Ski Lodge Terror!

Backstory:

The Devereaux brothers are back (Tim and Scott) and this time they are on the hunt for a Bigfoot creature at a ski lodge. Emma (from book one Devil's Bait) is back as well as Scott and her hook up as they try to come to terms with what had happened a couple of years before at Emma's house.

Tim and Scott are hot on the trail of the creature as it wrecks havoc at the ski lodge as the creature not only wants to make life miserable for the brothers but it also wants to kill the guests at the ski lodge. The more they try to hunt it down the more it seems to elude them, but they are determined to track it to hell and back before it causes any more terror at the ski lodge!

Where did the creature come from? Why is it causing trouble for them at the ski lodge? Do the brothers take it out before it can kill again?

No spoilers here as you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This story is a mix with creature feature and there is some romance as well within the pages as the characters, Scott and Emma become involved with each other. There is tons of creature action though with some blood and gore spread around the pages of the book too which required my gore suit as I had to wade through some icky goo here and there within the book.

The story keeps pace well and has some mystery that surrounds the creature. There are quite a few characters within these pages as they are the guests of the ski lodge so a few of them are likable and a few are not so much.

Looking forward to the next adventure by the Devereaux brothers to see what they become involved in next. Giving this book four "Creature Carnage" stars!

My Rating: 4.5 Stars!

From page one, the tone is set. A mysterious creature lurks in the woods and it is powerful, fast and deadly. Tim and Scott Deveraux are back, but this time the investigators of all things strange and unusual are headed to a rustic ski lodge where Scott will have a long awaited reunion with Emma, the woman of his heart. The Deveraux brothers are about to find more than they bargained for in DEVIL’S RETRIBUTION and Debbie Boek has packed this tale full of twists, turns, secrets and lots and lots of snow, so bundle up warm, there is more to this mystery than meets the eye…

There something amiss IN the lodge between the strange manager and the awkward staff, a murder has been committed and the Deverauxs may be next on the list, all this with no phones, no way out and a whole lot of snow coming down with plenty of suspicious guests to wonder about. Too bad going OUTSIDE isn’t any safer…

The footprints in the snow weren’t made by any ordinary creature. They are massive, they look human and they are barefoot, to boot! Looks like Bigfoot has arrived with an axe to grind and no one is safe. Is this creature’s appearance connected to the Deveraux men? Is it on a mission of retribution? Is anyone safe? Will Scott even live long enough to see if he and Emma still have that spark that ignited a few years before?

Debbie Boek has really sharpened her quill for this one, as her characters range from quirky to creepy with everything in between.

Part paranormal mystery, part suspense and filled with a cast of characters that would make the perfect cast for a dinner mystery night, DEVIL’S RETRIBUTION will keep readers guessing until the end as each subplot unfolds and we find that, yes Big Foot exists and it has a temper that can be just as deadly as man’s greed and Mother Nature’s wrath.

(Review in English + Reseña en Español)

In Devil's Retribution, the second part of the Devereaux Chronicles, Debbie Boek plays in a similar way as she did in her predecessor novel (Devil's Bait) with the genres of terror and romance.

This time, the story focuses a little more on Scott Devereaux and his bittersweet reunion with Emma, while he tries to hunt -along with his inseparable brother, Tim- a monstrous creature that lurks in the woods.

Scott has had a very hard time since the Devil's Bait ending and is afraid of not being enough of a piece to compete with the ghosts of the past between him and Emma. We add to that a huge and violent beast that threatens not only the Devereaux brothers, but the people they love, and we have another good story full of action, terror and romance between adults.

In the same vein of the previous novel, Boek has written Devil's Retribution with a very accessible language and with a very good rhythm (except for a detail in the first chapters ... how did Tim recover so quickly from his first encounter with the forest creature?). The claustrophobic atmosphere of the resort for skiers in full snowstorm is very well achieved. The inclusion of the police subplot brings a certain air of mystery, but I feel that it lacked depth.

