What happened here?

I just read this very engaging book about a couple whose marriage is falling apart due to bad choices, infertility and secrets. I see the h making ridiculously bad choices, keeping secrets and lying to her husband and I understood it because we were aware of her thoughts. But him? What was going on with him?? I am not talking about his reaction to the 'dance' between Mason and his wife, but before that? Was he having an affair? Why did he start calling her Mackenzie instead of Mack?? Why was he pulling away? I don't get it. Not at all and it is never cleared up except for I just started acting like that and I let it go to far?? Not satisfactory to me. I needed to know what was going on with him but unfortunately he just changes back and we never know. That was off. I would have point black asked him before he got back in my bed. Oh well. Mason was off. I don't know what his major malfunction was but he was so out of line. And I loved Josie and she honestly was one of the best friends I have read about. She didn't take sides. Great story, emotional cheating on h's part and the OM did kiss her at the end but she pushed him away. Thank heavens she came to her senses. He was a little creepy to me. I still would like to know what the husband was thinking but unfortunately we won't ever know.. I loved the epilogue and this was a very powerful story even though the heroine annoyed me at times. The H was just baffling. I did like the authors writing style though and I will definitely read her again.

After reading this book I have one question. Why was Bryson so distant from Mackenzie? That question was left unanswered. Whatever explanation he gave in the end was so lame that Bryson seems like a douche to me.
It felt like he only started being nice to her because she got pregnant. I know it’s not like that but it felt so. What if she was not pregnant? Would he have continued to be distant to her?
Mason, on the other hand, was nice though a little too pushy. He did tried to add petrol in the already lit fire, that is, the rocky marriage. But Mac also flirted with him. And in the end when everything looks good , she just flushes him out.
Everyone was to be blamed in this. Mac went a little too far by spending time with Mason. And Bryson was pure dumb

Heartbreakingly realistic, Trying follows our narrator, Mackenzie, as she and her husband navigate difficulties getting/staying pregnant and keeping their marriage alive. Trigger warning for those with sensitivity to potential infertility and miscarriage. My multiple miscarriages were 20 plus years ago but it’s something women never get over, and this was very emotional. Trying also is a good reminder fathers feel loss just as deeply, but often get forgotten in the pain. There was emotional cheating in my opinion and Mack was naive to not realize it until it’s too late. But we never really know 100% what the husband got himself up to working late so much, but typically that screams affair in these books. Just use your imagination for him since she’s our only narrator. I like authors writing style and will definitely keep on my radar.

Based on a FB post, I went into this thinking it might be a rage read. I was expecting to hate the “cheating” husband, what I wasn’t expecting was an emotionally cheating wife.

They’re a married couple who have dealt with infertility and given up trying. They’ve drifted apart and she’s feeling it, he’s buried himself in work. Is he cheating? Who knows? It’s ambiguous at best. But, she’s definitely way to connected to a co-worker who is obviously in love with her—honestly, she’s stringing him along, she’s not remotely in love, but she likes the attention.

3 I wasn’t expecting a cheating wife stars.

This was a really emotional story. The couple goes through several miscarriages, and it deeply affects their relationship. The husband, who’s an accountant, gets a promotion and starts throwing himself into work, creating distance between them. He never cheats, and neither does she, but she starts enjoying the attention of a colleague, feeling confused and hurt by her husband’s withdrawal.

Eventually, she finds out she’s pregnant, but things between them are so strained they almost break up. A car accident brings everything to a head. He redeems himself by opening up, explaining that he thought focusing on work and giving her space would help her heal from the miscarriages.

Overall, it was a touching story. I just wish there had been a little more depth in some parts. One thing that felt unresolved was the strange closeness between her husband and her best friend — it was hinted at but never really explained. Still, the main story was wrapped up nicely, and they got their happy ending with their baby.

Heather Mackinnon really did a great job writing this romance novel, I was grabbed into this book from page 1. I'm not really a Romance genre kind of girl but this book made me want to try out this genre some more. I could not put this book down, I read through it so fast I didn't even notice I read up to chapter 16 on the first day. Trying was written in the present and past. Heather did a good job of avoiding making this book into a cliche.

The heroine drove me crazy in this story, she was not very likable. I also didn't care for all the flashbacks chapters, it took me out of the story.

The story ended with too many unanswered questions, I wouldn't recommend this one.

The book was just okay. I think there should have been a lot more time spent on them discussing why things went downhill in their marriage. I felt like the ending was too quick and I’d have liked to have read more about them fixing their relationship. So what? She’s pregnant and now after years of a shitty marriage everything is worth fighting for and fixing?

