Basically an advertisement for his podcast

Thank goodness this was a Kindle Unlimited book. If you took out all the mentions of the author's podcast, this could have been a blog article. Yes there's a few good nuggets. But the book isn't organized well and just barely readable.

I couldn’t put this book down. Heather and Christopher weave a story of renegades, innovators and success that inspires and educates. I love the real world examples and their raw writing style. It’s like we’re sitting down for a beer (or scotch) and just talking shop. Only it’s much more valuable than just talk.

If you ever wanted to know whether there was wisdom to be learned from a Scotch swigging, punk rock loving, mixed martial artist, retired CMO, airwave blasting modern day pirate then the answer is a resolute “Yes!”

Lochhead teams up with his favourite journalist, Heather Clancy to provide a blue print to help find our place in the world for those of us whose names aren’t ‘trending’, appearing in publications or supported by a galactic empire worth of social media followers.

The message is simple: Be different, not better.

If everyone says they’re the best consumers get confused. They assume if everyone is the best at what they do, the only way to make a decision is to compare. The first thing they compare is price.
Categories make brands, not the other way around. Google is a well known brand but they’re closing Google Plus because they didn’t create a product that was different, a product that was deemed more valuable than the category king: Farsebook.

Consumers need to understand the context your brand lives in otherwise they will ignore you.

Either position yourself or be positioned.

Do people really care about the product or service you are selling?

Category design = Make demand
Branding = Fight for demand

Identify and articulate a problem – design and evangelize a solution

Own a niche. Legendary companies teach consumers to think in a new way.

Good book for the little e

This is a well thought out book, but it is a bit too bite-sized and does not have the depth or study involved with a sturdier offering.

The examples were fine, but also were vague enough to leave it open to interpretation including the idea of luck playing a huge role in these ventures.

I read it in 30 minues save for the last chapter since I have no niche to niche down into. The book can be a great inspiration to many, but if you're like me in the no / old idea phase, you won't get much out of it.

Then again, it only cost me my time so that isn't a bad investment.

Bet on yourself

Betting on yourself is probably the best strategy you can harness to achieve happiness today. Either you'll work on your own dreams or you'll work on someone else's. Your decision. In this book, Heather and Christopher will give you the inspiration and will show you the way on how to work on your own.

I've read this book after Play Bigger. The idea behind Category Design iS the best one I've came up in the past few years in the realm of business, marketing and even personal development. This time, category design is approached under the lense of personal leadership and personal branding.

We need you more than ever. Make yourself a favor and read that book

So I would give this book a 4 out of 5, this book is really helpful for people who need a little more input on the whole entrepreneur business, that will definitely help you in the future for your life. I love how in the book the author really shares examples of how things sometimes don’t end up like you wanted things to be but you just have to continue, the message I received from this book is how it is normal to feel unready when starting a business.

Own The Category

In this book about entrepreneurship, the authors advocate owning the category in order to become unique. Rather than chase after what others are doing, look at what can make you different. This book had examples that would give help to those forging their own way in business.

I just finished reading Niche Down. I loved it! I found the examples were thought provoking. I don't think this book was meant to be a how-to book, but an inspirational text that will keep me thinking about what I have to offer in the future!

A fantastic anecdotal interesting read. A business book for those looking for an original and unique point of view. Topical and relevant and entertaining read that will make sense and stick with you. Worth your time.

Helps articulate a simple concept that is hard to keep front and center in ones mind: that value is primarily created by uniqueness and all else should serve that. Doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, more of a pamphlet really.

At least it was short

This is the kind of book you keep reading to see if it’s going to get to the point, rather than continuing to pitch the core idea. It doesn’t.

Honestly I didn’t really get a whole lot out of this book, and it took me way too long to read. I wouldn’t recommend this if you want concrete tips to takeaway.

I enjoyed this book as it gave me a new perspective for business - most specifically how to create my own place in the market. I felt like some of it was a little redundant as it was written by two authors - something that I’ve decided that I do not prefer in a book. For those of you who are entrepreneurs and are looking for your next idea, I highly recommend that you check out this quick-read first! You may just come up with your next great idea while reading through these thought-provoking messages.
