After years on the run, I’ve finally found a home. I’m getting control of my magic and finding my place at the Undercover Protectorate. We look out for each other, and keep the world safe. It’s the life I’ve always wanted.
But when most of the Protectorate staff are kidnapped, my world is thrown into chaos. My friends are all gone, captives in some unknown place, and my home is being threatened.
It’s up to me and my sisters, along with the powerful shifter mage Lachlan, to save them. Turns out, an ancient enemy is to blame. Worse, the kidnapping is linked to me. A primordial evil has risen from the mists of Roman civilization, hellbent on destroying the Protectorate. And only I can stop it.
Captured by Magic is a fast-paced urban fantasy adventure starring a kick butt heroine, a powerful hero, and magic that will blow your socks off.

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
As Ana is slowly gaining control over her Druid powers she’s constantly coming up against the Fates who align themselves with the Roman pantheon. In this instalment she discovers that the new family she has made within the Protectorate are being taken by Demonic creatures which leaves just a handful left to find and save them . I loved that in this story the author returned the sisters to their previous home Death Valley. Ana and her sisters clearly owe a lot to their time there and they truly get to use that knowledge to good effect here. Now it wouldn’t be a Linsey Hall novel if there weren’t elements of mythology and even actual history included and this doesn’t disappoint. Death Valley might essentially be of Native American origin but you will never believe what gets transplanted into it. Yes the author allows herself free rein to up the action, add mysterious creatures straight out of nightmares and even include that which actually exists ! This is fantasy obviously but it’s always a joy to read. Now if I’m honest as much as I read these for the exciting adventures I’m also a reader who enjoys a good romance and I’ve not exactly been wowed by Lachlan previously. Well I’m happy to say I enjoyed the interactions here between Ana and Lachlan and whilst he’s still not as hot as Ares or Roarke who were both swoon worthy I did believe in their relationship and now I’m definitely ready for more. This voluntary take is of an advance copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
I’ve reached the point in a series where I don’t really know what to say that I haven’t already said in previous reviews. However, since this is a great series, I’ll risk repeating myself. This installment was a thrill ride with fun, great writing, and adventure. Ana is still trying to fully develop her powers, and she has a little set-back in this one. One thing I really did like in this book was that we got a small glimpse of the sisters’ past. It’s always nice to see where characters have come from to appreciate where they are and how far they’ve come. In addition, I always love seeing the characters from previous series which we do in this one. I can’t highly recommend enough this great series as this author writes exceptionally fun books! I was provided a complimentary copy of the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
I love Linsey Hall’s novels so it’s no surprise that I was delighted to get my hands on Captured by Magic, book 4 of her Dragon's Gift: The Druid series. This book is, quite simply, extremely imaginative and superbly written. It had just what I wanted including a great, action-filled, plot (never-mind evil Fates as opponents, you gotta admit that a primordial evil rising “from the mists of Roman civilization” is a pretty cool concept) and the advancing of a great overall story arc (I really like the Undercover Protectorate and any series with cats of catastrophe in it has got to be a winner). I frankly adore Ana and love watching her continue to grow in her prowess and take on all comers. The rest of the cast of characters (especially Lachlan, though Bree and Rowan deserve kudos too) is pretty amazing as well. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
I love Linsey's writing and especially this series, but the abrupt ending on this one made me want a drink, "and I don't drink!" The Book its-self was a masterpiece of fighting, searching, intrigue, and endless on the edge of your seat waiting for Ana to fully come to her powers. The details in the story of the search for all the missing protectors keep you flipping page after page, but at the end of the day she's drawn to a book that seems to be the key to getting her full Dragon God Power and it ends "The Crow stared out at me!" The last ending that frustrated me that much was Stephen King in the last book of the Gunslinger. But then that's what keeps us coming back to read Linsey's Adventures, and I always will.
