Robot Empire #6

Armageddon

Rate this book
Humanity’s last stand.
The Robot Empire seeks the singularity - one mind to rule the galaxy.
Opposing them is a rag-tag alliance of humans, aliens and a thinking planet called Eden.
Can Arla and her tiny band of infiltrators bring down the megalomaniacal metal mind of ACE and her billions of clones before Eden falls?
This could be the end of intelligent life as we know it.
Armageddon is the sixth and concluding book in the Robot Empire series of galaxy-sized adventures. If you like fast-paced science fiction in the classic mould of Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury and Bear, you’ll love Kevin Partner’s brand new space opera story.

I write post apocalyptic science fiction both on my own account and with Mike Kraus, as well as space opera and fantasy. And one or two other bits and bobs.

Based in the south of England, I've been writing since my teens, alternating between funny and serious. In the mid 1990s, I became a regular columnist for PC Pro magazine and have written a number of business and craft books over the years.

Fiction is my first love, however - I hope you enjoy my voyages into an uncertain future.

Action, intrigue, violent explosions, and to top it off; no one can be trusted!

As with all good books, this one gets straight to the action, right from the first page. From the very first words we are introduced to the fact that there is serious trouble brewing in the galaxy. Someone powerful is causing destruction everywhere they go.

Enter, stage right.
Ace, the Robot computer, the singularity mind.

As we start to read, we find that she is using her vast robotic fleet to attack a group of humans in their space vessels. These humans happen to be the rag tag remains of The Vanis Federation and their remaining allies.

Suddenly, nowhere is safe!

Ace has been taking over every system to add all who are captured to her collective; the singularity mind.

She is gradually spreading herself out across the galaxy.

I love Ace, she is a wonderful character. A sentient computer, she has taken control of every other computer and any human beings she can get her hands on, and is having their minds wiped and having copies of herself, Ace, downloaded into them. A failsafe against anyone attempting to erradicate her. And those not considered good enough for this 'honour' are made into slaves who work for her.

Ace is such a driving force in this story and the scenes that are set between Ace and Arla Starlight are wonderful. Full of tension and a mutual dislike and distrust, (almost like a SciFi version of Eastenders!) In this case, Ace is the character everyone loves to hate!

This story is full of action, and unexpected events. No one is safe. Nowhere is safe. And as time passes, Ace just gets stronger and stronger. But she has made a serious mistake. Taking humans as hosts for her hive mind, is having adverse reactions on the copies of herself. She is begging to change - and not in a good way.

This series grows on you. The way the author has depicted the AI's is so realistic. Of course, all the characters in this book and the series are well written, but for me the AI's such as Doxie and Ace, were a great success. Don't get me wrong, the humans in the book are great but for me, the robots stole the show.

This is definitely a series to follow...its hard to see which way each scene will go, or who will betray who, and I love that about it.

I have to admit it - I'm addicted to it!

Read this as part of ‘The Complete Robot Empire: A Galactic Space Opera Adventure in the Classic Tradition (Robot Empire Collection)’.
This ‘final’ book is certainly action packed with twists and turns aplenty to excite and entertain the reader right up to the last page.
Why have I put final in ellipses?
Because there is still one loose end to be tied up, and that involves getting a free story via a link given at the end of the series, so it can be downloaded to your device.

This story has become so much more than what the first book ever alluded to. It spans star systems, alien races and moral issues. What a brilliant end to the series. The easy way out is avoided, difficult decisions are made, and a sad but hopeful ending is found. I am a very big fan of Kevin Partner's work.

Overall it was an enjoyable series. Each book took the story in unexpected but logical directions, so it never got repetitive. Worth reading.

Humanity against the Robot Empire, how will they prevail?

Many twists and turns are offered as our heroes face off against their arch nemesis ACE.

Well if you got this far in the series you might as well finish it, right?
It's good enough and most of the loose ends are tied.
