Pilgrimage. Tom Abrahams

In life their are the sheep, the sheepdog and the wolf. The sheepdog protects the sheep. Whatever the cost. In this epic tale of survival, James Rockwell will do whatever it takes to protect his family and friends. Damn the cost or anyone who disagrees with his methods. Rockwell becomes the Hunter, instead of the Hunted. The world as we know it has suffered an EMP occurrence. Is it an enemy attack or an act of nature? Some of the survivors will take advantage of this event for personal gain. Most people in fear will submit. Not Rockwell. This is an excellent read! Enjoyed immensely!

James (Rock) Rockwell and his family are on an island off the coast of Portland, Maine when an explosion sends a tsunami their way. Realizing that no one will come to their aid they seek higher ground until they can find a way home. After leaving the island they discover that civilization has dissolved into the chaos that threatens their lives at every turn. Can they adapt and manage to get home? And, is home any safer than anywhere else?

Abrahams combines three novellas, Crossing, Refuge, and Advent into a standalone novel, Pilgrimage: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Story. The story is loosely based on the The Perseid Collapse series of books written by author Steven Konkoly. It is very well done and follows Konkoly’s timeline. The characters are as real as they get. The family makes heart-stopping mistakes that keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the story. The emotions tug at you as you read about their struggles with the new reality that surrounds them.

Having previously read each of the novellas I was surprised to find as many errors in the combined version as I did. A few were contextual misspellings while the main portion were continuity errors. The story was every bit as good as it was in separate pieces. Abrahams seamlessly transitioned from one part to the next.

James made me want to knock him upside the head on numerous occasions. The man can’t walk without tripping over something.

Even with the mistakes, I would recommend reading this novel.

4 out of 5 stars.

A Collection Of Three Stories That Read Like One

4.5 out of 5 stars

Originally published as three novellas partially based (set in the same world) as Steven Konkoly’s Perseid Collapse series – Pilgrimage (which I can’t spell to save my life) takes a normal family and throws them into extraordinary situations. Will they survive or will they perish? Will this new world be too much for them?

Coined as the everyday family surviving type of a book – I wasn’t sure where Abrahams was going to go with it (but if you’re familiar with me, you know that I love his work). Pilgrimage starts in Maine (one of my all time favorite places and we meet a family who is out on vacation trying to relax a bit from their crazy lives (and getting over a death from the pandemic also based on a Konkoly story). We meet the Rockwell family and are introduced to the father a high school teacher.

James Rockwell (Rock) was one of those unforgettable types of characters. He’s not quite to the level of Marcus Battle but was memorable in different ways. The high school teacher was a nice touch – he was able to talk about science and some of the what was happening more than the average post-apocalyptic character can (and I enjoyed that thoroughly).

They are very quickly thrown into the muck when things on their remote island start to go off the rails. They are forced to survive by any means necessary and find out more about themselves and each other as things get harder and harder. I loved watching the family get by and the interaction between the kids, wife, and Rock. It was interesting to see them concerned for each other but also to play off each other’s strengths.

I can’t go much more into what this family endured, but the ending (and last third of the book or so) was a total roller coaster of emotions and action. I wasn’t sure just what was going to happen. I want to quote the ending but it would give too much away.

The changing from book to book wasn’t as harsh as I was expecting it to be and they really worked well together. Couple that together with Pierce’s narration and you have another wonderfully written and performed post-apocalyptic books.

This is the third book I’ve read/listened to by this author. I’ve previously listened to The Alt Apocalypse, Book 1&2. I look forward to listening to more in that series.
This one is a compilation of three novellas, and it is obvious while listening since the story breaks down into three clear segments. Each segment has the family facing a separate hurdle during their attempt to return home. I have to admit, based on happenings in the book, and considering the family was together, I’m wondering why they continued to fight to get home. Kinda unrealistic. But, then we’d have missed out on the third segment of the book and some great conflict.
There are a few convenient circumstances when despite little or no training, more than one of the main characters are a great shot under pressure. Again unrealistic. Despite this, the way each character emotionally handles the disasters is plausible. We are informed of survivalist ideas without being too preachy or repetitive. Personally, I preferred the first part of the book. This is a book that I am glad I listen to you, was entertained while I did but will likely not listen to you again. I also think his Alt Apocalypse books are better- they are ones I would listen to over again, especially to catch the references to different characters in each book.

This is the fifth book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Kevin Pierce ) and I would listen to more. All have been apocalyptic books. He reads this genre very well.
His female voices are good.

There are no explicit sex scenes. There are scenes of conflict, but not excessive violence or swearing.

I received a free audiobook from the author with the option of leaving a review.

So here goes.

This is based on the Perseid Collapse series by Steve Konkoly. Not sure if that makes it fan-fiction, but the characters are unique (to this story), just the "universe" is the same.

Pilgrimage has certain elements that set it apart from other apocalyptic tales. For example, it's set during the first ten or so days and it details a rapid collapse of society, as opposed to a slow decline.

However...

