The Epic continues! Still politically incorrect, violent, and sexual, if you enjoyed Smokepit Fairytales then you will love the follow Sing Goddess, The Wrath of the Fonz. A war story combined with the supernatural in the style of a classical epic to tell a snarky, uproarious, and very poignant tale mixed with an edgy Sci-Fi and fantasy twist to keep you guessing. While on a NATO training mission gone awry in Latvia the Russian Federation invades the Baltic States. Hank and Doc are stuck in the snow of far off northern lands fighting for survival. Never losing their nerve. However, things go poorly when the Marines push into Russia. Ivan is a formidable opponent, and Death is an equal opportunity employer. Who will survive?
Tripp Ainsworth joined the Marines as a combat cameraman so he could steel people’s souls—sorry, bad handwriting; he meant steal. He’s put his boots down in every time zone and refused to take a nap in any of them. Somewhere between firefights and film reels, he outwitted a sphinx, gave cured ham the disease it needed the injection for, and started writing stories to make sense of the absurd. Legend has it that after Afghanistan, he found God—or at least inspiration—in a burrito behind the Purple Church in Oceanside. When the woman who made that divine creation, Sister Maria, was deported and took a vow never to cook again, Tripp went AWOL, stole a nuclear submarine, grafted its reactor into an AMC Javelin, and cooled it with Jägermeister. Time travel happened. Mussolini challenged him to a race, Dracula refused a drink, and Stalin tried to weaponize Maria’s recipe. Somewhere between chaos, faith, and a hangover, a writer was born. Today, Tripp writes books like Smokepit Fairytales and The Litany of Vise—gritty, darkly funny tales about war, ghosts, and the long, strange road to redemption. He’s still chasing the perfect burrito.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first instalment of the Smokepit Fairytales, and I was happy to see that the sequel continued upon everything I enjoyed about the first and found a way to improve upon it in nearly every way. Tripp did a great job in making a novel that is targeted towards military vets and current serving members and finding a way to describe everything in a way that someone like me, who has no combat experience other than what I've been exposed to in the media, can be able to understand it and take away the same level of enjoyment that the piece was intended to. As the title states, we are exposed to a lot more of the Fonz from the first novel and it was great to learn more about him and the marines under his command. I can't really go into anymore detail without giving plot points away, but what I will say is that reading this book is what I imagine taking a shot of vodka through your eye would feel like. An adrenaline ride from start to finish.
These books are gory and gruesome and vulgar. Once again, I state- these books are not for the faint of heart. There is bloodshed and death and guts (literally guts spilling everywhere 🤢)... but it isn’t necessarily about the shock factor. Yes this is fictionalized, but it is also real life circumstances. Reading book 2 of the series made me think of all the combat veterans in our history and what they had to go through.
The battles were intense and my heart was wrenched at the thought of those boys in the situations they were in. The entire book flew by as I barely held onto it. I was in tears and in awe at the almost poetic writing style. And then... that darn author didn’t answer all my questions to the pressing issues I wanted solved. Honestly, he didn’t have time. The main character was too busy fighting a war. Thankfully, there are 4 more books to appease my curiosity.
Sing Goddess The Wrath Of The Fonze picks up where Smokepit Fairytales left off and continues to drive the series forward with trademark blood, guts, humour, death and chain smoking.
As war with Russia breaks out, Hank, Doc and éclair find themselves trapped in Eastern Europe. Beating back a Russian offensive spearheaded by giant mechs, it's not long before the Marines find themselves battling for survival in Russia.
The battle scenes are gritty, intense and gruesomely violent broken with moments of humour and plenty of cigarettes. It's a roller coaster of a story with plenty of highs and lows to keep you glued to the pages.
The continuation with book 2 had me consumed. I felt like I was right there with the characters. Just when I thought the action was over, I realized it wasn't, but only building. And it kept building! The chapters flew as I had to know the ending. I cheered with them and felt their pain. The dialogue is superb, and the story line gripping and compelling. A MUST READ. Tripp you did it again, great job!
Ainsworth has a way with words, usually offensive ones. Quick-paced and quit-witted, the body count in this sci-fi war novel was like a horror movie. If that's your jam, this is definitely your book!
Be sure to read the About the Author, too! It was almost as entertaining as the book!
Great book! It’s an amazing read that will keep you entertained in a way the few other books can. Highly recommend it to anyone into syfy military books.
Great second installment of the series! All the excitement of an 80's action movie while still developing characters as the story progresses. Excited to see where #3 takes it!
