Eadmund Skalleson is broken by grief, sinking further into an ale-pit of despair. But his father is out of patience. He wants Eadmund to be the heir to the throne he so desperately needs, before it’s too late. Before he has no choice but to turn to an unthinkable alternative.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand, and have done for three-quarters of my life. The other quarter was spent in England, where my kids were born. I have three of those, and they’re very cool. I’m a bit demented and thought it would be a good idea to have them a year or so apart. I’m still recovering from that misguided notion, but am convinced that a month in Bora Bora would set me right!
Speaking of travelling, as much as I crave a tropical island escape, you’re far more inclined to find me hankering after snow. We don’t have any of that in Auckland – not a drop! And, although it did snow occasionally in dear old England, I’m still looking for the up-to-your-window sort of snow experience. I come from Viking stock (my grandmother was Swedish), so maybe that’s why I have always craved the cold, white stuff. In fact, my husband and I bonded over our love of scarves.
'Twas love at first discussion about the pleasure of a good scarf!
My reading journey I was drawn to historical romance as a young reader. I loved anything by the Brontë sisters, but I think Jane Austen was my favourite author at that time. It was a toss-up between Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre for my favourite book as a tween. As I got older and developed a real love of history, I became obsessed with anything do with Vikings. I fell in love with Bernard Cornwell and Robert Lowe, Giles Kristian, too. But there’s always been time to fit in the next Diana Gabaldon. Her Outlander series is probably my favourite series ever (great tv too!). History is my one true love, so some of my favourites lately have been C.J. Sansom’s thrilling Tudor series and Patrick O’Brien 19th century naval adventures.
I always thought I would write the Furyck Saga as a historical fiction series, but I never found a period or place where it felt possible. Ultimately, I realised that actual history was far too limiting, so I stepped away from reality and entered the wonderful world of fantasy, and that’s when the fun started…
It took me a long time to become a writer.
I have ring binders and ring binders of stories, screenplays, tv show concepts, and book ideas that I’ve been creating since I was 10-years-old. I was always very fast with ideas but seeing them all the way through was a lot harder, and eventually, as I grew up, life and work got in the way. I would try writing Winter’s Fury off and on, but I never got very far, and dissatisfied, I always gave up, telling myself there simply wasn’t enough time to fit writing in around three children, two dogs, a graphic design business, etc. etc. But what I quickly discovered is that time is what you make of it.
Inspired by an article I read about James Patterson, who got up early to write his first book and fit it in around his job, I started making writing a daily discipline; the idea being that, bit by bit, I would eventually create an actual book. At first, it was tough. It felt like I was training for a marathon and I didn’t even know how to run. But every day it got a little easier and eventually, I started to write more freely, and one day I had enough of a book to show my husband. At this point it was either, forget it again, or keep going.
Tedious. Boring. Ridiculous characterization with the author having no idea who they truly believe themselves to be. A very very poor mans attempt to copy Game of Thrones complexity without the talent to pull it off. Truly awful. No that’s not quite right. Truly a waste of reading effort.
A brilliant first book to what looks to be a compelling saga. Drama and treachery on a number of different venues, all simultaneously playing out in the same time frame. Yes, a very enthralling tale!
#2 The Burning Sea
Being called in to be part of the attack on Hest, as part of the alliance with the Islanders and Brekka, the two pronged attack, from sea and land. Eadmund and Jael were under threat from many different sources. However, with help from friends and family, their backs were covered, and even in a situation where distance caused communication difficulties, unless you were able to communicate on another plane.
This second book of this saga explains a lot, but causes a lot more questions, which we hopefully will see answers in the further episodes.
#3 Night of the Shadow Moon
Our saga continues, with incidents in Oss, Hest, Kalfa, Andala and Tuura, simultaneously. It is fast moving action on all fronts, with siblings fighting siblings, kings being assassinated and members of "The Following", do everything possible to rain havoc down on Jael and her intrepid band of woman and men, trying to preserve life for all. Again an excellent and dramatic episode.
