My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.
I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.
I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.
Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

Series: The Noble Hearts #3 Publication Date: 7/23/18 Number of Pages: 142
What an enjoyable read this was! I loved the characters, the romance and the set-up for the next book in the series. The writing is excellent and the mystery was good, but the villain was sort of out of the blue.
Jonathan (Lord Stanley) thinks Marigold Smith is a fribble and she is very, very annoying. He’s not sure why he thinks that – after all, he hardly knows her. She is always surrounded by fawning men, she’s laughing, smiling, and flirting – of course, she’s a fribble. It annoys him to no end that she has the audacity to join his Gentlemen and Ladies Literary Society of London. How could a fribble like her even have a thought in her head?
Marigold sees no reason to let the condescending, demeaning men of the world know that she is smarter than the lot of them. Jonathan, Lord Stanley seems to be the worst of the lot as he practically sneers at her. Marigold loves the sciences and particularly anatomy – although that is generally a taboo subject for ladies.
When Jonathan and Marigold both latch onto a journal that each wants to buy at an estate sale, sparks fly. Neither will let go! The wrangling begins – then there is the theft, the murders and the threat of more. Somehow, the journal loses some of its importance as they begin to solve all of the puzzles before them.
I enjoyed watching Marigold and Jonathan realize that they’d always admired each other and work their way toward their HEA.
One thing though – there were a number of references to ‘police’, Metropolitan Police – even Scotland Yard – none of those things existed in 1822. The best there was, was the Bow Street Runners – which the author also mentioned.
Definitely an enjoyable read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Omg so much laughing out loud. Funny, I absolutely loved loved loved the characters and storyline. Marigold and Jonathon just cracked me up. I’m excited to start the next book hopefully dad’s story. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜
'They never expected a tug of war for a book to end in love….
Lady Marigold is the last of the Earl of Pomeroy’s three daughters to be married off. She has never found a man as intelligent as she is or who treats her like more than a feather-headed piece of fluff, so the single state is fine for her.
Jonathan, Lord Stanley, belongs to the same elite book club as Lady Marigold, who annoys him to no end. In his esteemed opinion, she is nothing more than a nonsensical chit who doesn't deserve membership in their exclusive club.
When they both attempt to buy the same journal of a deceased member, a man well-respected in the science community, a tug of war begins. The battle for the book throws them into murder, danger—and passion. Something neither of them expected.' ____________________________
Where did this characterization of Marigold come from? In the first book in the series(about Elise) Marigold is painted as very much like Juliet and greatly looking forward to her come out and marrying. The youngest of the family, she is quiet and the most shy of the three sisters. Elise is painted as the odd one in the family for being a bluestocking. And now not only is Marigold outgoing and confident, she is a spinster in her fifth season with no intention to marry. Plus she is now a passionate anatomy scholar who attends intellectual gatherings. What. Happened? This is the complete opposite of her initial characterization. I could expect some change in her as she matured, but this is literally everything we knew of her. It feels like incredibly lazy writing to me, like the author needed some way to bring her and - together and instead of creating a plot to compliment the character, she forced a pre-existing character to fit into the tension needed for this plot.
For the Love of the Baron adds a bit of suspense and danger to the series. Which starts off fairly well but it quickly gets frankly a bit ridiculous. It just didn't feel like it really fit fo into the story. And how things happened at the end? Too many cooincidences had to line up for things to work out as they did. And very conveniently the villain is just so easily overcome evern though he was dangerous enough to have already taken live, multiple? To then be so easily taken out?
I almost don't want to continue on with the series, there's been a very definite theme through the books in this series and I don't want to keep reading the same thing again and again. Knowing exactly how each book is going to end isn't great. At the same time, I have read half the series already so I'll continue on. _____
I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited membership.
This was a page turner for me. I love Margold and Johnathan! The story is your typical woman only care about balls, ribbons and frilly things, so why take serious a beautiful young woman who has men trailing begins her? Well Mrs. Callue Hutton makes this type of story shine with originality and great characters. Marigold through no fault of her own ends up in escapades together with Johnathan who has to admit she’s different in a very good way. They fight, argue and break into houses and morgues and yeah fall in love. I laughed with Marigold and adored poor Johnathan. He thought he would get married with a submissive, quiet girl who would run his household without problems. He got an enticing and spirited young woman that made his life better. Oh and the question at the end! I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Thanks for the ARC.
