Moving back to Vancouver Island with her new horse, Red, seemed like a good idea at the time but now Astrid is seriously doubting her decision. Her family is just as crazy as ever, her archery career is taking a path she doesn’t like and her best friend Hilary is acting so strange. The only solid thing in her life is the horses and her friend Rob who is turning out to be someone she doesn’t want to lose. But when life at home becomes unbearable Astrid has to decide if finally standing up for herself is worth risking everything.

I had spent the last few months worrying about Astrid until this book finally appeared! Having spent my life as the little fat girl, I have a special affinity for her character. Genevieve McKay writes with a unique understanding of the combined mental illnesses and characterised that can make a child's life a living hell. Astrid is a character you take to heart, even as you want her to strengthen her survival skills. While some of the other characters are not as well-developed, we still see the strong support structure ready to catch Astrid when things reach their tipping point. I look forward to the next book.
I really enjoyed Astrid's continuing story, she is often in a state of transition but is moving towards where and who she needs to be. Horses have clearly impacted her life so positively- her confidence is a struggle but she is moving in the right direction. Can't wait to see how she handles life in the next book!! Read thru Kindle Unlimited.
Back on Vancouver Island with her new horse, Red, Astrid is wondering if she made the right decision of returning home to her father. He's not very supportive and very demanding, but Astrid gets along fine with her stepmom. Her best friend, Hilary, is acting strange. Is Astrid confident in herself to make another move? She has befriended Rob who is now part of her riding and training horse life. She has the opportunity to live with another family while her dad is always away from home any way. She takes on a part-time job of cleaning stalls for the new neighbor who is upgrading the large house to a B&B, and enlarged the stable and making an indoor riding ring. This story is heartwarming and at times tense with a few heartbreaking events. There's lots here for young adults to learn from this great story. I totally enjoyed it.
This is my first review for this series. I know, you're supposed to review each book, but I was so fascinated with this story that I found myself rating and immediately humping to the next book. Harris's struggles with her insecurities and in the bumpy road to becoming a self confident young woman are carefully defined. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and more than once wanted to rush to her defense. I truly hope that Ms. McKay plans to continue this trilogy, as it is clear there is so much more to Astrid's story.
I enjoyed all three books in this series. It's written for young adults or teenagers. There were complex themes about teenager emotions and adult abuse that were handled very well as well as basic themes that were not contrite or very predictable. Very well written and I look forward to the fourth book in the series.
Wish I had learned even half of the training. For rider and horse, that I have read in your stories. The games on horse back, I have done. Best times ever had with my horse. The way it is written, you could picture it, not only this book the other books as well. Good job, well done
I really enjoyed this fun book. The slow steps taken to build the new farm, stale and riding arena were the same ones taken to build up the talents of the horses, the riders, the archers and friendships!
Really great book. The lessons in them are also great. It's wonderful to see how Astrid works things out in her head and learns these life lessons. Can't wait for the next book.
Anger is a very bad trait to let get out of hand. It really does destroy relationships. The barn activities and horse care and riding were so descriptive in this book you felt like you were there. I enjoyed this book from start to finish.
I like stories about horses. They listen to people who the loved. There always one special horse like Red in our story. The fact that it changes the thoughts pattern of how Astrid parents treat her, to find out ma y other were looking out for her all these years.
Okay horsey story, but leaves a lot to be desired as far as editing goes. There are words missing all over the place and the grammar is not up to Ms McKays usual standard. Perhaps the series was finished in a hurry.
Every single one of these books is so good. The characters are really fleshed out. They are believable and likable. Well, almost all of them are. The portions about the horses are extremely accurate as well.
What a great storyline! Sometimes a book hits your core and leaves you so thankful that you read it, this is one of those! Well written with a message!
You can tell the author has spent a lot of time around horses. This book made me wish I had a huge farm by the sea where I could ride. Overall an enjoyable read.
Another excellent installment in this delightful series. It's great to vicariously live a "horsey" life through Astrid and an excellent cast of characters.