I understood why the husband withdrew from her but I don’t understand why he continued to ignore her after she decided to give up on getting pregnant. There really wasn’t any reason for him to continue pushing her away and treating her like that when she was making an effort. It’s not like she didn’t have a legitimate reason for being upset.

I’m also a little confused by the timeline. They tried getting pregnant pretty soon into their marriage and the books present is close to 10 years into their marriage. She was acting like a bitch to him after the first month of failing to get pregnant. It took I think 2 -3 years until she finally gave up. You’re telling me they spent 9-10 years not having a proper relationship or speaking to each other then?

Didn’t make sense

I think this was such a great read. The angst and emotions were all there. I feel the author had a smooth writing style and I loved the line being danced with between cheating and not cheating. Some readers might consider the relationship Mackenzie and Mason had was emotional cheating but when she could have cheated she didn't and she kept trying to keep the lines clear between them. We don't find out why Bryce was the way he was and I think that was the only negative about this book. But if you like the marriage in crisis trope, this is a great one to read. Please read the TW as miscarriage is a huge part of plot.

I'm a Heather MacKinnon virgin. Gasp. I know. But I think that fact going into Trying made reading it even more exhilarating. I didn't know if there were going to be darker elements like a shot of expresso, or if it was going to be super light and fluffy like Whipped Cream. I'd like to think this book was very much a Mud Slide. You know, that sexy alcoholic drink - goes down fast and is absolutely delicious.

Story Line: Mackenzie has been with her husband for close to a decade. But everything isn't happy go lucky. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Her husband, Bryson, works all the time. Like, ALL THE TIME. And not "working" but actually working. Time, distance and infertility has built a brick wall between these two. It's heartbreaking. And then there's that coworker. The guy who gives her all the attention and sweetness that she so desperately wants at home. Now before you start going there, if cheating is hard limit for you, you can keep reading this review. That's the only hint I will give you.

Interaction: God. My heart goes out to this couple. Mac so desperately wants to feel her husband's love and admiration. But for the first half of this book, it's the cold shoulder from Bryson. So of course, she starts to feel things for that other guy. And those little feelings are absolutely returned. So Mac has to make a decision. Does she try to make her marriage work? Or does she take the easy way out an straight into her coworkers arms? I will say this. This book does have a HEA. But it's a rough ride for Mac and Bryson to get there. It takes extreme events to finally turn things around. Events that caused me to cry and truly weep for their love.

Laundry: I don't think I've ever read a book where I was afraid to read a laundry scene. But I was so dang fearful I was going to read a scene where she cheated and that thought alone broke my heart. Bryson and Mac prove through flashbacks, memories and her office Christmas party that they have chemistry that is smoking hot. The laundry in Trying is so hot but it's not every single page. I will NEVER complain about small amounts of laundry. But I also understand some readers really want the good stuff and often. In this book the laundry is slightly less, the quality is second to none. So rest assured.

Depth: There's something about the stress of bringing a child into the world that can truly bring out the worst in people. Mac and Bryson are no exception. And neither were my husband and I. Thanksgiving 2016 we were flying high. We were pregnant with our second child and planned to keep things hush hush until the second trimester. The following Tuesday our world came crashing down. We were losing the baby. For 11 torturous days, I bled. And for another month after that, we spun down a steep slope to depression. Our marriage fell apart so fast. It took us nearly 40 days to realize what was happening and then, there was the repair, Even today we are still working to repair the damage those 40 days caused. What helped beyond measure? Our baby boy was born at the end of August 2017. So, as you will see after you finish the book, Mac and I have quite a bit in common.

This book was a very emotional ride for me. It's been quite a while since I've stayed up late reading because I couldn't make my eyes stop reading. I loved this book so much and I know you will too!

This book dealt with the very heartbreaking subject of infertility, which lead to a major disconnect between the main characters, Bryson and Mackenzie. The problem I had with this story, is that we were never told why Bryson checked out of his marriage all those months ago. It just seemed rather convenient that he was only 'trying' after he found out Mackenzie was pregnant. Also, the heroine was rather shrewish in the flashback chapters. Her somewhat inappropriate relationship with Mason was also very questionable. Overall, this book lacked depth.