Ana, Rowan, Caro, Lavender, and Angus was on a mission to rescue some kidnapped kids. when the wind spirit appeared to 'help' them, Ana got suspicious, but the others didn't. turned out, her suspicion was correct and some demons ambushed caro, lavender, and angus, while ana and rowan fought the other demons. they called for someone to picked them up so Bree told Lachlan and he teleported there to fetch them, right before they were killed by sudden tsunami. when they arrived to the protectorate, that place was empty. apparently, the recent spike of needs for help from the protectorate teams were fake and most of the protectorate members were kidnapped. the remaining member each got a mission to find a clue of where the others' whereabouts when suddenly, ana got a call from uncle Joe, telling her that yesterday, he saw ali and haris there, running away from something.
Ana called for Lachlan (who was in his home to check for the tracking potion) to take her to the Death Valley. Uncle Joe told her that he sent the djinns to Hider's Haven with one of his buggy and he would lent her the others to fetch them. Ana called for Bree and Rowan and together, they went to the valley, but this time, it felt different. they were attacked by some Nimerigars who shot them with poisoned arrows, solved some puzzle of tree's life cycle and elements, fought Cacus' the fire-breathing giant from Roman myth that Hercules (and Percy) fought, got chased by rabid fauns (HA! she was destroying roman images), and jumped over a cliff which only possible because they were the main characters and nobody actually died in this damned book.
then they met a native-american shifter called Puma Spirit, who also hated the newcomers. he said he would help leading them to Hider's Haven. On the way, they were intercepted by large Roman army with war elephant (were they really human, we'll never know. everything just appeared for the author's convenient, without explanation). but they also suddenly found this half built castle that were made for this tyrannical princess who died alone because everyone left them. they entered her castle, she promised to hold the shield from the romans for 20 minutes while they planned their way out. bree threw lightning bolts to the middle of the army while they bowled others over (speaking of never killing humans, huh). the princess's magic trapped roman inside to give them some head-start.
they met with this giant ghost of Death Mountain who blocked their way, preventing them to reach Hider's Haven. by them the Puma Spirit already left. the ghosts only insulted Ana that she was a half Dragon God, and did nothing while the main characters were attacking them with magic and drove them away (this is legit the stupidest scene in the book). the ghosts finally went away and they managed to arrive to the entrance. after they hid the buggy, Jolinda, the ghost from the 'Death Valley Magic' book, that helped them release the occupants from being harassed by demons (for no reason), came and help them. by then, the roman armies, Cacus, and the rabid fauns were already catching up and they had to move the boulder to block them (Jolinda said those who seek to harm them wouldn't be able to pass, whatever).
they found Ali and Haris, and they said they heard something when they were hiding. the demons that hunted them said they needed to take them to some place called Labirinto di Orvieto (lol, how stupid was the demons). they were given a luxurious place to crash and at midnight, they would escape to the valley to make the portal while the ghosts hold the romans back. they arrived to the protectorate and Ana returned to the stone circle to find out some answer and her mom immediately welcomed her. Sulis also came, scolded her mom and told her to go away, then she told Ana that she hadn't reached her full power yet, hence the half Dragon God. After that, they immediately seek Florian and did the research. they found that Labirinto di Orvieto is some underground passages in the city of Orviento in Italy.
(this part might be a bit confusing because i don't even care to understand anymore) the Fates might be hiding down there but it was hard to break into. but of course they found another entry through Well of San Patricio. they went again at night by the river from central Italy to the city, broke their way in to some tunneled river, fight some demons, riding some sea serpents, climbed their way out to the street where there was people who dressed in ancient attires, found the cathedral and tried to blend in by stealing some clothes. they went underground to the crypts and found some door. they passed through some mazes, found nothing, 'St.' Bacchus came and told them where the Fates were, somewhere in Parco dei Mostri, also known as forest of monsters, and how they were almost done with the spell to do something terrible with their friends.
