Diogenes Laertius (Greek: Διογένης Λαέρτιος, lived c. 3rd century CE) was a biographer of the Greek philosophers. Nothing is known about his life, but his surviving Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers is a principal source for the history of Greek philosophy.
The book splits into two major sections. The first is the summary of the philosophy, taken from the writings of the Stoic writers. The summary is well done, and while a working knowledge of Stoicism is helpful, it isn’t necessary to appreciate the analysis. The second, shorter, section is a comprised of biographies of a number of Stoic writers with lists of works written. If you’re looking to learn about Stoicism, this book should be on your list.