Having personally experienced infertility, I was interested in reading this just to see how infertility was represented. It was done as good as I’ve seen, but I just wish authors would be more realistic and not have to always make all the drama go away once the woman gets pregnant in stories like these. The authors note was a nice touch, but she failed to mention that sometimes couples never end up getting pregnant or having the baby they’ve tried many years for. The Mason character in this book just seemed so unrealistic as well. He was creepy and just seemed desperate. I also wish the author would’ve explained more about Bryson’s absence and detachment from the marriage.

Overall this was okay. I skimmed through the technical fertility chapters because it was stuff I already knew and didn’t care to read about. It did seem a bit clinical and not sure how the average reader would appreciate those chapters. Reading this just solidified that I probably shouldn’t read anymore books with infertility as the the storyline.

This is the first time I have read any of this authors’ work, and my goodness, I will certainly be looking out for her work in the future. Mackenzie and Bryson are married, and over time infertility has caused problems in their marriage, and there is a gulf between them which is increasing over time. When a co-worker pays attention to Mac, and giving her the attention she so desperately needs, will she give up on her marriage? No spoilers; this is a must read, you will not be disappointed! This is a well written story, which is an emotional and heartbreaking rollercoaster journey. I was totally hooked and intrigued throughout, and cannot wait to read more of this authors’ work.

The story had a lot of potential but at some point the author decided to create drama instead of deepening the problems that Mack created and that Bryson ignored and that led to those dark moments of marriage. Unfortunately, in the outcome, no truthful solution was created, creating a false sense of happiness.
For me, it was all her fault and he allowed her to grow because it was easier to ignore than to face.

This is the first time I have read any of this author’s books, and I absolutely loved it! After Bryson and Mackenzie have been together for years and once married they decided they wanted kids right away. They figured it would be simple – do the baby dance often and in no time, Kenzie would be pregnant. Except it wasn’t simple for them. Months went by and now 2 years later, still unable to conceive, Kenzie and Bryson have become strangers living together. Bryson has become someone she doesn’t recognize. Gone is the attentive, passionate, loving husband who couldn’t keep his hands off her as soon as she came in the room. Gone is her best friend. He’s been replaced by someone who is emotionless, uncaring, and dismissive. He is always working, either at the office or in his home office. They don’t talk, touch each other or go out anymore. She feels so alone, that she is the only one in this marriage.

The only person that makes her feel wanted and appreciated is her co-worker, Mason. He sees her despair and does whatever he can to see a smile on her face – taking her out to lunch or bringing her coffee in the morning. Despite her pain and anguish from her failing marriage, she can’t help but feel alive and wanted from the small interactions with Mason. He’s slowly becoming someone who she looks forward talking and texting with. Her best friend and co-worker Josephine warns her that she’s treading on dangerous territory, but at this point Kenzie knows Bryson no longer cares for her and she’s starting to see that maybe there is no way to save her marriage. With Kenzie finally giving up on Bryson, it is now up to him to open his eyes and see that he is about to lose the woman he promised forever to.

The feelings and emotions Kenzie went through were heartbreaking. It is realistic, and most couples struggling with infertility in real life can relate. The only thing I wish for is some POV on Bryson’s side. Regardless this was a great book, one that I highly recommend. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s work.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy.

Wow!!! A definite must read! I had so many emotions with the book....happy, ticked off, ecstatic, sad, heartwarming...etc. This book hit so close to home; it was like she wrote my story. There are numerous parallels between this book and my life. I have to tell Heather thanks for the patience with me...I honestly am grateful for your generosity!

So this book does not disappoint in any way. Mackenzie and Bryson are a young married couple that are smitten with love. Through some trials and heartache of infertility, Mackenzie pushes Bryson away, and he then continues to drift away from her. A snake in the grass...Mason....just so happens to weasel his way into Mackenzie's life. Of course, he does and says the right things. He borders obsession and stalking with Mackenzie. Mackenzie is oblivious to Mason. However, we all can see where it is heading. Thank goodness for Josie who has Mackenize's back. Josie is a true friend and sees 's Mason for who he is....scum. Mason is a man who tries to convince Mackenzie that Bryson is not the one for her, but he is. We all know those guys...huh?! As the story continues, it takes a turn that I was not expecting. I won't spoil the ending.....I have to say....READ THIS BOOK!!!

Thank you, Heather, for how you ended the book. I am happy that the book turned out the way it did! This book could have gone the usual way.....but it makes my heart happy that it turned the corner. This is my first book by Heather, and it definitely did not disappoint! Also, it will not be my last!