You've read this before. Despite the premise, the events in the book could have happened a year after. Or twenty years. There's little to make it unique to being smack bang in the middle of the apocalypse apart from some dinner table arguments.

The MC is a God-fearing science teacher turned killing machine, who seems to be too Rambo too soon. He has a moment late in the story where he questions his choices, but deals with it inappropriately - "Kill 'em all and let God sort it out" is essentially his thought process. His wife is his voice of reason early on, then encourages him later, while his pre-teen boy is all set to plug people. The other characters are the usual preppers with military grade weaponry or random civilians who end up seeing the light (by shooting people).

I've heard the narrator before (Erebus), and he has a tendency to make characters sound like they're preaching too you, he has a weird patronising tone that gets my goat. Maybe I'm just the sullen teen type.

On the whole, not bad, but not much new on display here. If you want some post-apoc action and "Walking Dead" style setting (no Zs though), jump on board, but it's definitely got a rinse/wash/repeat vibe to it.

Having read Tom Abraham's Alt-Apocalypse series of books, I also had Pilgrimage on my kindle to read as well. I decided I'd give it a shot since I enjoyed the other series, the results were a bit more mixed here.

Pilgrimage is a story set in the Perseid Collapse Universe from the book series by Steven Konkoly. I haven't read that series so keep that in mind. Maybe I would have appreciated it more that way, but I'm somewhat doubtful about that.

I think my main problem with this book or collection of three novellas to be more accurate is that I never really felt all that connected to the characters. It's not that I disliked any of them, but our main family is so focused on surviving that characterization just took a bit of a backseat. Not to mention that our main character James Rockwell turns into a lethal protector super quick in the story and it just felt a bit off. Since the novellas show the Rockwells in different parts of their journey back to their home this also means that side characters aren't really developed all that much.

There was also something that kind of bugged me about the description of the antagonists of the final novella. It felt like they lacked any development and were just the personification of bad to be bad. Of course the squatters have to be crazed drug addicted murdery type people. It just felt a bit lacking compared to the antagonists of the first couple novellas.

It's not a bad story by any means, it just felt average. For me at least the characters really make or break what could be called a fairly average post-apocalyptic book situations. While I didn't dislike our set of characters they also didn't really feel all that unique either.

I'm really enjoying Abrahams' books. His Alt Apocalypse series is really good. This book is in the same vein - apocalypse-y. Abrahams is good about continually moving the plot and characters forward. There are times for characters to breath, think, and reflect but in a natural way; unlike what you see in such media like The Walking Dead, for example. The story is fairly straight forward - a family is out camping on vacation and when "the event" happens they try and make it back home. The main character, "Rock" (yes, they do make a Dwayne Johnson joke about it), is a smart school teacher who is kind of a prepper. While he, at times, is super smart it doesn't become a McGuyver situation in how I thought it was going to work out. He's just a father/husband trying to protect his wife and kids in a bad situation and does it fairly smartly. There are no big twists or surprises here but there doesn't really need to be.

A few areas where the story kind of lost me is a couple of things. First, before whatever "the event" was in this book there was a worldwide plague that occurred and killed a lot of people. That isn't really revealed until about halfway through. While this does explain a few of the prepper people you meet in the story, there isn't much change in the world from such an event that occurred so recently. Another thing is that society breaks down a little too quickly and factions rise up a little too quickly as well. Not huge misses but the world seemed to be missing some buildings elements. If you're needing an Abrahams fix until the next Alt Apocalypse book, this will do. Final Grade - B +

I was able to purchase the combined novel Pilgrimage through Audible, which includes all three novellas of the trilogy; Crossing, Refuge, and Advent. Unfortunately Goodreads does not retain Pilgrimage, but does carry the three novellas. Pilgrimage is a story of survival and perseverance. James Rockwell’s vacation with his family on a little island off the coast of Maine is interrupted by a large explosion over the water. Putting two plus two together, as any red-blooded physics teacher would do, James assumed a tsunami was on the way. Bailing out of that situation we follow James and family as they are determined to get home to Maryland. In Refuge they stop at a friendly ranch to recuperate and wind up in a firefight. Advent finds the family making the last stretch across military controlled zones. The characters are well developed and likable. The story is quite believable and kept a good pace with periodic action. Kevin Pierce is amazing as usual.

Something has happened, perhaps an asteroid or a meteor crash that causes a tsunami on the east coast and an EMP that has wiped out wiped out electrical systems. A group of people on on vacation and try to get home and run into the usual problems in this book with people going violent and the breakdown of society. They meet some people who become friends but have to fight off invaders at the one place then they get home and have to fight invaders there.

Maybe I've read too many of this kind of book since I think this one is pretty much just like a bunch of other books I've read on the subject. There was nothing that really grabbed me about this book. The characters were standard, what happened was standard and there was nothing really different that caught my interest.

Great book - love the genre - and narrated by one of my favorites, Kevin Pierce. It was originally published in three smaller parts, but this is all 3 together in one comprehensive story.