He disappeared at the same time the priests and villagers (who worshipped the Fates) came and attacking them. they escaped out down the hill and Lachland made a portal back to the protectorate and immediately met with Cade, the FireSouls, their boyfriends, Connor, and Claire. they teleported to the forest of monsters and immediately split up to cover more ground. Ana and Lachlan fought some rabid fauns and demons then when the sensed more dark magic in one place (very logical, indeed), they called for the others. Bree, Aidan, Cass, and Roarke scouted from the air and they reported that there was a nearly impenetrable fortress, but no monsters.
so they headed that way but when they saw giant statues of bears, it came alive and attacked them. it took nearly half all of them to fight one monster and there was more of them but because they were made of stone, Ana could control them. they destroyed the castle's wall (and somehow, didn't kill any of their friends) and set them free, while the Fates seemed like they just finished doing some spells. demons attacked them but none of their friends use magic, and the Fates escaped again, promising vengeance and how they would call them back. Ana lost control of the stone animal and they turned back on them. they immediately teleported back to the protectorate and Caro told them that the Fates casted a spell that bound them to their will, making them their slaves. the only thing that keep them save was if they stayed in the protectorate.

Captured by Magic is the fourth book in The Druid subseries of Hall’s Dragon’s Gift series. It’s the journey of Ana Blackwood one of three triplets destined to become dragongods imbued with powers by different pantheons of gods so that they can perform great works to help mankind now that the gods have left Earth. At this point in her story Ana has received several powerful gifts from the Celtic Druid gods and a fair ability to use them. Despite having led two major assaults against the Fates, killing one, Ana is still a trainee at the Underground Protectorate’s Academy of Magic hoping to at some point graduate to full fledged operative like her sister Bree who is a dragongod with all of the powers given to her by the Norse gods. As the story opens Ana along with her sister Rowan (who has lost her root magic and is still waiting to receive her dragongod magic) and two other trainees Lavender and Angus led by Caro a full fledged Protectorate operative are in a river gorge in Utah looking for a group of children who had reportedly been kidnapped by demons. I guess it does me no good to dwell on the fact that Ana has already proven herself to be the most resourceful and powerful magica among this group and should be leading them. Or question why its being treated as a training exercise and Lavender is being allowed to lead it? You just have to roll with it because the scenario fits the author’s narrative. Ana suspects this entire operation is a trap but no one but her sister Rowan will listen to her. The others rush into the trap and are captured and spirited away by demons. With the help of Ana’s boyfriend the powerful Arch Mage/Shifter Lachlan, Ana and Rowan make their way back to the Northern Scotland castle headquarters of the Protectorate. There they discover that eighty percent of the Protectorate’s agents and trainees have been likewise captured and disappeared. Now the search is on led by Ana and her sisters and Lachlan to find the missing people and rescue them. This involves a harrowing trip across the girls old stomping grounds in the magical version of Death Valley which as if it weren’t already deadly enough is now contaminated with evil black magic put there specifically to stop and capture the Blackwood sisters. Then there’s a dangerous trip to the home of the Fates in Italy to try and discover where their friends are being held. Once they have this information they amass a small army of what is left of the Protectorate’s personnel, and their powerful friends from Magic Bend whom are always there to lend a hand when its time for a big battle. Our ragtag group of heroes travels to the Forest of Monsters in central Italy where their friends are being held by the Fates and their minions. Ana uses all of her Druid powers to lead the charge to free her friends. Which they do. But there’s a hitch. The captured Protectorate agents have been cursed by the Fates. If they leave the protection of the Protectorate castle they will become the slaves of the Fates and forced to use their powerful magic to do their bidding. And there’s another problem. At some point during her journey/battles in this book Ana learns that she is only half a dragongod meaning there are more powers she needs to receive which may or may not require her to give up her root power of creating a protective shield. This fact is confirmed by the god Sullis who gave Ana the power of life and healing. But Sullis is no help in explaining what Ana must do to gain all of her powers. All she does is give Ana an unhelpful warning that she must do it and she must do it soon. So in reality this book more than any other is a cliffhanger intended to set up the final book in Ana’s story where she must learn how to gain all of her dragongod powers, defeat the Fates and release her friends from their curse. And at some point in the final book she has to finally not just sleep with Lachlan but do the deed and cement their forever love. If you’ve enjoyed the rest of the series you’ll enjoy this book as well. It’s great to see the Blackwood sisters working together, the Magic Bend crew helping out with more than enough action and adventure as they face danger and death on a daily basis (sometimes more often) to defeat evil.
