Accel World Volume 16 provides the thrilling conclusion to the Accelerated Research Society Incarnate System Study Kit Mode Arc with the nefarious eyeballs which can induce terrible effects upon those who are infected in it. While all aspects to the Accelerated Research Society aren’t concluded, the arc closes enough loose ends to allow us to start new and afresh on the next volume. The plots teased for the future do look rather exciting and promising, especially, in my opinion, the one in the final chapter.
That said, I am glad Kawahara always includes a chapter that basically recaps the previous volume for the first few pages. While that can feel a bit unnecessary when you’re just plowing through these books, it feels necessary and appreciated when you take a break for these, or, in other words, when you buy them on release date, and have to wait several months for the next one. There are often tiny plot points that can be forgotten that he covers in these, and there are also, of course, big plot points that you can lose sight of in the little, tiny battles (for example Haruyuki’s trip to the castle and the little backstory he observed, or some of the Seven Arcs he saw or the fluctuating light). So here, it was appreciated and welcomed especially since this volume concluded the arc. Overall, I enjoyed how things were brought together and I enjoyed all our favorite faces making an appearance and doing something to help Haruyuki out and them doing likewise. It is so rare in these types of stories for the secondary cast to do something meaningful and insightful for the lead . Additionally, I also loved the cover character getting a role in the story.
One of the plot reveals was semi predictable, but this in general satisfyingly ties up a large story line as well as leaving enough direction for where the book can go next. Really enjoyable read and great plot direction.
End of a really long arc, can’t say much about it without massive spoilers. The Accel World stories have been growing darker and more interesting by the volume.
