A novelist, screenwriter and former teacher, Andrew Mackay is the creator of groundbreaking sci-fi series STAR CAT.
His influences include John Cleese, Tom Sharpe, Kurt Vonnegut, James Patterson, Hunter S Thompson, Douglas Adams, Imogen Edwards-Jones, Michael Frayn, Chris Morris, Christopher Hitchins, Bill Maher, George Carlin, and Larry Cohen.
Just completed the trilogy, and I have to say although the storyline and characters were great, the writing was not. Mr. Mackay has come up with a very original (in my mind) storyline and done an admirable job of putting it together into a story. He has not honed his technical skills as a writer. There are some physics errors that could have been easily avoided with just a look at some readily available charts. He has one very ironic error in the third volume. In the story he declares a character dies instantly and only 5 paragraphs later the character speaks before dying again. Nothing in the 4 paragraphs between indicate something brought the character back to life. I found this ironic since the author had a section of author's notes after the digital version in which he notes that his characters only die once.
The number of grammatical, word usage and spelling errors are greater than I, personally am comfortable with.
I did enjoy the story and feel that a great many others would. Look at all the 5 star reviews! I will be completing the series, but felt a review after the first trilogy would be appropriate.
This set of three books are awesome! You have Star Cat Infinity Claws, Star Cat Pink Symphony and Star Cat War Mage all together for your reading convenance and pleasure. You will find it hard to put the books down! You will find yourself on the edge of your seat! You will have jaw dropping experiences through out all three books. Your imagination will run wild with the way Andrew Mackay described how the Enceladus Pink Symphony look. And the cliff hangers are fantastic! Here is my reviews on the three books in this Trilogy:::
Infinity Claws 5 stars
This story got better and better as you went on. Your started with Jamie and Emily touring the space ship after the cat that won the competition had given up her space on the mission, but don't tell anyone, it's hush hush. There were a lot of hushed things that came out in this book and you will be knocked off your seat with some of them, I was. There were a few that my mouth hung open with a "no way" attached to it. Learning the history of the space program and the ship was to say the least fascinating. You felt like you were touring one of today's space ships and learning about the mission it was going on and looking back at the history of our space program. It felt very real and very believable. I cried when Jamie had to hand over Jelly for her new Mommy and home. I looked over at my own sleeping cat, Oliver, who has the same colors and eyes and Jelly does, and knew that it would be to hard to do what Jamie did. See, it feels real, Andrew Makay did a fabulist job in bringing this story to life. The mission started out like any other would and grew with excitement and action as you read on. There are many twists and turns along the way and you don't see a lot of them coming. Andrew Makay is good for that! Example, there is one clue that can give you an idea of a part of what's to come if you don't miss it. I didn't miss it, but I was thoroughly surprised how it played out. As usual, when you are reading one of Andrew Makay's books, you are left with a sense of wonder for what is to come next from him. I just love his work and would recommend his books to everyone.
Pink Symphony 5 stars
This book would make an excellent SyFi movie! It would have to be done like Paddington and Winnie the Pooh. All the way through the book, I kept thinking what a great movie this series would make. Yes this book is that good! The crew and Jelly went through a warm hole, they think that is what happened and found Pink Sympathy. Reading this book was like watching Alfred Hitchcock's, Twilight Zone. It went from real to unreal to is it or isn't it real and back again. The crew learned of traitors on board and had to deal with them or not to deal with them and let a very special collar around their neck take care of them. They learned about being human verses being an Androgyne. Jelly went through many changes that shocked the crew and figured out what Shanta is from Jelly trying to say it over and over again. There are space creatures that in my mind look something like an octopus, but pink. There is a virus that is following them and you cry pink or bleed pink, cool! I kept thinking purple people eater, lol. You see, good SyFi movie! But I have to say the cliffhanger is the best! It left my mouth open and saying "Whaaaaaaat? No Way!" OMG, I need the next book and fast! This book is full of surprises, jaw dropping surprises, loads of action, stabbing in the back, mystery and edge of your seat what's next. Yup! Would make a great movie!
War Mage 5 stars
There is so much to tell that happens in this book, but I don't want to give anything away, you will just have to read it to find out. But I can say that Andrew Mackay takes you on a crazy joy ride in outer space. Well maybe not a joy ride, but a war of fighting pink blobs with spider legs. Jelly is changing more and more with a surprise in store for you. The crew discovers the truth about them and it isn’t taken with good respite. There is s—t going down on Earth, with a group ambushing USARIC and killing key people to save the cats. The cats escape, over a hundred of them and spread out in different directions. It’s important that all the cats are captured and returned to USARIC asap, for they are not your ordinary cats. Saturn puts on a beautiful light display for the crew and the Space Opera Charlie, as a black hole is formed. Can they escape in time? Will everyone make it out? Will Jelly stop growing and changing? And what is Jelly’s surprise? You will find the answers to all this and more in this exciting book. You will go through many emotions along the way. You are left hanging in outer space and wanting the next book. Yes it’s that good! I wouldn’t expect anything less from Andrew Mackay.