This kept me turning pages well into the night, I couldn't stop reading. This is a book for anyone who loves epic and dark fantasy. The characters are alive and breathing. The world is huge and believable.
Bottomline: A bit heartbroken and devastated with the direction of the books after book 2. Stopped reading because it was making me so unhappy, and left me so unsatisfied that I'm writing the first review in years.
**note--spoilers included**
I really enjoyed books 1 and 2 of the Furyck Saga.
Book 1 was a solid fantasy romance and built a strong foundation for a longer saga and world creation. I could have done with a little more relationship-building between Eadmand and Jael, but the story, dialogue, and individual character descriptions and motivations kept the plot moving. Book 2 took the story to the next level, adding in the complexities of the two-pronged battle at Hest.
At this point, the saga seemed ready to launch into a storyline with complexities reminiscent of Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, adding new character threads to an existing weave. For me, it lost my interest when it became clear that there was no hope to save Eadmund until the very end of the saga. Although I enjoy stories with depth and characters that endure hardship and eventually triumph, I still need some positive reinforcement along the way. I'm not reading fantasy because my day life is so cheerful, I'm reading it to escape into a fantastical world. I look to the characters struggling with the same things I do--love, relationships, mental health issues--watch them learn through trial and error and ultimately work together to triumph over evil and darkness, not just in their world but within themselves. This saga leaves Jael on her own. She has supporting characters like Edela and Aleksander (sidenote --why do so many characters have names that start with E? Please make it easier on us next time), but Jael does not open herself up to them and ask for support. Even Frodo had Sam.
I also got frustrated of the number of times a character that was struggling with something epically difficult would smile because of something small. The number of times I read about Aleksander smiling as he is dragging Axl in the middle of the wilderness with no hope and constant heartbreak around Jael makes no sense whatsoever. On the trip Jael and Aleksander take to the Hallow Wood, they trade smiles non-stop even though they are both empty and dying inside. Perhaps the author was trying to communicate their strength in finding positivity in the present in small ways, but it came off disjointed and bizarre.
Since I'm unloading, another aspect that bothered me is that in book 3, as we are following multiple storylines, it seems like nothing is happening for the entire book. We get one day at a time while characters are stuck doing the same thing over and over again when the next steps are predictable, but its being drawn out without adding much.
Finally, building to an epic finish where Eadmund battles Jael is a good goal, but there had to be a way to create more moments between Eadmund and Jael in-between. Once his soul was bound to Evaine, his storyline became predictable and repetitive. Little scenes where he would feel slightly conflicted then have sex with Elaine, which is such a messed up form of rape. There is a lot of rape in this saga. Not sure if it was warranted. I would have been much more engrossed if Jael had more time with him and they helped support each other. Instead, he became a depressing repetitive character, and she became an unrelatable rejected wife expected to save the world without any support around her.
This review is for all seven books of the saga. The story is a good story, but the writing is average and whoever edited these books did a horrible job. There’s no chapter delineation, and the storylines flip-flop too excessively to enjoy the actual story. How many times portions of a story only last one or two pages. And then we will jump to another part of the world and it’ll last for two or three pages and then jump again. Out of all the thousands of fantasy books that I’ve read, these are in my bottom 10 percent.
Another problem in the book is the use of numbers, rather than writing out a number or hyphenating a number of the number is simply written in numeric script. This is extremely rare and is very disconcerting as most high fantasy books if not all or not written like this and it’s an oversimplification. This is a failure on the part of the editor who should’ve taken care of this. Again these books could’ve been so much more if the editor would’ve done their job.
It’s not that I didn’t like the story, and I have nothing against the author, but by the time I got through the fourth book I was ready for everyone to die just to stop the flip-flopping of the storyline.
I don’t know that I’ll read any more of the authors books, simply because I don’t think I can go through another set of books with a flip-flop back-and-forth of the storyline like this was. A lot of the flip-flopping could’ve been eliminated by simply incorporating it into the storyline itself in the same activity as what others were doing. I also noticed different things about the books where the kings English was written and then US English was also written. That was also distracting in the storyline.
