She has badass, monster-fighting superpowers. She's learning to live with that.

It’s been four months since Olivia Woodson Brighthall accepted her supernormal heritage, four months since Emma went evil, four months since Ben went to prison. Now Olivia spends her days balancing supernormal life – training, hunting, and improving her abilities – with normal life – school, family time with Dad, and hiding her secret from her friends.

When Portland is flooded with more supernormal beasts than ever before, a warning from one monster suggests someone is coordinating the attacks. But who?

And then Olivia starts seeing visions…

LeeAnn Elwood McLennan is the author of the Dormant Trilogy. Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, she was always looking for any opportunity to read – under the covers in bed, in the car, and in class using the book hidden in the textbook trick. When her father introduced her to sci-fi/fantasy through a book of short stories from Astounding Stories, the possibilities in every word captivated her interest and her daydreams involved other worlds, magical powers and time travel.
Root is the second book in the Dormant trilogy. The final book, Emerge, will be out in 2018.
Though she graduated from Clemson University with a degree in English, LeeAnn has spent her career working in computer engineering related fields. LeeAnn lives in Portland, OR with her husband, Andy, and three cats (number of cats subject to change). An exciting continuation of the Dormant series. We learn more about the world of the "supernormals" who live within our own world. We also delve deeper into the villains of this secret realm. This is fast-paced, with a sympathetic protagonist who kicks butt! Thoroughly enjoyable for teens and adults.

Book 2: Root picks up 6 months after the events of Book 1: Dormant, in which Olivia Woodson developed the supernormal abilities she’d been suppressing since childhood, in time to help defeat a rogue supernormal cousin who had joined a terrorist organization. That cousin is in prison, but the rest of the Brighthall cousins are kept busy by an influx of monsters, many of them rarely if ever found in Portland, OR. And Olivia is having visions of her cousin breaking out of prison, but that’s impossible: supernormals don’t have visions.

Olivia is equal parts appealing and exasperating, for the same reason: she thinks like a teenager. She makes bad decisions for good reasons and continually finds herself in trouble with authority figures, usually because she’s trying to stay out of trouble. For example, she keeps her visions to herself because she’s sure she knows how the adults will react and she’d rather not go there. With good reason: more than one of these super-powered adults is dealing poorly with past trauma and tends to blow up at the nearest target. Young readers might miss that aspect of the story, but I found it compelling and moving. Olivia’s normal father has processed his grief over her mother’s death much better that her supernormal aunts and uncles, who aren’t used to needing help. Olivia’s secret strength may be her connection to the normal world, so I was pleased to see her make an effort to maintain relationships with her normal friends.

Although there’s some “sequel syndrome” here, having to re-introduce characters and situations, it is lessened by the introduction of a host of peculiar, goofy, gross, and/or terrifying monsters, such as a vampire-like thing that feeds on human lymphatic fluid. There were almost too many for me to keep track of, but that may have been the point; I think Olivia felt the same way.

Meanwhile, Olivia harbors warm feelings for another young supernormal, but he’s locked up and in a medically-induced coma to suppress his mindreading ability. When he’s released to help track the escaped prisoners, Olivia makes additional ill-advised but well-intentioned choices that lead to a road trip, a ghost town, grave peril, and a cliffhanger ending. There better be a Book 3!

I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher.

Supernormal Legacy Root is the sequel to Supernormal Legacy Dormant. Olivia is finding cool and creative ways to use her fire and ice powers. Uncle Alex is less energetic now that one of his kids is dead, so Olivia has less motivational reinforcement from Uncle Alex, but now that her dad knows about her powers, he can be there emotionally. Kevin is sad that his brother is dead. Hugh is super dead. Uncle Dan has kinda removed himself from the rest of the family after learning Emma has turned to the dark side. Emma is still evil and working for the terrorist group in the last book. Aunt Kate is trying to keep everyone together as new problems arise for the Brighthall family to solve.

The powers in this book are really interesting. It would be cool to think about if you had the one of the powers. For example, fire and ice would be cool, but fire would only be used to start campfires to be honest, and ice would have more uses to just cool things down.
Super speed would be really nice because if I ran and jumped, I would theoretically go flying, it would look and feel cool but could be really only be practical if I can control if I'm normal speed or super speed it goes 1 to 100, people would start to suspect something is off. These are only two of the powers in this book. I recommend you buy this book and think about which of the powers you’d want.

This exciting sequel delivers even more punches and monsters than the first! The Brighthalls continue to live their super lives after the losses at the end of Dormant, thought it’s taken its toll on all of them. Olivia’s struggle to balance her normal and supernormal lives comes to a head, and we get to learn even more about supernormal culture.

All this is happening while droves of monsters plague Portland, Mountain of Ash continues doing nefarious deeds, and the Council is investigating the family’s connection to Emma’s betrayal!

The new character Six—sent by the Council to investigate the Brighthalls—might be my new favorite character. I won’t spoil her backstory or ability, but her character is such a cool and original idea, and it’s so great to see her grow.

Also, that cliffhanger ending! Can’t wait to read Emerge!

This adventure just gets more and more fun. The characters are getting richer, the actions scenes are getting more exciting, and the universe is expanding. I loved Book 1: Dormant. Book 2: Root is even better. I can’t imagine how amazing Book 3 is going to be – and imagining is my superpower!

Full disclosure: I am one of the co-publishers of the company that publishes this book. That means I read hundreds of submissions, chose this one, and have read it a half a dozen times. And I just love it more each time!

I hadn't read the first book in the trilogy when I read ROOT. I didn't have any problem following the storyline, and enjoyed the story. McLennans' world of supernormal humans feels like it could be its own Marvel-type universe. Teenage protagonist, Olivia, who is still in the process of learning about her powers (with fire and ice), must contend with everyday life plus a rigorous training schedule--plus a mysterious increase in the population of supernormal beasts. The author leaves us in a great place for third book in the trilogy. Intriguing characters, a fresh and fast plot, and a good mystery.