Content: this series is VERY light on romance. I wouldn’t even put it in that category. Yes there is a romance between Ana and Lachlan but it it by no means a main plot in the story. There are only a couple of kissing scenes in the whole series and any thing more then that happens behind closed doors so to speak and is barely even implied.
I honestly read this series in like 2 days as I was laid up in bed to sick to do anything. This is the first series I’ve read by this author so I missed the first series in this collection. That being said I don’t think it affected my enjoyment in the book. I did miss out on understanding some of the characters better but it didn’t affect the story line. I enjoyed this series. It was recommended as a paranormal romance which I don’t think it is but it was still be really good. The works the author created was incredible. I loved that she weaves the Celtic myths and gods from our history so seamlessly into this new world. I enjoyed Ana. She was strong, brave and loyal. Same with Lachlan. They were able to get through this battle together because they leaned and trusted each other so much. The ending of the book lacked a little for me. When all was said and done it was just that. Done. A get together at the local pub and a slap on the back. I guess I was just hoping for a little more then that with Ana and Lachlan. With them going through so much together I guess apart of me just wanted a little more. Regardless it didn’t change my rating of the books. I didn’t stop and review every book in the series. I just read straight through so I’m not going to break down my review for each book. The gist of it is there is a great evil in this world that is trying to destroy it. Ana and Lachlan, along with her sisters and friends must stop that. Trial after trial, puzzle after puzzle Ana and Lachlan face it together. I really enjoyed when Bree and Rowan (the sisters) joined in the search by Ana’s side because there was a great dynamic between the 3. Ana coming into her magic was a good ride as well. Her magic could be a little confusing at times and other times I wondered why she didn’t use a different skill or search more about her power. But it was a faced paced story and I don’t think it would have fit into it as well. This author wove a world that I was sucked into and really enjoyed. I will definitely be reading more of her books.
There are a few little missteps, IMO. The women take out several people with sleeper holds that are casually described as lasting an hour (I didn’t know these things came with a built-in timer). Rowan, who has no access to her magic, uses a bow and arrows for distance fighting–I still don’t understand why guns never even get discussed as a possibility. There’s also a quote that goes: "Heck, I was a woman. I was predisposed to carry guilt like a sad knapsack full of misery." This may not seem like a big deal, but through 20+ novels one of the greatest things about this series has been Hall’s ability to not just avoid female stereotypes, but to blow by them like they don’t even exist, without even mentioning them. So to have an “all women” dropped in there out of nowhere gave me a feeling like the screeching of cartoon brakes. It was completely out-of-place.
These books are rather formulaic, and one of the formulas is that each book encompasses one task, which is predictably nailed down in full by the end. This installment partially breaks that formula by having aspects to it that don’t entirely get finished with, which is a wonderful bit of variety.
I love, once again, the respect that each love interest shows to each main female character. In this installment Ana and Lachlan find themselves finally sharing a bed for the night, but it’s mentioned that the behind-closed-doors activity never went all the way. Casually implied is the fact that Lachlan is fine with this–he doesn’t in any way push Ana to go past what she’s comfortable with. It’s never implied that because she’s fooling around with him she should be prepared to go any further than she’s okay with, and it’s about time we normalized this sort of behavior. Serious kudos to Hall for writing this stuff as normal.
As usual, Hall’s greatest talent seems to be her penchant for original, extensive, exciting action sequences. There are rabid fauns, stone beasts, Roman armies, fire-hurling giants, armies of snakes, and more standing in our heroes’ way. No matter how powerful our heroes become, the enemy makes them fight every bit as hard to succeed.