In my opinion, books one and two are the best. The rest spend too much time building out minor characters.
Superlatives everywhere from the great writing, character development, plot twists, excitement and vivid imagination that kept me reading past my bedtime night after night. Those who hate switching between POVs might not be so happy and though I wasn’t crazy about it at first as I learned who the characters were I grew to realize that it was like watching a play on a big stage where various characters in different settings are acting out scenes on a big stage and your simply switching to wherever the spotlight is shining. The interrelationships and story arc is wonderful. Highly recommended!
Everyone needs this series in their life!!!!!! It’s an epic fantasy story told from multiple view points with a masterful skill in story telling that kept me glued to my kindle!! This author is writing something very special with this series and I’d highly recommend it 😁 5 stars!!!
long winded similar to lord of rings or Game of thrones
This is such a long series I read all 3 books and had to skim through about half. The villains that could have been dead already are not it’s taken 3 books just to get to the prophecy like oh my god how much can this be drawn out. Now we’re on book 4 and no villain is dead , the main characters are back at square one. Like what is happening thank god it’s on KU so I’m gonna skip to book 6 and read the last 20 pages but mostly skim just go see how it ends. The writing itself isn’t bad it’s just feels like the author is trying to get as many books as possible out of one storyline when this could have been fleshed out within 3 books not 6. Also this book features constant sexual assault it feels like every book there’s at least 2 brutal rape scenes.
Having read Winter's Fury a couple of years ago and given it a five-star rating, I was looking forward to seeing how it stood up in a reread as part of this three-book box set.
I was still blown away by the story, the characters, the world-building, the action and the suspense, which had me devouring this book, and the following two in this set at a phenomenal rate (for me).
There is a lot of action and suspense in these books and it unwinds at a fast pace, but for me, it is the characters and their personalities that are the highlights together with their interactions, which can be quite blunt and colourful, is such a delight to read.
My favourite author is David Gemmell, and these books remind me so much of his writing style with the action and characterisation, that I would enthusiastically recommend them to my fellow Gemmellites.
I really like this series of books, but I think some of the paragraphs could have been left out. The books could have been condensed. The plot was good, some of the characters were great…some?? (Questionable.) As for the married couple (Eadmund and Jeal), they were a joke if you ask me. They were not together long enough for them to get to know each other. I think that would have been better if they were related to each other or just friends. I think she could have kept the series, but ended each book differently. Leaving a book unfinished like these are sad. But I am going to start the next book because I am curious about how this end. Hopefully, the next book ends better than the first 3.
Do yourself a favor and read this series. You won't regret it. Amazing character building, a believable world that is part real and also surreal, plot twists around every corner, legends, gods, magic, herbalism, strategy, politics, and amazing fight scenes... your imagination will thank you!
Just read it... like now! You won't regret it. Storyline, character arcs, world building, fighting and war, gods and magic... you'll fall into this epic adventure and wake up wanting more not even realising that you'd fallen in love with the characters until it's too late... you'll be hooked and will cry for more.
This series started off rough for me with the first book. It wasn't terrible, but the pacing of the story and the pacing of the characterization was off and difficult to get into at first. However, by the end of the first book, I was hooked and very interested in finding out what came next. By the end of the second book, I was much more in love with the characters. And by the end of the third book, I was sold on this potentially becoming one of my favorite fantasy series. There aren't many woman authored fantasy series and while I would say the first book needed some work, the series as a whole is inspiring and keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Good story line. It was difficult to keep track of all the characters for me. In my opinion some of the lessor important characters were introduced in small groups and with similar names. Some of the main characters were not created with much detail or depth as they were introduced into the story line. Nor did they develope much more as the story went on. All in all it was a good read and at times impossible to put down. I will be looking forward to the sequels.