This box set contains the first three action-packed adventures of Jelly and the crew of Space Opera Beta. Three shots of pure sci-fi adrenaline from Amazon bestselling author Andrew Mackay:
Total Score: 5/5
Summary: Jelly was entered into the Star Cat contest by her owner Jamie to become the first Cat in outer space to decode a message that seemed to be created specifically for a cat. Now the contest appeared straight forward, but it slowly became apparent that was not the case. The story quickly segmented into different parts as Jelly and the Crew of the Space Opera Beta set out on their voyage leaving Earth and it’s complex problems behind. Jamie never forget Jelly the same way as she only wanted to find her way back home. As the group dedicated to reveal what the Star Cat contest was hiding, they stumble onto more than they expected as they find cats who were being held by the companies scientists. Everyone thought the cats were returned to their owners so why were they being held especially when the head scientist hinted that they were not just cats. The story also enters into not only Jamie’s life, but the owner of the Jelly’s competition. Now these stories appear unrelated, but the series unfolds they are all leading to a confrontation, but that still remains a mystery.
This is a fast paced with a complex plot that took on a life of its own. Experiencing Jelly’s transformation from an average cat to more human like from her time in Pink Symphony. It was fascinating watching her cope with human emotions while still reaming a cat. How it will end or what happens next is anyone's guess and I for one can’t wait for the next book in the Star Cat series.
These three stories are great. First they learn of pink symphony and prove the only animal affected is cats. The space group holds trials to find the smartest and strongest to go into space to decode pink symphony. That's where we meet the cats Bisoubisou owned by Remy, Jelly Owned by Jamie, and SuzyQ 2 owned by Leesa. Bisoubisou wins the trials at first but passes on. They take Jelly in Bisousbisou's place.
In book 2 They are in space and Jelly is doing great until they start to see she is changing. It starts out with her attitude, and continues with her growing in size. They could not save anyone on Alpha or Alpha itself. The people on Beta slowly find out that all but 2 of them are not people at all. They are third generation androids. In a way this was good because they run into some spider/crab like creatures that infect people. At the end of book 2, Jelly is more human like than a cat.
In book 3 The 2 humans are killed and that leaves Jelly and 2 of the androids. Jelly must be protected because she was given some gift by pink symphony. They discover that the "gift" is that she is pregnant. After she has her 3 kittens(she is only half human and half cat). She evolves again and she is now part tiger, cat and human. She goes out on her own to fight a wolf like creature that is revered by about 100 normal wolves. She fights this giant wolf and becomes queen over the wolves and the last 2 androids. The androds do as she says so as not to upset her. They don't want to find themselves dead at her fangs and claws.
I totally enjoyed these books! A fun absorbing read. You can really get into them.
This is a great series and the best thing about this trilogy is of course the books are all in one volume. It’s much easier to go from one book to the next but you should read Star Cat Origins first to set the stage for the series.
Andrew MacKay to quote from the old Star Trek TV show boldly goes where no one has gone before. His writing is original and the reader is captivated by the characters he introduces. There are plenty of twists and turns in the books to keep ones attention.
If you’re looking for a great scl-fi book to read look no further. The crew of Opera Beta will more than fulfill that need as you will be caught up in the happenings in space as well as what is transpiring on earth. Collision courses are set which culminates in book 3 War Mage.
That ending is the starting point for book 4 Killer Instinct which I am looking forward to reading when it comes out. I am interested in seeing how things play out and what surprises Andrew has up his sleeve for us in the continuing epic of Star Cat.
I totally loved the first part, Star Cat. Jelly seems like a normal loveable kitty. I can sympathize with Jamie. It would be very difficult to part from your beloved pet. The second part, Pink Symphony was a bit more difficult to wrap my head around. I liked it, even the weirdness. And it was weird. The changes that Jelly went through, were hard on the poor kitty. But she was up for it. I was sorry that so many of the crew didn't make it. The last part, War Mage, was intense. All those shantas, and coming after them. After multiple problems, they finally are on the way back to earth. Jamie probably won't recognize Jelly. She has changed so much and is now 7' tall. And she has had three kittens. A gift from Pink Symphony. I loved the concept of Star Cat.
Wow. I did not see that coming. I first thought Oh a nice middle school book for pre-teen young adults. Then as I got into it I got emotionally hooked to Jelly. Then they arrived in space and I freaked out. I was also trying to read Ready Player One which I checked out from the library but I had to put it down mid way because I had to find out what was happening to Jelly and the mission. I'm only half way through R.P.O. and have to return it back to the library on the 5th. I then bought Pink Symphony as soon as I finished Infinity Claws and started to read it, bad move, R.P.O. still sits on the floor. And I never considered myself a space opera kinda person, Andrew Mackay's Trilogy changed that. Do yourself a favor buy the series.
Amazing series!!! Do yourself a favour and read it, because it's not often you'll find such an original, fresh, fun story. If I wasn't a cat lover already, Jelly would have turned me into one. The only disappointment after reading this will be that your own cats won't seem as wonderful anymore...after all, they aren't space heroines! ;D
What an intriguing series this is, the characters are interesting and the situations they find themselves in are nonstop that force them to change and grow throughout
kindle unlimited, already read them separately but nice to read them all at once for the 'flow'