I am obsessed with post-apocalyptic survival stories lately, and this one is awesome! I was on the edge of my seat (in my car, mostly, which is no easy feat! lol) the entire time, really enjoyed listening, made my looooong commute a ton of fun.

I'm not familiar with Maine, but I'd love to see it someday (assuming we all survive! hahahah), loved hearing about the area.

Great characters, well written, and great to listen to. Great job!

This is a new to me author, but he hooked me from the first and it was hard to put down as I followed this family on their journey.

The Rockwells have traveled from Maryland to Maine for a relaxing vacation, and it was, until the night before they were to leave for home. James awoke to a strange light over the waters and it soon became clear that either a bomb had been dropped or a massive EMP had occurred. Whatever, it left the eastern coast in a state of panic, darkness and looting people.

This is the story of how they and their two children made it back to Maryland, facing all kinds of threats only to find that squatters had taken over their house and neighborhood. Read how they took it back and made peace with their new world.

There's nothing new here. This is a trite, contrived story stereotypical of this genre. The characters are flat and not particularly likable. Worst of all, it's far too preachy, both religious and political.

It's better as one book. It would have been seriously frustrating as separate novellas. Although it doesn't end in a cliffhanger, the story is still unfinished. The question remains: How do they survive?

Kevin Pierce's performance is top notch. Too bad he had so little to work with.

Pirated Plot from Another

Started reading the book and it seemed familiar. I read a series similar to this a couple of years ago. Only last time most of the plot was in Maine and New Hampshire not in Pennsylvania.
Same fortress in the woods and very similar defense of the fortress.
What threw ,me off at the start was that the tsunami occured.
I don't know why I continued reading... maybe to ascertain it was the same plot or very similar plot.
I do know that in my teaching days, I would have caked this plagiarism and flunk the student.
All in all, a waste of time and money.
Don't waste your time like I did.

Every character action was impossible or unbelievable and stupid.

This guy has no business writing in this genre. Obviously is new to guns. What got me in the first few pages was when the mc, his wife and TWELVE year old climb down 15 ft of para cord. Ever try to climb down a rope? Not easy, try 1/4" para cord. Maybe this guy doesn't know what para cord is and meant climbing rope. Anyway the the made up impossible started here and never stopped. I think the only reason I finished it was so I could bitch about it with a clear conscience. Look Tom, either do a lot more research, or better yet write about something you know about.

Enjoyable, survival/apocalypse...

Decent story, works well as an apocalypse survival story. The plot is a little thin and there's a lot of juggling of characters, particular confusion between the characters of Vincent and Reggie in part 2. Don't really develop a rapport or attachment to the characters which takes away from the experience, but to be fair, it's a mix of three novellas seen together, which is probably the cause for this. Still enjoyable and worth a read if you've extra time to spare.

Post apocalyptic. Need I say more? These kind of books scare me and intrigue me at the same time. Could I handle something like this? I think maybe when I lived up home. I could grow things; hand water supply, knew how to live off the land better. Here in Tx everything is different. Nothing grows the same. Water isn’t the same, dirt? What dirt. I had 10, 15, unlimited feet of good black dirt up one. Here I have maybe an inch of gritty stuff that doesn’t even hold together when it’s wet. Black? No, brown. I love it here but if I had to survive like these books no way.

Well written...

If you like apocalyptic or dystopian reads you will enjoy this book.
James, Leah & their children are on vacation in Maine. They are on an island & must move quickly as a tsunami is forming as they run. They want to go home to Maryland. Getting there will not be easy.
A few good people, but mostly bad stand in their way. Overcoming their odds, a physics teacher practically become Rambo!
Storyline is great, characters well defined. Good work...😊

Pilgrimage: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Story (Pilgrimage #1-3) was a good read by Tom Abrahams. Pilgrimage is a stand-alone post-apocalyptic story of survival. James Rockwell is a high school teacher who is vacationing in Maine with his family. While on vacation an earth-changing explosion sends them on a race for their lives. The must first escape an island in the middle of a tsunami. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.

Wow, wow, wow! Abraham’s has outdone himself on this one! Simply put, the end of the world as we know it comes about and a simple high school physics teacher comes into his own. Surviving appearing insurmountable odds, they make it home, only to find that the new skills and abilities he’s learned will be necessary to survive. A great read!

This is a pretty standard straightforward post apocalyptic story. Good not great. The characters were a bit on the flat side. Story is very action packed. I don't love the way it hopes back and forth in time, but then I've never been a big fan of that. The writing itself is good and I did generally enjoy the read.

Amazing story of survival!!

As a father with a family, I can only hope that I would do whatever it takes to protect my family like James Rockwell does in this story. I was on the edge of my seat thinking…what else is this family going to have to survive just to make it home. Can’t wait to read more books by this author.

A great writer

I enjoyed this tremendously. It was full of action and had great characters. The hero was believable. This is the fourth book I have read by this author and they were all fun to read. I highly recommend this book and I hope the author writes a sequel to this.

Great story

This is one of the most believable stories that I have read. The characters are well developed and are as flawed as everyone that you know. I would like to read more stories by this author.