I’m looking forward to reading the final installment in Ana’s sub-series!
The plot thickens as everyone is sent out on rescue missions all over the world. Hardly anyone has left out as people go to help others that are in distress. But the reality is dark and evil. The demons surround each party that's on the rescue mission and kidnap them taking them to an unknown location. 12 people left at the protectorate have to figure out where they've been taken to in order to rescue them right now they have no clue. Out of hundreds of people the 12 friends get other friends to help them go to Seers and anyone they can think of to help locate the missing quantities of people. Ana and Lachlan take Rowan and Berk and go to death valley to find two more of the missing talented friends. there they are attacked by many demonic forces from the Roman era to try to prevent them from getting to The hideout where they're going to rescue their friends.
Dear Fate? fates? What the FATES?! Why must you continue to torture me??
Okay. So, it's a really good thing Hall writes clippingly most of the time and doesn't recycle EVERYTHING... But...what she DOES recycle is about to KILL me because she's been recycling most of the same stuff since book ONE of this Dragon God's cycle thing. Also, what HAPPENED in Chapter 5?! That was THE sloppiest chapter of Hall's books I've read...SO many continuity issues! And yeah, the POWER that the phrase, "thundering heart" (and any thereabouts approximations of that phrase) actually rips AWAY from intense scenes that make you want to speed read is fiercer than any of these characters. Next thing I know, I'm going to be making tally marks to count the repeating offensive phrases by the next book. Here's hoping it's a little better put together than this one was.
I always say I'm going to wait until the next book is released before I read the current release because I invariably want to jump straight into the next book when I finish the current one. Then I get tired of waiting and cave because I just want to know what's happened now. This book is no exception. The final book in The Druid series is coming out later this month but I couldn't stall any longer. This book beckoned me and I had to read it. Now that I've finished, I want to read the next one NOW!
Linsey Hall is an amazing author who knows how to trap her audience and hold them captive. I've been her prisoner since the first Firesouls book. From there I've managed to read all the books she's published.
Wow!!! Each book in this set, The Druid, gets better as we go. Ms. Hall manages to give each book a HFN yet also encourages the reader to read the next book. Ana is special and is still coming into her magic. With the help of her sisters, friends and Lachlan they go on incredible journeys and come up against demons, monsters and other magical creatures in order to save humanity and supernaturals. This is a contemporary magic fantasy that grabs the reader from the first page but also has Roman and Celtic folk lore. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books, especially in this series, by the talented Ms. Hall.
I don't know why I let life get in the way of reading this book but I did and it took ages for me to finish this book but it was amazing!!! I'm both kind of happy that I took my time with this book but also kicking myself as it was great and I didn't devour it the way I would normally. We are thrown head first into the action with this book and it never stops, and I love it. Ana and her friends are put to the test when a large number of the Proctectorate are kidnapped and Ana must find the power to save them. We are slowly getting the missing pieces of the puzzle and it's exciting to see if everything coming together.
Five stars 🌟! As usual I couldn't put it down! I thoroughly enjoyed it, but Linsey Hall did you have to leave us hanging there? Of all places, it was either genius of down right mean! LOL! Now I can't wait for the last book in Ana's Druid series! Then, we finally get to Rowan! What are we going to do after that? I've been reading this series for so long I don't know what I'd do without it. So all you readers out there if you haven't read Linsey Hall you definitely need to........ you will love her books!!!!
Omg i love love love the world Linsey Hall has created, fierce love for there sisters and strong men who dont cast shadows but make them stronger. I cant wait to read whats next and i hope she continues to write in this world even when the sisters are done. This book as you hook from beginning to end and your left wanting more much more lol. I love all the men that have been matched with these strong fierce women i cant wait to see who Rowan finds for herself and what kind of dragon god she is.
