Tl;dr - dumb and bad.
I've been reading military romances, and a lot of them aren't my preferred thing (I like character-driven romances). The sample portion of this seemed like it could be decent: the main character, a lonely woman, meets a mysterious man in a bar. There's a lot of immediate sex, which is not my favorite, I prefer a slow burn. But I assumed that the rest of the book would be one of those things where a couple that met and had explosive sexual chemistry meet again and slow things down to get to know each other. I assumed that the conflict in the book would come from practical considerations (the dude is an international man of mystery who can't settle down, etc).
Ah, but "you know what happens when you assume."
There were a couple of things in the opening sample section that I didn't love, but I was prepared to overlook them. But it turns out that those things are most of the rest of the book.
The things I wanted to like:
*a military romance about character and feelings rather than thriller tropes
*there's some chemistry between the leads in the opening section
*at first the writing seemed pretty good
Things I didn't expect:
*this book is basically erotica (which is fine, I just wasn't expecting it), there's not actually a plot. It's just a series of sex scenes and in between the sex scenes there is weird travel fantasy fulfillment.
*this book involves a lot of mild BDSM (which is also fine, but I didn't know what I was getting)
The things I wound up not liking:
*the male lead doesn't actually have a personality. At first he's mysterious and he can't tell the heroine anything about himself. Great! Clearly information will be doled out bit by bit. But actually, it wound up seeming that the book doesn't know anything real about him. He's a fantasy delivery vehicle for things the heroine wants, nothing else.
*I don't like the heroine. She's whiny, entitled, dull, and annoying. Honestly, she felt like a Mary Sue. She had that thing you see in some romantic fiction (often, although I don't know why, when it's more "literary-ish-BDSM") where she doesn't actually seem that amazing on the page, but the male character tells her frequently about how special and precious various of her traits are. Things the book says about her are in conflict. At one point she says that she's terribly lonely and has terrible social anxiety, but at various other points the book takes care to show you that she has oceans of friends who think she's just the best. There's a particular type of self-satisfied fantasy-fulfillment heroine you run into occasionally in romance, I don't like them, this is one of them. This character reminded me of a book I strongly disliked, The Siren, so if you liked that, you should check this out.
*the rest of the book just isn't very good. It has NO PLOT. I was expecting to come back into the book after the opening sequence and then they meet again, something something, sparks fly. Instead it's a series of leaden, dumb interactions, where this guy who is allegedly a top-secret super soldier is able to take time off from torturing terrorists to show up at this lady's romance novel book signing in a small city in England. Then later, he's able to take time off to go on vacation to Italy with her. I did a lot of skimming. Super dull stuff. The book would grind to a halt so the heroine could share dull things about herself and the hero could be fascinated, then there would be more sex.
*I wasn't very interested in the sex. For me, sex scenes are interesting if they express something meaningful about the relationship between the characters and how it's changing. I didn't feel that to be the case here.
This book also ends on a cliffhanger, which I don't care about because I'm not going to read anything else by this author unless I see some magical reviews, but in case that's important to you, this isn't a whole story.
(Also, it's boring and bad.)
Have some things I anger-highlighted:
(They are on a trip to Italy, all of it that isn't boring sex is like this.)
"I'm so clumsy, teehee!" Man, Scott must want to get laid really, really badly to put up with this.
(In the opening sequence, they meet in a bar in Nashville, and he asks her to dance, and she refuses. In the following dumb section, she agrees to dance with him in Italy.)
AND THEN EVERYBODY CLAPPED!
(Scott has started to share small amounts of his quite dull backstory with the heroine on their snoozy trip to Italy, BTW how is it possible that Scott can drop out of his important torture missions to keep randomly showing up to bone? I'm no expert on the global war on terror but... dubious.)
This is complete hogwash unsupported by anything in the text. At no point do you see the heroine behaving selflessly. I wish I could be a romance reader who just skims over this and enjoys the mediocre fantasy, but it always makes me mad, like the book is asking me to do a lot of heavy lifting to prop up its bad writing.
Anyway, two stars, do not recommend unless you are in need of mediocre mild BDSM romantica, I guess.