This book revolves around the marriage of Mackenzie and Bryson who have been trying unsuccessfully to have a baby. Mackenzie desperately wants to become a mother. After trying for two years to have a baby, the stress is taking its toll on their marriage. Bryson works late every night and often all weekend. Mackenzie sits home alone, feeling sorry for herself. She thinks that Bryson no longer loves her.

Bryson loves Mackenzie, but the mood swings caused by the fertility treatments make it hard for him to spend time with her. While I empathized with Mackenzie, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Bryson. About halfway through the book I was beginning to understand why Bryson spent so much time away from home. Mackenzie thinks that Bryson no longer loves her because she can’t get pregnant. Every negative pregnancy test just makes her sink deeper into depression. Having a baby becomes an obsession for Mackenzie.

Mackenzie’s coworker, Mason, has fallen in love with her. He takes her to lunch and brings her her favorite coffee every morning. He is giving her the attention that Bryson doesn’t seem to be able to give her. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Mason. He seemed like such a nice guy. He tried so hard to please Mackenzie. While Mackenzie loved the attention she was getting from Mason, she still wanted to try to save her marriage.

This is the first book by this author that I have read, but it won’t be the last. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes good women’s fiction.

Firstly, I’m seeing a lot of people confused about why Bryson started drifting away from Mack. It’s because she’s a bitch lol. Or at least, she’d turned into one during their fertility journey. This seemed pretty obvious - even her best friend told Mack she used to treat Bryson pretty horribly. Mack also admitted she played a role in pushing him away when they were trying to get pregnant. There is no plot hole here.

Which brings me to the second thing - again, Mack’s a bitch lol. She knew what she was doing with Mason and every time he would start professing his feelings, she’d act shocked and confused. Girl this is the third time he’s told you in no uncertain terms that he has feelings for you, and every single time you say “where is this coming from?!”.

I went into this thinking I’d hate the MMC but it was actually the FMC who was more infuriating imo. She was immature and seemed to be the catalyst for a lot of her strife in her world - namely because she’s an avoidant that doesn’t speak directly or she just runs away. Eg when OM guesses that she’s pregnant, he asks if her husband knows and she “freezes”. Doesn’t answer him, runs away. Naturally, OM turns up at their house and spills the beans. Drama ensues.

And no, I don’t believe MMC cheated. It genuinely seemed like he was constantly avoiding her because of her anger, and he’d done it for so long it sort of became a habit that didn’t change even when she came off all the hormone treatments. Ironically, the only cheating that happens is FMC who effectively has an emotional affair with a co worked (OM).

Trying is a great romance book. Keep me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't wat to see what happens next. Makenzie and Bryson was trying to get pregnant and was not having any luck so they quit trying. At Makenzies office party her and Bryson had a fight. Bryson was mad because Makenzie was dancing with Mason one of her co-workers
Bryson got very mad and told Makenzie that they were leaving when they go home they had sex. Two months later Makenzie had sighns oh pregnancy so when she got home from work she took a pregnancy test. When she found out she was pregnant she called Bryson and he answered his phone, Makenzie asked Bryson to be home from work at seven sheaf his favorite meal. Bryson didn't come home at seven so Makenzie called Bryson cell phone several time he didn't answer, so she called his office. Come to find out that he had a meeting with a woman so he said. Makenzie ate dinner at nine. Then she went to Josie's house and stayed for a while. Three weeks had passed and Makenzie still has not went home or told Bryson she was pregnant. One day at work Mason gave Makenzie a genger ale and Makenzie cryied and Mason figured out she was pregnant. This is a great romance book I highley recommend this book.

This is the first book that I have read by this author. Her writing is in a past/present form which I have found from other authors some what confusing. I found in "Trying" that the past/present flowed, was very easy to read, and was used very well for this book. Bryson and Mackenzie are a couple who have lost track of each other in their marriage because of infertility issues. Each of them have drawn back into their own corners in their feelings and actions towards each other. Bryson resorts to working longer hours in the day and more days in the week. Mackenzie attributes this to thinking Bryson is having an affair. Mason, a co-worker of Mackenzie's, starts showing an interest in her, more than her husband. This in turn makes her feel good and wanted even though she knows that it is wrong. Can their marriage be saved when words are spoken that are not meant, an accident that could have been life threatening, and an unexpected long awaited pregnancy happens? Loved the flow of this book. I will be reading more of Heather Mackinnon's books! A must read❤

Wow. Just wow. This was NOT what I expected when reading the synopsis and I’m glad. Most marriage in trouble books I’ve read always end with cheating, but Heather did an outstanding job by not playing into that overdone storyline. Instead she chose a different route and it was the one I was rooting for.