I devoured this book in two days. Unfortunately, I had to get some sleep and work. I recently found this series, Dragons Gift: The Druid, and have read the first four books this past week. While I've never read anything from Author Linsey Hall before, hert books have captivated me from the start.
I love the imaginative story line, the action, and the character growth. The Cats of Catastrophe make me laugh, but they kick butt too.
Excellent series so far and I'm anxiously awaiting book 5.
Captured by Magic is the fourth book in Linsey Hall's fifth Dragon's Gift series. Ana and the rest of the members of the Undercover Protectorate walk into a trap designed to capture as many of the members as possible. With only a few members still left, she must return to Death Valley Junction to find out if her friends have a clue to help save the rest of the Protectorate. Overall, I love this series. Hall comes up with fun, quick reads that are addicting enough to want to read them as fast as possible.
WOW!!! I was pulled in from the beginning! Fabulous paranormal world, I absolutely love this series of books, the action starts straight away, and the characters are well defined early on and blossom throughout the series, you can feel the tension building between the main characters and each book always leaves you wanting more. The sub plots plus twists and turns keep you surprised and intrigued. Be warned though once you start reading this series you won’t be able to put the books down so be prepared for some binge reading.
I love the work Linsey produces, I suffer with pain day and night, even with heavy pain medications, however her work becomes more like a movie playing in my head and I get so drawn in I forget about the intensive pain, I'm on the adventure with the team and I'm out there with them on dangerous missions. If a writer can capture your mind completely and help you forget you're an amputee, help push the pain back, and give you some peace then she really is a talented author .....so 10/10 from me
I haven’t come across a book in this series/universe that I don’t like. Ana is an interesting character who you enjoy as much as Bree.
Reading through these second time I noticed how well Linsey sets up the next series. Rowan’s hard work at combat is mentioned several times & our favorite Blood Sorceresses revealed a little of their backstory which I’m sure will play into their series. It’s done so artfully that each series feels tied together. Kudos Ms. Hall!
I read all five in this set while ill and not having much energy to do anything but read so one review for all.
This series follows Ana who's destined to be a Dragon God but can't find her super magic. Pros to the story: tough main character, cool cats, romantic partnership where they don't jump into sex right away, recognition that no matter your strength - your team is what makes you successful. Cons to the story: still too fast from first meeting to lurv, you never feel that any (and there are a lot of them now) of the many characters are in actual danger.
I am so confused right now. These groupings typically come in fours, and yet, at the very end of the last chapter, Ana's still only half a Dragon God? How does that work? Are we getting a fifth book in The Druid? Is Ana's final development somehow going to also be included in what I assume next will be the tale of Rowan getting her powers back?
I'm just feeling that this is not as finished at all as prior story arcs?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Ana discovers the hard way that the learning path of being a druid can be pretty stiff when you're a Dragon God -- well, almost a Dragon God. This is particularly true when the vast majority of the Protectorate appears to have been kidnapped. This leaves Ana and her sisters to figure out who, what, when and where.
To make things worse, Ana hasn't even had her morning coffee yet!
Having read all of Linsey’s previous books, I was excited to read this next installment in The Druid’s series. I wasn’t disappointed, however I did feel like this book was more of a “filler” book- a book that had no resolution and left me feeling like the characters were drifting into the next book instead of actively engaged in completing their tasks. It was still well written, just not what I’ve come to expect from previous writings.
Each story just explodes in anticipation and intensity.
I love the way the stories are all different but have a running thread through them and how each block series ties in with other series the links are just fantastic, the history meshed into the magic is awesome and I am seriously dying for Ana to come into her powers fully because honestly if she can do as much as she has done with half her powers we are in for an epic final story.
With as close to a Cliffhanger that I've seen in these various series. Definitely not a fan of the abrupt ending, and honestly--this installment wasn't as entertaining as most. I felt my attention wander. There were action scenes that went on too long. Nothing really seemed to progress.
I'm happy that there is only one more Druid book, because I'm getting impatient. This book was only a 2-3/4 Star for me.