4.5 Stars Lady Marigold Smith, youngest daughter of the Earl of Pomeroy cannot find a man as intelligent as she is or who treats her like more than a featherheaded piece of fluff. So the spinster state is fine with her. Jonathan, Lord Stanley, belongs to the same elite book club as Lady Marigold, who annoys him to no end. In his esteemed opinion, she is nothing more than a nonsensical chit who doesn't deserve membership in their exclusive club. When they both attempt to buy the same journal of Dr Paglia, a man well-respected in the science community, a tug of war begins. The battle for the book throws them into danger and passion. This is the third book in the series & could be read on its own, a delightful engrossing read,.Jonathan & Marigold are well portrayed & very likeable, they both dislike each other but can’t stop thinking about each other & the more they work together to find the journal the more the attraction grows & they also start to like each other. The story is fast paced & I found it hard to put it down. My only criticism was I wished it had have been longer as I didn’t want it to end. I wasn’t prepared for the shock in the last few sentences & hope this will be resolved in a future book
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I adored Marigold! She's such a quirky character who's funny and yet extremely intelligent but manages to hide that part well. Jonathon was what I'd call "prickly" starting out, but the more he was around Marigold, he became more fun. I loved the part about the book, how she was always insisting that she should keep it safe, since he isn't capable and his only response was to kiss her! The twist at the end was pretty good and I enjoyed every bit of this book! Thank you for the ARC, it was a great read!
Read an early copy. Great book. Loved the banter between them and solving a mystery. Didn't know who the bad guy was til the end. Very suspensyand fun.
I got this ebook from a BookFunnel promo, I think, and for a long time thought that what I had was a good effort from a new indie writer. On that basis I was ready to give it an encouraging three-star review, since the writing had a pretty good flow to it and the plot, although as preposterous as any plot is when its purpose is merely to get the protagonists to the HEA/HFN, wasn't that bad.
And then I came to Goodreads to (finally) record the read and discovered that this was a novel from an indie writer who has published many times, so now I'm completely confused. Did I get an early draft or ARC instead of the finished novel? I don't think so, since GR gives the publication date for this one as 2018. Did somebody pirate it and put it up through BookFunnel? (Although how that would make sense when it was a free download, I don't know.) Was it a first book put up as a freebie, and the author had never reformatted it from its early days? But it's a third in series . . . .
First, the formatting. I can't recall ever downloading a book that was so badly formatted, which is fairly inexcusable for an indie author now that there are so many ways to produce a well-formatted book. It was as if there were a hard line break at the end of every sentence, which on my Kobo Libra meant that I was reading one-sentence paragraphs the whole time. The author's photo showed up as the cover, her website as the chapter heading; there were numbers at the right-hand margin at intervals.
And then the mistakes, which is why I keep wondering if I got a first draft. I didn't keep a tally, but some really jumped out--anachronistic word use and references mostly, and word mistakes such as "hardy" instead of "hearty" (yes, same pronunciation in some accents, but completely different words). Mistakes that it's easy to make in the first draft (or even the second; I constantly fluff when I'm writing fast) but that should have been taken out before the book was uploaded anywhere, even to a freebie page.
And then the sex. I'm not a reader of historical romance in general, although I've read a few here and there, but I found it all dreadfully coy for the genre. It was mostly a matter of "his lower parts" (really?) being affected and then boom, a fairly perfunctory bit of action before moving on to the Big Realization that this is Twoo Luv, and then an entirely unnecessary sequence about the proposal and wedding which appears to have been designed to tie the tale into the series of which I belatedly realized it's a part. If you're going to have sex in a book, for heaven's sake make it sizzle; and isn't the sex the point of a bodice-ripper?
Sorry for the snark, Ms. Hutton, but I'm clearly not your reader. I liked the way the writing flowed and the story moved forward fast but there were just too many points of irritation for me.
I received a copy from the author; this is my honest review. -The story of Jonathan and Marigold is quite different than all the other books in the series, including the ones following. -It's more of a cozy mystery with untrained sleuths with a bit of suspense and almost no romance. The story flows at a nice pace with believable (and unbelievable) situations. The characters are well developed and it's fun to see the main characters from other books appear here and there. -It's too bad that Marigold wasn't more present in other books because we didn't even noticed she liked books. She wanted a husband and was happy to go to all the outings and meet with the other sex, not stay home and read books. -The end is a bit odd and unexpected; a twist that doesn't really belong. -Apart from the era mistakes about the police and Scotland Yard, there were also mistake with the nouns and the names, mostly with the father's. So definitely needs editing again.
This book reminded me why I love this author’s writings so much. After a promising beginning of the first novella, the second was so slow to me, I almost didn’t finish it. I truly dislike a story that relies on one question - will he/she? Won’t he/she? Did she/he??? If that’s all you got then - skip it and move to the next story.... ANYWAY this was was not that. It was fast paced, a bit of intrigue, humorous, very descriptive and just an all around good short story. I do enjoy the smooth flow of how each sister’s story rolls into the other. I totally enjoy Papa Pomeroy’s smooth manipulations to move the daughters on to the next stage in their lives and him stepping in each time to bring them to his ultimate goal: Married and out. It will be interesting to see if he handles obtaining his own HEA as logically and without the same “ fertile” results as his daughters.