We spent the next hour enjoying our meals and chatting. Well, mostly I chatted. I talked about my competitive horse showing days and my general lack of coordination when it came to contact sports. We both laughed at a few particularly ridiculous stories about my physical awkwardness. Scott found it especially amusing that I'd chosen to be scorekeeper at volleyball games so I could get out of a semester of P.E.

Nothing was as captivating as his glowing eyes staring down at me with desire so keen, it was almost too much to bear.
The song ended, and he dipped my body. I clutched at him, but he supported my weight easily as he captured my lips with his in a long, slow kiss.
When I melted against him, he finally released me and helped me stand straight. People clapped around us, and I flushed.

"How did you decide that was what you wanted to do? How did you decide to risk your life to help keep others safe?" Shame tinged my admission. "I don't think I could do it. I'm not selfless enough."
His fingers threaded into my damp hair. "You're one of the most selfless people I've ever met. Just because you didn't join the Army doesn't mean you don't put others above yourself."

It's hard for me to give this more than three stars, yes it's a steamy read with two characters who have an unexpected connection with explosive chemistry. However I don't feel like I know them especially Scott it needs more character development for me to feel invested in the story.
Hopefully Mended Hearts will deliver the answers I seek.

Scott and Addison it was only going to be one night ...that is the only thing that either one could commit to. Now these two emotionally scarred people continue to cross paths and they slowly begin to try to give a little more. It soon becomes overwhelming and Scott pulls back leaving Addison once again devastated and wanting to see him again. I am not sure if these two broken hearts can come together once again to heal one another but I am looking forward to finding out!

This is an amazing addicting, highly emotional story of two damaged individuals, who are able to slowly grow together to fulfill the needs of each other, as well as their own.
Addison is a writer of BDSM/noncom/dubcon books. She is also a submissive. Because of her past issues including a demeaning marriage, she somehow thinks her life is worthless. Scott is a mystery, a vanilla mystery. We don’t know anything about him, except he is a strong man who can take control.
Somehow, when they are together, their connection is breathtaking. I love the way Addison is unselfishly willing to forego some of her needs to try to make his life better, and how Scott eventually learns when and how to become more dominant and demanding to give her the security and excitement she craves. And I love how, when they are together, they meld beautifully into a mutually satisfying whole.
This is the perfect book for any woman with a partner, who is reluctant to demonstrate sexual dominance, to read and then share with her hesitant mate. It is almost a guide for a couple tentatively beginning to experiment in the “lifestyle” but, unlike a how-to guide, this story is overflowing with love and beauty and care and protection and unbelievably exquisite eroticism. There were times I had to stop reading to luxuriate in the intense, soul satisfying gratification I experienced just reading these words.
Scott and Addison’s story does not end here, but will continue in another book. Most of the time, I find this annoying, but not here. If I am never able to read the next book, I will always be glad I read this one. It stirred my heart and invaded my soul. Thank you, Julia Sykes. With your words, you are a sorceress.

