This short novel or novella ought to be on the top of anyone's list if they want to see a fantasy treatment of Rome's founder come back to fight within the Ninth Legion. :)

Simple enough, right? And it is.
There's tons of great action, pathos, a little escaping from Hades, and a lot more stalwart fighting against vast, monstrous odds. :)

There DOES seem to be some good history in here but most of it is relaxed in favor of a great beginning to an epic fantasy. It reads like a fun action film. :) Lots of burly men with gladiuses and shield-walls, monsters, druids, and last-ditch defenses.

I'd read more. :)

Remus Rising
By:Jonathan Williamson
BOOK 1

A review copy was generously provided by the author in exchange for a honest review. It is a self published book so I ignored the lack of punctuation in the book.

It was a beautiful book filled with action, action and even more action.Johnathan Williamson has a wonderful way of writing that sucks you straight in.I was so invested in the Romans battled that I had skipped lunch without realizing.
Marcus Aurelius Sisenna, the main protagonist was a hero, fearless and daunt in the face of ever worsening circumstances, he never lost hope or the will to continue on.
The only problem I had with this book was that having no backstory on Marcus, it was hard for me to judge the reason for his motivation or why was he so keen on fighting when other lesser men would have given up.
The book would have crossed all ticks if Marcus was explored as because he wasn't, the book didn't have a personal feel and I felt like somebody dropped me in the middle of the story and ran away without a guide. This isn't a bad thing, many masterpieces have been written in this format but perhaps it would have been easier for the reader to know what's going on before the first five chapters ended.

Being the author's first book, I can determine that he has loads of potential and I will be keeping an eye on his future books.

Recommended: Especially for boys aged 13 and above.

“Remus Rising” is the first novel by Jonathan Williamson and it shows.
It is poorly edited and has a bad habit of changing tense in the middle of a sentence.
That said, I found it an interesting mid-length story combining Roman Britain and fantasy – essentially the Legions battle against creatures from the Underworld, led by Remus (of Romulus and Remus fame).
There's quite a lot of to and fro on the battlefields and the descriptions of Roman tactics ring true.
The main character on the Roman side is the warrior Praefectus Marcus Aurelius Sisenna. His successful defences and attacks see him promoted to lead the scouting of Remus's stronghold, a stone circle which he is constructing in order to open the floodgates of the Underworld, before the main forces, Legions and British tribes, attacks.
But it does not go as planned and the scene is set for sequels.
It also provides a possible explanation of the sudden disappearance of the 9th Legion from Roman records.
The basic plot of humans vs. monsters is solid but the reasoning behind Remus's war on Rome is never explained.
Overall it is a promising start from a new author.

If you ever wanted to feel like you have fought with a Roman legion and experienced all the guts and glory this book is for you. You will feel the aching muscles, the stinging cuts, deep exhaustion in your bones only off set by the adrenaline rushing through your body because you just escaped death when your company finally defeats the enemy. You will face barbarians and monsters out of your worst nightmare. Can the legendary discipline of the Roman army and tactics of an ambitious leader save this legion from Rome's first enemy?

This is action packed. It goes from one skirmish to another battle with hardly any breathing time in-between. It is also full of authentic Roman weapons and tactics. Politics also play a big part in this story but the heart and soul is the experience of the Roman soldier fighting for the glory of Rome, their own lives and the lives of the brother-in-arms.

I hope in the next book there is a little more development about Remus and the Druids.

"Remus Rising" has everything you need for an exciting reading day. It's packed with sword fights, mythical creatures, conflict between man and demon.
The author has a very fluid style of narration which goes till the end uninterrupted. I am excited for the next part in the series where the "Emperor" enters the act.
