Harriet Muncaster studied illustration at Norwich University College of the Arts before going on to get an MA in children’s book illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. In creating the art for her first book for children, she was thrilled to have found a good outlet for her lifelong fascination with miniatures. She lives in Hertfordshire, England.
3.5 STARS This wasn't my favorite of the series, but it's a nice seasonal addition. It's a bit of Frosty the Snowman meets The Nutcracker in that the snow boy that is created by winter fairy magic won't be able to survive in Isadora Moon's backyard for very long, so she takes him in a magic snow sleigh to an enchanted world ruled by the winter fairy queen where other snow-people and snow-animals live. As always the illustrations are utterly charming and the story is well-written, I've just personally never been a big fan of the snowman's-going-to-melt type stories (though this, of course, has a happy ending).
This was a nice little story about friendship and adventures. I liked the that The Snow Queen was in this and that they travelled to her place. It was a cute little book and I'd enjoy more in this series.
Isadora Moon is "half vampire, half fairy, totally unique." This is the first book in the series I have read but there are many others. No prior knowledge of the others is required.
First thing to say is that this book creates a great first impression. It is hardcover with a cute black and pink picture, which includes glitter elements, on the front. The "enchanting pink and black pictures" continue throughout making it a similarly attractive experience if you flick through the pages. The look is topped off by the pages having a shiny silver edge to them. The book really is presented very well and you can see just by looking at it that it is aimed at young girls.
At the beginning of the story Isadora's friend Oliver has an ice-skating birthday party coming up but Isadora is not invited. "I'm sorry. I was only allowed to invite three friends. Ice-skating is expensive!" Isadora is so disappointed. "He's going ice-skating! I've never been ice-skating before." Isadora's mum sees her disappointment so invites her sister, Aunt Crystal, who is a snow fairy, to visit. She comes round and uses magic to make the garden into a winter wonderland with an ice rink as well as some magic snow. Isadora loves the ice-skating. She also makes a snow boy, but because it is made from magic snow the snow boy comes alive. They become friends and have an adventure. "I would treasure the memory of our adventure to the Land of Ice and Snow forever!"
After the story there is an extra section themed with winter-y recipes, guides to making a snow globe and snow flake window stickers, instructions for a game, and some writing tips so that fans can write some stories of their own which they can share with the author/illustrator. It's always good to encourage readers' imaginations.
Perhaps the opening line - "It was a cold and frosty Monday morning" - is a bit cliched and the story line might have elements similar to "The Snowman" but girls should love this book.
I had to read this after my 6 yr old daughter had gone to bed as she is being very territorial about it. Isadora is not invited to Oscar's ice skating party, nor are a few others as it is a bit expensive. Luckily Isadora's Mum invites her Aunt Crystal over and soon the garden is covered in frost and ice and Isadora is learning to ice skate with Pink Rabbit her toy come to life. When the parents go inside she builds a snow rabbit and snow boy, who both come to life! They play and go inside but he does start to melt. Aunt Crystal suggests Isadora travel to the land of Ice and Snow to ask the Queen to take care of Snow Boy so off they go on a magical sleigh made of ice with bat wings too of course. After a lovely lunch and tour of the palace Isadora gets home where it is snowing for read outside so she can invite all her friends over to play. An enjoyable lovely story that has echoes of The Snowman, oh but I found a lot of pages still to read. There are recipes for ice cream, raspberry lollies, spice hot chocolate and special cookies {we are making these at the weekend] Also activities and games to play at home. With sparkles on the front cover and silver sprayed page edges this is a wonderful gift for any little fairy vampire fan.
Violet and I love reading these books together - Isadora is the perfect character for her love of spooky and magical. I appreciated that this one included Isadora grappling with the disappointment of not being invited to a friend’s birthday party (due to the expense involved), and I liked the bonus activities/recipes at the end.
Isadora is a young vampire who loves playing in the snow. When her fairy aunt comes to stay she borrows her wand and creates a snow boy to play with. Gentle adventure for younger children, love the glittery cover and silver edged pages.
Muncaster Mission #8 Isadora Moon #8 Another new character introduced is another charming tale, although our ghost has disappeared after book #6 so we may not hear of this character again. I hope we do and the ghost because we want the series to keep up with the continuity. Anyway a good yarn.
I really enjoyed this book but it has a lot of tricky words that some people can find a bit harder than others but I really think lots of people who likes adventures and magic would like it.
Personally I think it will be a good book for anyone who would like a challenge with hard words.
Sukkersøt bok om vennskap, og som en hyggelig overraskelse har den flere oppskrifter og ting man kan gjøre bak i boka. Det er flere lag med vennskapshistorie her, vel verdt å lese med sine små.
Sweet tale of magic & friendship. Gorgeously drawn characters. All the Isadora series we've read so far have been great - lovely bedtime stories for kids and adults alike.
I loved this book, Isadora is amazing! I loved this book because she makes a snowman to cheer her up and it becomes her new best friend. Pink rabbit even makes a snow bunny friend.