So when she announced that she was writing WOUNDED HEARTS, an uber angsty love story tale about two lost, wounded souls who find sweet solace in each other’s arms, I knew it was going to be bit of a departure from her typical fare but just as exhilarating!
And how RIGHT I was!
THE STORY:
Erotic romance novelist Addison Burke, who is licking her wounds from a traumatic former marriage, enters the Nashville bar all alone at 1 a.m. looking for comfort among strangers to help her escape her mind numbing pain. And her fantasy comes true when she locks gazes with an enigmatic, pale blue-eyed mystery man named Scott whose emotional scars seems even more deeply entrenched than her own. And as she finds herself stripping herself emotionally bare to him , she longs to know every part of this clandestine alpha protector who keeps mysteriously disappearing from her life, yet somehow always shows up when she needs him the most. But Scott is still wrestling with many dark demons that may destroy them both in the end!
MY MUSINGS:
Julia Sykes penned a HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL story about two wounded lovers who are brought together by fate but will love be enough to erase the darkness from their souls?
WOUNDED HEARTS held me enthralled from page one! And, as always, this author’s narrative is absolutely SPELLBINDING, brimming with sizzling sensuality, raw visceral emotion and stunning imagery. Speaking of the latter, in this story she truly transports you into the scenic European locales that the characters traverse, infusing the plot with a breathtaking romanticism and rich cultural ambience that took my breath away.
As for the romance, the chemistry between Scott and Addison is COMBUSTIBLE…loved their sexy, flirty banter and the kinky interludes are panty melting hot! But their magnetic attraction is so much more than physical! These two share an intense, soul-deep bond, and the tumultuous journey these two embark on together gives you the kind of gut-churning, knee buckling feels that leaves you both GIDDILY EUPHORIC and EMOTIONALLY AGHAST!
Sighhhh…I just love dark, broody men of mystery and Scott is that AND THEN SOME! This hero, who “lives in a world of secrets and solitude,” is such a tortured soul, but even though he is infuriatingly tight-lipped about his life, there is a fierce protectiveness and exquisite gentleness to him that I found utterly intoxicating!
And I especially adore how this chivalrous hero becomes the kind of commanding lover that his sweet Addison desires, and in doing so gratifies this quaking need inside of her to not only be dominated but treasured and cared for and so utterly adored. And he does it with such exquisite reverence and tender devotion that it made me SWOON !
The secrecy surrounding Scott’s life infuses the book with palpable dramatic urgency that kept me breathlessly turning the pages, anxious for answers! Only one small, personal quibble in that regard--since WOUNDED HEARTS is told solely from Addison’s POV, Scott remains an enigma throughout. And I was so fascinated by this hero that I really wanted to unravel all his secrets and glean more insight into the inner recesses of his broken and battered soul. And while I TOTALLY GET why the author took this approach, I feel that getting a few scenes from his perspective may have added even more layers to this emotionally provocative story. However, fingers crossed that we will get to be inside of his head in book 2!!
As for Addison, Ms. Sykes crafted a beautifully flawed, multi faceted heroine who also bears a lot of internal scars, and crippling emotional ailments. But she refuses to let her traumatic past—or her current struggles— define her, and despite everything she has been through, she still has an endearing sweet and trusting nature, with a dash of a reckless , saucy temptress thrown in!! I found the combo of her strength, aching vulnerability, tender-hearted nature and fiery, effervescent spirit a glorious thing to behold!
The palpable tension is sustained from start to finish and the author does a stellar job of weaving erotic romance, intrigue, heart wrenching angst and riveting drama seamlessly throughout! All of which builds up to a TORTUROUS ending that WILL leave you clamoring for more!
BOTTOM LINE:
WOUNDED HEARTS is a scorching hot, heart stirring story brimming with passion and pathos, soul-deep emotion and a thrilling aura of mystique!! Now after that excruciating cliffy, I am DYING for book two! Fortunately, the much-anticipated conclusion, MENDED HEARTS, is coming in September so we will be put out of our misery sooner than later!