Lady Marigold fancies herself a bluestocking, but acts like a spoiled brat. Lord Stanley holds the typical views of women that men of that era held. He clashes with her constantly, while she takes offense at everything. They both belong to a literary club, and when a scientist dies, his journal comes up for sale. They both want it, and fight over it, but Lord Stanley is the winner. Then it's stolen. There are two murders to solve, and an unsatisfactory conclusion.
The cover in Kindle Unlimited is totally different. It has what appears to be a bride in a frame, with daisies decorating the design. Quite virginal...and totally deceptive, as the baron and Lady Marigold are like rabbits. This is a bodice ripper cover, and those are always ridiculous. In any case, it's suggestive of the contents.
This is a Regency Romance with a twist. Lady Marigold has a mind of her own and doesn’t want to fit into the mold of a lady. She is determined to live her life as she likes and thus she believes she will become a spinster. Her love of anatomy lands her in an unexpected relationship with Jonathan. Their relationship begins precariously over a fight for a journal they both want. When the journal disappears and the previous owner is found dead, they work together to solve the mystery and end up falling in lust...could it turn to love?
I would recommend this book to the adult romance reader. It does have a couple of steamy scenes, so it is not suitable for a young reader. There are also some curse words and violence.
I've read the first 4 books of the series and they are stand alone.
I felt a connection to the h/H and enjoyed their banter. The h is smart, funny and speaks her mind. I didn't find her to be a "b" at all, but a very enjoyable character.
The H's first impression of the h isn't favorable and slowly she winds him over. There is mild lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 3.5 out of 5 if that. Only described once I believe.
Oh, how I enjoy the h's father and the h's companion. There is suspense, twists and a unique story line.
No cheating, no cliffhanger for our couple, HEA, romance builds slowly and some spice. I recommend this series and story. (ljb)
I always enjoy a good mystery and this regency romance fits the bill. I love that it’s centered around a book club. What a clever and delightful idea. Lord Stanley is a bit stuffy but he’s a great hero and Marigold, who is a charming and adorable heroine, helps him to loosen up. I enjoyed watching these two solve the mystery together and fall in love in the process. Highly recommend this third book in a fantastic series.
Marigold and Jonathan (each not especially fond of each other) both belong to the same literary club and both are intensely interested in the same subject..which causes issue when they both want the same journal at an estate sale. Which one ends up with it? As if that is not already a problem there ends up being more serious complications surrounding the journey which they both get together to investigate which ultimately leads to their hea
I really enjoyed the other books in this series and I love this one even more. I love Marigold. I really thought it was funny that they were battling for a book and they are both members of the same book club. The chemistry between Marigold and Jonathan was really good. I already can’t wait for a new book.
Wow! What can I say about this book! It left me speechless and wondering!
Speechless about Marigold and Johnathan 's chemistry and wondering about what's coming next! I just loved it! Loved it! Loved it! Well done Callie Hutton! I think I just love your humour side to each book! This third installment is best of three!!
Marigold, the last of Lord Pomeroy’s daughters, has a secret passion for anatomy and competes with Lord Stanley to buy the journal of the noted Dr.Paglia. The journal,is stolen and two murders are left in its wake. As Marigold and Lord Stanley try to solve the mystery, they also realize the tension and nd dislike between them is changing. Each book gets funnier and funnier.
I loved Johnathan and Marigold's story, it is funny, and serious at the same time, their characters stole my heart. Johnathan thought Marigold was just alittle silly, and she thought he was too serious. Both seaking the same journal, it will lead to love ever after. Thank you ♥️
Two literary enthusiasts engage in a war over a journal they both wish to purchase that lead them into a partnership to discover a thief, murderer and a deadly secret.
This is such a fun and delightful read that I couldn't put it down.
The characters are warm, hilarious and believable too.
Witty, fun,and exciting. The conversation flows, the intrigue is suspenseful. You can not help but keep turning the pages. An independent woman and a stuffy member of the town makes the realization that opposites do attract. Well written.
Another great love story! The ending was a great twist between Jonathan and Mari being held captive and almost losing their lives and the father and the chaperone. I’m excited to see what happens next!
Loved this book. I have a number of novels by this author and am never disappointed. Have the previous books and looking forward to reading the father and chaperones story. I sincerely recommend this book
Another book that doesn't follow Regency customs or procedures of the nobility. The FC is the daughter of nobles, yet runs all over town with a man or by herself without a chaperone or maid. Couldn't get past that massive faux pas.
I got this ebook from Amazon📚 In 2020. Found in my library.
Another great addition to this collection! Great fun and lots of laughs with Mari and the baron! Unique lady and impossible not to love Lord Pomeroy and Lady Crampton! Love this collection so far! Highly recommended!
