The best part of learning a new language is experiencing the culture and diving into activities that will enrich your life and vocabulary. The best way to learn a new language is by reading, and in this Spanish book you will find yourself turning page after page to get to the end of each captivating story that will engage your mind and help you improve your Spanish.
Kind of odd that it is called "10 Captivating Short Stories" because it's one long story. However, it's pretty enjoyable, about a US American taking something like a gap year to travel Latin America. It's kind of like a mini cultural tour.
I do love that the author is probably not US American themselves because the protagonist at one point just goes straight to Cuba without any hassle.
The story kept me engaged, I understood the jist of it, and learned some new words no doubt (hopefully I’ll still remember them). I laughed a few times here and there. It was mostly lighthearted fun. I say mostly because the way it ended was actually unexpected. I won’t give it away, but it’s pretty bittersweet.
All in all, this was an enjoyable read. Anyone trying to learn Spanish, I highly recommend it. Find yourself a copy and check it out, you won’t know what you’ll find in store.
When trying to rate a graded reader you have two challenges. Obviously the first needs to be how the book enhances your learning another, in this case Spanish, language. But to a lesser degree, but still important, is the story it tells.
As many have pointed out in other reviews this is not a book of ten short stories but rather a novella. I think the book is fleshed out with an excessive amount of space given to vocabulary list. If you are ready this as an ebook a downloaded Spanish dictionary is all you need. I did enjoy the summaries in Spanish and English following a chapter. They served to confirm that I was understanding what I had read. In fact, even unknown words could be understood through context.
On the story itself, this is a juvenile tale at best. Young man goes to new places and is invited by strangers to live with them. Makes his way around new places and strangers are ever so helpful.
Useful dialogue and a coherent story start to finish. I like the summaries and appreciate the definitions of potentially unfamiliar words available at the end of every chapter. This was very helpful for someone trying to take my Spanish game to the next level.