The main characters develop very well, becoming even more rounded than they already were. The personal story between Scott and Emma feels quite real. I really liked that their relationship has that bittersweet taste and that Debbie Boek has portrayed so well the doubts that arise when people have experienced pain and are forced to return to the source of their passions with new eyes.
As for the secondary characters, some seem too stereotypical and although it seems that they will have more weight in history, they remain at the end as simple extras that serve their purpose of giving cohesion to the story and playing their roles. I would have liked that there was a little more depth to some of them.

The common roots of Boek's terror do not reach me fully yet; I would have liked that the creature had been more enigmatic and a little less typical, although it is well constructed. The action is quick and fluid and there is a good dose of violence and blood (and bad smells), but at times it seemed to me that the relationship between the Devereaux and the creature became elastic and a bit repetitive.

I liked Devil's Retribution, especially for the development of the main characters and their mutual history, and for the reflection on the response of all animated beings to their own personal catastrophes. If you like cryptozoology, action-filled terror and romance, this novel is an interesting bet. I'd like to read another one on this series.

-----

This is the second book of the series. This book starts right away with action which got me into it. As I read, however, there's a lot of romance. So, if romance is your thing and you like horror thrillers, this book is up your alley. Me, I'm not too fond of romance, but it kept the story rolling. The action was great and overall, I did like the book. It's a pretty good read.

All my reviews are spoiler free, but it's really diffiult to write a review of these first two books, Devil's Bait and Devil's Retribution, in what will hopefully be a really long series, without giving spoilers becasue all I want to do is recount moments from both books! Which in itself is probably the best recommendation I can give becasue these are a lot of fun.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy these books. I'm not a horror fan, I find most horror derivative and, frankly, boring, prefering to stick to the classics like M R James and Lovecraft but these were so fast paced, full of well fleshed out characters and events with a rich and believable world, that I connected on an emotional level, having no option but to become completely engrossed.

I read the first book, Devil's Bait, in 2 days, but tried to take my time with the second one, Devil's Retribution. There is a definite improvement in technical ability between the first and sencond books, which isn't to say the first book isn't well written, it is, but there's a confidence in the writing in the second book that is missing in the first.

The best thing I can say about an author is that they leave you wanting more, and boy does she deliver on that!

The Devereaux brothers are back and so is the unexpected. A call from a friend leads them into their next adventure. There is a stinky, loud, angry creature that is living in the wilderness. It moves quickly and has some rudimentary form of logic. This creature has a score to settle with the Devereaux brothers and woe to those that are in the way.

The creature will make life very difficult as it destroys indiscriminately to achieve its goal. How do two guys defeat something like this? How do they protect innocent people who unintentionally get in the way? What kind of creature is this and can it be defeated?

Once again, Debbie Boek has a well written story that all but turns the pages for you. While this is Book 2, you don’t have to read Book 1 first. I recommend reading the books in order as some key events in Book 1 will aid your understanding of issues in Book 2. Much to my delight, a character from Book 1 appears in this story too. Like an old friend, it is good to see her.

This book is full of action and very entertaining. There are many unexpected occurrences that keep you guessing. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two books of this series and know that Debbie Boek will deliver a third book just as terrific as the other two.

Debbie has once again delivered with a story that is captivating and leaves you waiting for more. Following up on her first book in this series, I was wondering if she could keep the momentum going. She does! The characters are interesting and we'll developed. She managed to capture how 2 brothers can be mad enough to need space, yet pull together when they most needed each other's help. I like the nuances where you think you've figured out who is responsible, only to get to that twist. I can't wait for the next book.

Devil’s Retribution is a fantastic follow-up to Debbie Boek first book in the series Devil’s Bait. I must say I read this book even faster than the first and couldn’t wait to see what the next page would hold. The characters are fleshed out even more so than in the first book and give you a sense of understanding for the reasons they do what they feel they must do. I would highly recommend this book along with the rest of the series and can’t wait for the next book to come out.

A fast paced pager turner. Mystery, danger, romance and excitement throughout. I had a hard time putting it down. I have definitely found myself a new author.