Mackenzie’s marriage is in a terrible rut. Her husband is distance and a coworker decided to take advantage of this. I started to worry that she would indeed sway from her marriage but thanks to Heather’s back-flashes I was in love with her husband, Bryson. I immediately didn’t like Mason, the coworker. He had no respect for Mackenzie’s marriage. He makes it clear around every turn. Any who, after some expected news Bryson and Mackenzie start to find their way back to each other.

This was a perfect standalone. It had a good story, good characters with their own personalities. I didn’t find it dragging in the slightest. In fact, I read it all in one sitting.

This book hit me on a very personal level. Mackenzie and Byron have been together for years. Marriage is hard. You have to grown with your partner. Having grown apart in their marriage is hard to handle. Having grown apart is hard to handle. On top of that when you throw in having a baby wow that is like a detonator. Mac takes it personally and feels like its all on her while Bryson retreats. Women need to feel close to someone and men they tend to need to feel needed. Having friends helps a lot. Sometimes those situations are misinterpreted. This story feels so raw and healing at the same time. I felt for Mac on so many levels. Feeling alone, confused and hurt. Not knowing about Bryson hurt to the core. I loved the book. If only these things could happen for everyone. The end was a little rushed. I do wish i could have had more of the ending but it is definitely something you can relate to. Enjoy!!

Wow! I'm a newbie to Heathers work and from What I've heard she doesn't normally write this genre...all I can say to that is WHY THE HECK NOT!!!! From the very first few chapters I managed to get invested in the Lead Mackenzie... she us the typical young housewife trying to keep her life and marriage together while her world is falling apart!

The thing that got me the most about this story and the characters were the way that they were all so relatable. Every single person has been or knows someone who is in this situation and the way that the characters insecurities, quirks, loves, lives played out through this read was absolutely perfect.

Excellent writing, fantastic story and a couple of unexpected surprises made for a brilliant read. Highly recommend and will most certainly become a firm fan of Heathers going forward!

Grabs You By The Heart and Doesn't Let Go Until The End

Mack and Bryson are a wonderful couple who struggle with infertility. Somehow they have found themselves in a place they never thought they would be to one another, strangers who just live together. What happens when someone else wants to take Bryson's place in his life?

I am not sure if I have the right words to describe this book in the way it deserves. When I say this book was heart wrenching, but so very good, I mean that. It will show you the heartbreak of what inferitility can do to a woman, to a man and to a marriage. How easy it is for lines to become blurred between friendship into an emotional affair. Heather Mackinnon captured all this so eloquently. For the ending you will have to read the book and trust me you will not be disappointed. I cried so many times reading this book!

I'm not married and I've never wanted to have children, so picking this book up was probably not a good decision for me. Regardless, it sounded good as it deals with a couple going through a lot while tackling issues of infertility.

However, I added it to my DNF list about halfway through.

Mackenzie, the FMC, is an absolute nightmare. She is immature, selfish, jealous and has too much time on her hands to assume her husband is possibly cheating on her. However, she does not once hold herself accountable for flirting with a colleague that is into her and lapping up his attention as much as she can. She's honestly a bitch.

I assume something is off with the husband, but I didn't stick around to find out.

First time I've read this author, and this book just didn't do it for me at all.

We meet Bryson and Mack (Mackenzie) whose marriage after trying and failing to conceive is starting to break down. Mack is desperate to save her marriage top but Bryson seems to have forgotten that she even exists as he spends more and more time at the office, to which Mack believes he is having an affair.
When her work colleague Mason feels her that he has feelings for her although flattered, Macktells him that she only wants to be friends.
An unexpected pregnancy happens along with a car accident, will Macks baby survive as well as her marriage.......
This is the first book that I have read from Heather Mackinnon and it definitely won’t be my last, I love her style of writing. this book is a great read it is emotional which will see many readers connecting with the story.

so the book wasn't bad but it sounded too much like another book that I read at first. if she talked about her past first then the present I think I would've felt more but with the back and forth it really made me disconnected. and usually that's not usually the case. anyway when I was about maybe halfway through that when things changed for me. I really got invested and didn't want to put the book down. and I have to give credit where credit is due. Heather you did a good job. Yes my prediction came out right but the way you wrote it and the turmoil Mackenzie went through really happens in life. Infertility can really hurt any relationship around someone if you let it. But all in all good book.
