Hedgehog yawned. "Time for me to go to bed," he said. "So soon?" said Rabbit. "Yes, Rabbit," said Hedgehog. "You are a day creature and I am a night creature. That is the way it is."

Every morning Rabbit has to say good night to his best friend. Even though Rabbit understands that's just the way it is, it doesn't mean that he has to like it. The truth is Rabbit doesn't like it one bit. During the long hours of the day, he misses his friend something awful and wishes that just for once Hedgehog could stay up with him all day. When a rainy day leads to flooding, Rabbit's wish comes true. Both Rabbit and Hedgehog are forced to flee to higher ground, where they spend the rest of the day together. And what a day they have!

In this charming sequel to A Little Bit of Winter and The Birthday Presents, Rabbit and Hedgehog realize that sometimes there's nothing like spending the day with your very best friend.

The author has made a good sequence to the book, first he starts by showing the friends meeting in passing and wishing for change, then moves on to a normal day for rabbit, and finally moves to the unusual circumstances of that day. Even when disaster strikes, instead of worrying about it, these two decide to use the opportunity that has arisen and to have fun. This is a really good message to give to kids, whom, although they need not fret about life yet, will feel this pressure as they get older.

Rabbit and Hedgehog once again find their differences at odds with each other: Hedgehog must sleep during the day when Rabbit is awake and wants to play with him, and Rabbit must sleep at night when Hedgehog is awake. While Rabbit is missing Hedgehog during the day, it rains so much that Hedgehog is forced awake and Rabbit is forced out of his burrow because of the rain. Rabbit gets his wish and plays with Hedgehog all day! (These illustrations are VERY cute.) At the end of their long day of play, Rabbit confesses to Hedgehog that he thinks the rain was his fault because he wished to play with Hedgehog while he was sleeping. Hedgehog doesn’t mind—he had a lot of fun playing—and wished that Rabbit will one day stay up all night and play with him.

Hedgehog and Rabbit are just so sweetly understanding of each others’ differences even when they make their friendship hard. They compromise and accommodate each other as true friends ought to without judging the other’s difference.

Recomand.

A sweet story of friendship despite differences and genuine caring for each other. Fantastic illustrations are just the icing on the cake. A great read aloud.

Olemme lukeneet vähän ajan sisään monta eläinten välistä ystävyystarinaa, joissa toinen ystävyksistä elää päivisin ja toinen öisin. Aina tarinoita lukiessani mietin, kuinka he ovat päässeet ystävystymään yli päätään?
