The eighth Jiggy McCue story sees Jiggy & his pals, Angie & Pete, as usual, in trouble. This time, they are under threat from the brain of Bryan Ryan, one of their classmates. Bryan's brain is out of control & threatening to take over the world! Only Jiggy, Pete & Angie, the Three Musketeers, can stop it.
This was a childhood favourite series which actually inspired me to write my own series when I was 11 years old so, the Jiggy McCue books will always be so close to my heart. Even if I may not be the target audience anymore, I have always gone back to it just for all time's sake. It's safe to say I didn't enjoy these as much as I did as a kid but I will still love this series and Michael Lawrence all the same.
As an adult, Jiggy as a character is horrible and honestly, really misogynistic. Of course, this book is from the early 2000s and has stood the test of time but my goodness, I didn't realise just how awful of a person he was. I mean I knew he was cheeky which is why Angie was always my favourite character but it almost puts into perspective just what we're letting children read. He is incredibly awful to his mum, making fun of her for her feeling rightfully ignored and demeaned and his dad doesn't do much to help. The part where he forgets their anniversary and he's ungrateful about her building his bike for him... Like my goodness!
I did speed read this, take a long break to finish Harry Potter, then come back to it but it's a quick read, definitely. The book structurally was really boring which is why that break was imminent. Out of the other whacky adventures Jiggy has had, I found this one to be really mellow. Nothing really happens in between, just lots of chatter and Jiggy and his dad being terrible to his mum. However, the twist at the end was really great and I particularly enjoyed the ending which is why I raised the rating from a 2.5 to a 3 very quickly.
I'll always love the flip book at the corner of the pages, it's such a staple for this series and I always love getting to the end and finding the link between the series and the picture. Still a good book so 3 stars.