Julia Sykes penned a HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL story about two wounded lovers who are brought together by fate but will love be enough to erase the darkness from their souls?
WOUNDED HEARTS held me enthralled from page one! And, as always, this author’s narrative is absolutely SPELLBINDING, brimming with sizzling sensuality, raw visceral emotion and stunning imagery. Speaking of the latter, in this story she truly transports you into the scenic European locales that the characters traverse, infusing the plot with a breathtaking romanticism and rich cultural ambience that took my breath away.
As for the romance, the chemistry between Scott and Addison is COMBUSTIBLE…loved their sexy, flirty banter and the kinky interludes are panty melting hot! But their magnetic attraction is so much more than physical! These two share an intense, soul-deep bond, and the tumultuous journey these two embark on together gives you the kind of gut-churning, knee buckling feels that leaves you both GIDDILY EUPHORIC and EMOTIONALLY AGHAST!
Sighhhh…I just love dark, broody men of mystery and Scott is that AND THEN SOME! This hero, who “lives in a world of secrets and solitude,” is such a tortured soul, but even though he is infuriatingly tight-lipped about his life, there is a fierce protectiveness and exquisite gentleness to him that I found utterly intoxicating!
And I especially adore how this chivalrous hero becomes the kind of commanding lover that his sweet Addison desires, and in doing so gratifies this quaking need inside of her to not only be dominated but treasured and cared for and so utterly adored. And he does it with such exquisite reverence and tender devotion that it made me SWOON !
The secrecy surrounding Scott’s life infuses the book with palpable dramatic urgency that kept me breathlessly turning the pages, anxious for answers! Only one small, personal quibble in that regard--since WOUNDED HEARTS is told solely from Addison’s POV, Scott remains an enigma throughout. And I was so fascinated by this hero that I really wanted to unravel all his secrets and glean more insight into the inner recesses of his broken and battered soul. And while I TOTALLY GET why the author took this approach, I feel that getting a few scenes from his perspective may have added even more layers to this emotionally provocative story. However, fingers crossed that we will get to be inside of his head in book 2!!
As for Addison, Ms. Sykes crafted a beautifully flawed, multi faceted heroine who also bears a lot of internal scars, and crippling emotional ailments. But she refuses to let her traumatic past—or her current struggles— define her, and despite everything she has been through, she still has an endearing sweet and trusting nature, with a dash of a reckless , saucy temptress thrown in!! I found the combo of her strength, aching vulnerability, tender-hearted nature and fiery, effervescent spirit a glorious thing to behold!
The palpable tension is sustained from start to finish and the author does a stellar job of weaving erotic romance, intrigue, heart wrenching angst and riveting drama seamlessly throughout! All of which builds up to a TORTUROUS ending that WILL leave you clamoring for more!
BOTTOM LINE:
WOUNDED HEARTS is a scorching hot, heart stirring story brimming with passion and pathos, soul-deep emotion and a thrilling aura of mystique!! Now after that excruciating cliffy, I am DYING for book two! Fortunately, the much-anticipated conclusion, MENDED HEARTS, is coming in September so we will be put out of our misery sooner than later!

An emotional and riveting story that left me wanting more answers by the end!! Addison and Scott are both battling their own demons, but when they are together, they complement each other and “see” the other person for what they really are! This story was equal parts sexy and sweet as Addison and Scott spent more time together! But I am hoping that in the next book, we get Scott’s POV because I felt that that was what’s missing in this story! Why did he keep disappearing and reappearing? I know it has to do with his job (apparently) but a few chapters into his head would have done so much more for this story, and my connection with these characters. Looking forward to the next book! I need answers!

Oh wow, what an emotional story this is. It is raw, real and so beautiful. I feel like it is very personal, I guess because female character Addison is author. I felt like Julia Sykes pore her heart and soul into this book and I absolutely love it. It is very different then her usual writing, but really, really good.
It has a BDSM elements like her other books, however the story itself is different.
I very much enjoyed reading this book.
It ended on the cliffhanger, but not the bad one. I am eager to see what will happen in the second book and how will Julia end this story as I really don’t know how is she going to do it.
Love how there is a lots of secrets between these two, Addison and Scott. It keeps me want to know exactly what happened to them. We get glimpse throughout the story, just enough to let us use our imagination and try to figure it out. Both of them were hurt at some point and going through lots of pain, self doubt, personal issues. But neither one is brave enough to open up to each other and talk about it. Addison does a little, but there is still much more to her story.

Let's just say Scott isn't going to win any awesome guy of the year awards with the way this ended.
He's gorgeous and attentive but very aloof. He has secrets and isn't able to share them. He is a wall...or he tries to be.
This is not the end;only the beginning. I hope that we get a glimpse of the real Scott.

Wounded Hearts by Julia Sykes is the continuation of Wounded Hero. Now in York England Addison is at a book signing. When she looks up, her first reader in line is Scott. She has been missing him since that night in Nashville. That night was more than she ever expected. Curious as what Scott is doing there, he informs her that one night was special to him. This is the beginning of what I don't know. Addison knows Scott is wounded and has demons. Because of his job Scott can't share about himself. But the stolen moments of time he can spend with Addison is doing things to both of them. His job allows but so much and this is not conducive for a relationship to work especially when both parties are damaged. The story was one of learning. Scott not into the lifestyle learns he finds it interesting and that he likes aspects of it. Addison is loving what Scott has picked up and what he is doing to her body. And what he is learning is making for some steamy sex scenes. A swoon worthy male that thinks he is too broken to love. I love the way the author is telling the story. But I never saw the ending coming. My mouth was left wide open and I wanted to scream. NOOOOOOOO!!!!! I need the next book like right now. 5 stars. A first time author for me. Impressed!

