4.5 stars for me purely because I took a while to get into the story. I received a review copy but will definitely read more by Sophia Ellis a great new name in writing for me.

I had never heard of this author until I saw a comment in one of the Face Book pages that I follow asking for people that were willing to read and review some of her books. Having said that you never know exactly what to expect from a new author, but I found the book Trying New Hats by Sofia Ellis to be a very good read. I enjoyed getting to know Poppy and following along with her on her journey to discover her path in life. When things don't turn out as expected, she decides to make some moves that are out of character for her, yet they lead her to truly discovering her place in the world that surrounds her. I certainly would recommend it to anyone, looking for a great read. Simple and sweet, with plenty of twists and turns tossed into the mix to keep the story interesting.

Trying New Hats by Sofia Ellis is an intriguing story that takes us from Boston to France, in search of answers along with Poppy Parker. I was interested in the book from the beginning, and had a feeling I knew what was about to happen with Poppy’s upcoming nuptials. It was exciting to see workaholic and scheduler Poppy do something spontaneous, and I was rooting for her when she booked her flights to France. When she lands, the book really picks up speed from there. It was great fun as a reader to see everything unfold, and I was hoping for a sweet happily ever after for Poppy. Trying New Hats is a sweet read to add to your summer reading list.
