Soon to be a major motion picture! How far would you go to chase your dreams? This is the story of a Ryerson Journalism student who rode 10,000 miles from Canada through the Americas to his home in Brazil. Two years. Three magnificent horses. Ten countries. A thousand stories of drug cartels, mass migration, the glorious wilderness, the old cowboy ways, the kindness of strangers and the powerful connection between man and beast. This is a tale of grit and inspiration, of Filipe and Frenchie, Bruiser and Dude chasing a dream, one hoof at a time.
First off, I have to say is have you ever seen anything sexier than the back end of a horse as it’s walking away from you? There is a sashay, that amble that they have. Filipe just pulled into my city of Calgary, completing his third long ride so I know there will be a third book coming out. This book chronicles his first ride, which was probably the most diverse of his journeys. If you have any cowboy blood that runs through your veins, this book is for you. If you have a passion for horses, this book is for you.
A stunning true life adventure. And to think you get no saddle sores riding along with the author and his buddies ( horse's). Just a marvelous tail. And it does have guts , guns grizzlies, plus helpful people and caring strangers. I didn't care for the term indigenous person it just seemed so strange instead of the tribal name, thats a very minor thing though. Oh well. Super book.
This book is a wonderful read for anyone who has a dream to accomplish something so seemingly impossible that few believe in. Even if you just enjoy reading inspiring stories of overcoming adversity, I highly recommend this book. I am an avid horse lover. I have always wanted to do something special with my horses, but I always let "things" get in the way. This book has truly inspired me to listen to my heart and to work hard to accomplish my dreams.
This book is a favorite of mine. It is a unique travel tale but what i particularly enjoyed was his embracing of his hosts and their culture. How in the world this man rode all day long and partied all night with his hosts is beyond me but it really seemed as though he got the max out of his adventure. I'm an endurance rider and some of the things he does with his horses, the busy roads and bridges he rides along is not for the faint of heart. Some may call it irresponsible but it is unfortunately the reality of anyone trying to accomplish a long ride in our modern world.
I don't think the author really knows that much about horses, even though he managed to complete this ride. He said he thought that Bruiser was huge at 15.3hh. The smallest horse I have is that size. The riding in traffic and riding on bridges just brought back terrible memories I have of stupid people trying to run over me when I was riding my own horses. Parts of this book are great but most of it is sad. I read Aime Tschiffely's book years ago and liked it, this one not so much.
Awesome book for any equestrian or adventurer. I was skeptical at first because I thought it was going to be a lot of walking and internal thoughts, but it was much more than that. All of the new towns, stories, history and people kept me from putting the book down. I read the entire book in 3 days.
I really enjoyed this book. The way it is written made me want to keep reading. It was not long and drawn out. The story being told is one of amazing adventure and quite unbelievable. The way he tells it is almost in a matter of fact tone which kept me truly amazed
Adventure with Filipe on horseback through every unbelievable scenario imaginable! I truly enjoyed the excellent details he is very capable of describing, his honest emotions and his love for his horses.
I had the pleasure of meeting Filipe at the Dude Ranchers’ Convention this year and hearing his story, what a great guy! This book is beautifully written and is a remarkable story about his remarkable journey! I’m excited to read about his other two long rides in his next two books.
I felt this book rather than read it. It was beautifully written and inspiring. I squirmed, smiled, cheered and cried.
I would say that the editing was not great as there were spelling and punctuation mistakes.
I almost stopped reading at the beginning when it was mentioned that he was in Cardston, Alberta and then Okotoks, Alberta (which didn't make any geographical sense).
I'm glad that I didn't stop reading though, as the book along with the journey was a complete triumph!
Possibly my favourite book that I've read this year so far and I can't wait to start the next one!
This is now my second time reading this book, and I’m sure I will revisit it again.
Filipe is an inspiring individual, having met and interviewed him just a month prior to him setting off on this incredible journey, following him through each of his OutWild TV dispatches and reading every one of his documentary pieces for the Toronto Star, it’s been a story that I’ve never tired of. It continues to renew my faith in mankind and the tenacity of the human spirit.
The book takes you through a whole range of emotions, as he writes as if the reader is riding right their beside him through the hilarity and the God fearing moments, and then there are the moments of pure catharsis.
Written for anyone who has a dream, the lessons Filipe learns and shares on his long ride are universal.
He writes in a style that makes the reader feel as if you are a true companion and confidante. He reveals the depths of his own emotional and spiritual growth and transformation, which is equally inspired by the horses who partnered with him to achieve this amazing ride and the people he meets along the way, who bestow upon him their generosity and belief in his journey.
It was alright. I'd say his greatest nemesis was bureaucracy and he's a surprisingly naive romantic. Perhaps that's what it takes to complete a monster ride like this.
An easy read. It was exciting! No trying to spice up the word play just straight forward. I love these adventure books, so inspiring. Lucky for him he got to live his dream!