I was hooked by the free prequel and was so happy to get more of Addison and Scott’s story. A word of warning…as I said in my prequel review, this almost reads as Addison’s diary. It has a unique feel that really moved me.

I just finished reading Wounded Hearts and wanted to throw my kindle across the room. Not because the story was bad but, because it was so good and it ends in a ….. OMG I can’t believe you did this Julia Sykes moment!
Scott and Addison are both, for different reasons damaged people. Maybe that is why they found each other. It was supposed to be only one wild night. Addison is an author who writes erotic romantic books. Her pen name is Laura Krane. Scott had been in Delta Force and is now doing something top secret. He never told her what he did or that she would ever see him again. But he did turn up a couple of times. He was at her book signing that she was doing. That’s enough for now.
I felt this was an angst driven book to read. I love that when he did show up he only wanted to care for her. Scott very much was a giver but, then he could only give so much. He had commitments that he couldn’t talk about.
With an ending like the one at the end of this book Mended Hearts needs to come out like tomorrow!!!
Oh, there is no need to read Wounded Hero. Wounded Hearts starts off with the Wounded Hero story.

Wounded Hearts by Julia Sykes is a full length novel, a intense read and deals with sensitive subjects.
I recommend to read the prequel, Wounded Hero, first. You´ll have a better understanding of the characters.
Wounded Hearts picks up some time after where Wounded Hero was left off. Addison is now divorced from her abusive husband, but still fears him and his reach. She´s back in her beloved town and at her signing she gets a big surprise. The mysterious man who stole her heart months ago stands at her table.
Scott is back. But still can´t make a commitment and any promises. But they can´t stay away from each other. The pull is too strong. Both are broken people who want something.
I was hooked from the start and read the book in one sitting.
I can´t wait to read the next installment, Mended Hearts.

Julia loves making us ride emotional rollercoasters and I love it. Addison and Scott are absolutely perfect for each other, both have demons they don’t want to face or share and completely understand each other without having to share their past.
Addison loves to travel and explore her lifestyle allows that luxury. And you can quickly see her pain and understand that she is most likely running from something.
Scott had completely different demons, keeping people innocent and safe comes with a heavy price. Addison gives him back a piece of himself and you can’t help but fall in love with the man he truly is.
But the past is hard to forget and hard to run from... When you continue running and some point you realize you may be running from the wrong thing. I can’t wait for the conclusion to their story and hopefully happily ever after.

the prequel to wounded hearts, wounded hero, sets the stage for this romance. addison and scott meet in a bar and share an incredible night together. scott carries the weight of his military service and the things he's seen, and when addison needs him to dominate her, because that's her kink, he's afraid of hurting her.
months later addison and scott meet in york. half the world away from nashville, where they first met. neither of them have forgotten their night together, and even though it seems as if neither of them can give the other what they need, something keeps bringing them together.

Before you read this book, I HIGHLY recommend reading the prequel, Wounded Hero. In Hero, we meet the main couple of Wounded Hearts. Hero was a delightful, sexy and steamy story about the night Scott and Addison met.
I'm not a new reader to Ms Sykes. I've read the entire Impossible series and the following two spinoffs.
Hearts is an emotion packed story of two deeply damaged individuals. Addison is trying to rediscover herself after ending a bad relationship. Scott is a very mysterious man who disappears without notice. However. He returns to Addison whenever he can.
As in Julia Sykes' history, the tale is very well written and touches on a very sensitive topic. Readers be warned this story may have triggers for some.
Personally, I can relate to Addison in ways I wish I didn't. That said, it was refreshing to read the realness of Addison's issues. It was like a window or light or some other cliche to let the readers know they aren't alone. Except it's done in a way that doesn't diminish the issues or people who struggle with them.

Rating: 4/5 for an engaging, sexy and sensitive read. I loved it.