There was plenty in this series, so far. Including betrayal, love, romance, friendships and kings falling. This series is written well and I feel like I am in an alternate time. Women are treated more like property and to the whims of kings. Even Jael a powerful warrior is subjected to following a king's directive. However, Jael is smart, strong, caring, compassionate and a true warrior. I have enjoyed each book so far, and they must be read in order, or the reader will be lost.
Don't get me wrong , while this is a good story , for m, too much emphasis is placed on the characters love lives . It seemed like every second chapter was dealing with problems in the romances of Jael Alexander , Thorgils Edmund , and even the bad guys . Like I said the story line with attempted takeovers , strange happenings , and battle scenes is basically good but the , in my opinion , emphasis on the romantic entanglements spoiled it for me . I won't be continuing after the first three .
I have spent a week completing all 6 books and I was hooked!
Literally couldn’t put them down, was there parts I could’ve easily skipped, yes, were there parts that seemed repetitive, also yes.. however the story was pretty darn good and I didn’t know what was going to happen next.
My only critique, as mentioned above, the story did appear repetitive in what was happening to Eadmund, his battle to become free was drawn out, only my opinion..
Great humour, great writing style.. really entertaining.
First I have not read or seen Game of Thrones, so when there were reviews comparing this series to that. I was not sure how much I would like the books. But I couldn't stop reading, so a few sleepless nights later, I am hooked. Great story, characters, the building of the story line and all of the great work the author put into these things. Is fantastic. A must read.
i loved the concept of the story and how the history has been interweaved and does drag the story, however i found the whole story slow because of the in-depth (amazing) detail that i struggle to get along with. i found that the next 3 books are where it really gets interesting but you have to read the series in order to understand.
there were some interesting character development
would recommend if you’re wanting a committed read
A story with as much power as any epic I have read
A thoroughly satisfying read. All the boxes were ticked - great characters, interesting side characters, easy fast flowing pace, clever multilayered plot, blood, guts, action plus plenty of feel good moments to ease the tension. Pulled empathy from me for the downtrodden and had my blood boiling for the despicable. And such satisfying fighting sequences! This author deserves the big letters on her covers. Need more.
it could have been amazing! .... But! This "But" is what probably will stop me from reading the fourth! it was way too long, building up, building up, building up... until the rope snapped and I was ready to not care anymore as long as it finished! Then the third book of the saga finished with the gran finale only to leave you there with the whole problem still present and not solved! Not very happy
The books started out really well, and it is well written. However I barely got past the first few chapters. It has more cursing in it than I wanted to read, hear or say. Then it talks about people everywhere humping. It wasn't anything I wanted to read. So I put the book down and started a new series.
An epic fantasy that has all the right ingredients! I’m adding this to my permanent library so I can enjoy it over and over again! It have the prefect amount of magic, love, wars between light and dark, and everything to make this a classic. It reminds me of how I thought and felt when JR Tolkien 1st released the hobbit.
Not happy with the authors declaration that she may return to this series again but not sure when. I will not get any more by this author she's turning into grrmartin and we may have to wait years and while I did love this series I'm not willing to be held hostage again I'm sick of it
A heroine to fight evil. Her Uncle kills Her father and takes over the throne. She is married against Her will to a drunkard. Then when she sobers him up, he is put under a spell. Her brother who would be king, kills their uncle for beating up their mother. There is much evil in the land and good and bad magic. Wow what an adventure !!!!!!
Good entertainment, might even be a 3,5 - which is pretty good, considering 5 is max.
Viking'ish, with a touch of Greek(?), strong female char. Great fights and great action writing. Bought the 4'th book as well, still a good story, but probably won't read buy anymore. Can't remember why, but have a feeling the story became a bit flat....
Only made it about a third of the way though the first book. I didn’t necessarily find it tedious, like many reviewers have said, but… well, yes, the characters’ repeated lack of making good choices, or any choices at all, was wearing on me pretty hard. They spend most of their time standing around feeling sorry for themselves.
