When Hope Sanford’s papa arranges for her to care for an old maid schoolmarm while he seeks work so he can pay the mortgage on their farm, Hope and her best friend devise a plan to bring him home by Christmas.
Chance Manning, a new cowhand on a neighboring ranch, is assigned to spend the winter caring for the Sanford farm. When he learns he’s a part of the plan the girls have devised, he counters with his own plot.
But when both plans are thwarted and a new option is presented which would allow Hope to stay on the family farm, will Chance lose hope? Will Hope get another chance?
Written in Julane Hiebert's trademark humor and heart, HOPE'S CHANCE is the delightful start of a new series set on the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas.
A nice pioneer romance with likable characters. I had read the second volume in this series previously and was irritated by the main characters there. Not so here. Both Hope and Chance (see what the title does there?) are nice young people still learning how to deal with life, love, and freedom. The overriding topic in this book (other than the gradual build to a romance, of course) is having the freedom to make your own choices in life, rather than having "older and/or wiser" people deciding what's best for you.
During this time period in American history, women often didn't legally have as much control of their lives and property as we enjoy today. Hope must deal with this aspect, but Chance also has others making decisions for him and, rightfully, resents this. Because of others' decisions, both MCs don't trust all that is going on around them (or within their own hearts).
The last part of the book is totally satisfying, especially the Christmas part. I was a little disappointed where the book seemed to be heading in the last few pages, but things ended appropriately.
Recommended to those enjoying gentle reads, pioneer stories, and Christian fiction. The religious aspects are ever-present, but not in a preachy manner.
Also, it's written BY a Kansasan ABOUT Kansas, so those of us appreciating that will be happy.
Hope and Chance have lots of folks telling them what to do. I enjoyed the back and forth of being tempted to be rebellious and trying to sort out what to do in their circumstances. I think nearly everyone can relate to their dilemma.
I thought I had the book figured out by the middle. Then a letter came that turned everything upside down. There are some strong secondary characters in this book: Miss Olive, Mr. Thompson, and Tina. It would not be the same book without them.
Block out several hours once you start. You won't be able to put it down. You'll want to order the second book immediately afterwards.
Hope's Chance (Another Spring Book 1) Kindle Edition by Julane Hiebert
A sweet clean historical fiction mid-western romance. Life on the prairie has its ups and downs. The people around Hope and Chance influence their lives. Touched with some humorous moments as well as sad ones, life is not always easy.
This is a sweet heart warming action packed story This is Hope and Chance's story and the character development is excellent. I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it. I look forward to reading other stories in this series and by this author.