We originally met Addison and Scott in the prequel Wounded Hero and their story continues in Wounded Hearts. Addison is an erotic novelist who is still healing from an emotionally abusive marriage. She and Scott had a one night stand with no expectations of anything further and is surprised to see him at one of her future book signings.
Scott is part of the Delta Force and is often required to leave at a moment’s notice and he cannot discuss where he is going or what happens on those missions. He hasn’t been able to forget his one night stand with Addison as he feels peace in her company.
This is an emotional and story as both Addison and Scott are damaged in their own way and the chemistry between them is hot. They have a deep connection but is it enough to overcome the past and the differences between them? It does end on a cliffhanger and leaves you wanting more of these wonderful characters. This was a quick contemporary romance that ends on a cliff hanger.
Addison meets Scott one night in Nashville and they have an explosive passionate encounter. When Scott leaves Addison is sad she will not see Scott ever again. However weeks later Scott shows up at a book signing she is holding in York in England. They pick up from where they left off and Addison opens to Scott but Scott is still the aloof, enigmatic military man with secrets.
Although I enjoyed this relatively quick read I didn’t feel any connection between Addison and Scott. I would have loved more background and character development to understand the way that they both were. Maybe this will be picked up in the next book but for me it needed to be more in this book to draw me in.
Overall a good concept of a romance and I loved it was based on my home turf in Yorkshire. I wish I could meet a hot military man whilst wandering The Shambles! Three stars.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....that is literally what I screamed out loud when I finished this book. I had no idea it was in a series and I HATE having to wait to see what happens. Ugh....but I did enjoy the book. I didn't feel like I truly got to know the main characters. Addison, you got to know a little more about because she was more open when speaking with Scott. I didn't like how her happiness was too intertwined with when Scott was around.She has depression and I can see that as being a bad thing in their relationship. Scott was so closed off that you truly know nothing about him. I am trying to keep an open mind because I now know that there is another book. I like where this is going and I am excited to see the characters develop and come to light.

Scott and Addison are pure raw feeling in every single sense, no flowerly stuff this is real two damaged people finding each other each with their own shield built up high of the past and try really hard to open up. We see some things but Scott is still very mysterious but oh lord hes hot and trying some new scenes with Addison which are very intense and so sexy. Were they brought together for a reason, maybe to heal each other because their is so much there, I can see the confidence building and I want more and seriously cannot wait. The writing and the characters will grab you and hold you hostage until the very end.

This is one emotionally gripping read. I fell for Addison and Scott in the prequel, “Wounded Hero,” and tumbled even further with the continuation of their story. Ms. Sykes has a way of penning her characters in such a raw way that readers cannot help but be affected. Addison and Scott each have their fair share of past trauma and are struggling with how to deal with it. Each one has their own vices for coping. The question is will they be able to open up and share their tumultuous pasts to start to heal? If you can handle reading a dark romance with elements of bsdm, then this is one to add to your shelf. I highly recommend it.

I am absolutely IN LOVE with this story!! Addison's journey, her pain, her struggles... it gripped my heart, did some twisting and did NOT let go. Scott's secrets, his history, definitely shows so much hurt and pain as well. They have something deep and special, hot and sweet that was pure and true. The emotions hit, I had to wipe tears and I am so excited for more of Addison and Scott! I WISH I could give more that five stars. Truly.

I loved Scott and Addison's story! The full circle of emotions left me a little sad at times, but then my spirits would be renewed again every time. This book is a true emotional rollercoaster of love, hate, lust, and sadness. It took me some time to read it, because I wanted to truly savor it.
The characters are very realistic and you find yourself feeling everything Addison feels while you read.
This is not like Julia's typical stories, so be prepared for it to feel different. I still loved it though.

WOUNDED HEARTS by Julia Sykes is the story of Addison and Scott.
There is a prequel called Wounded Hero that gives a short introduction setting this book up. You can read this without it but I think I enjoyed this one more because of it. This book does also end leaving us needing the next book to finish their story.
This was such a great, emotional romance. Two people both so wounded that only planned to have a one night encounter but couldn't seem to stop their wanting of each other and the healing they brought to each other.
