For twenty years I practiced primarily criminal law and civil law (with punitive penalties) as a Deputy District Attorney. For ten years I sat as a Superior Court judge primarily handling criminal matters. During that time I have taught law courses at a local junior college and two night program law schools. I used the Criminal Law in a Nutshell book as a student, a lawyer and judge and I have assigned it as a secondary source in the courses I have taught. I have always found this book (and particularly the most recent edition - the 7th edition) to be a concise overview of the topics encompassing criminal law. I think the book has value to practicing attorneys, judges, and students. I completed reading the latest edition in preparation for teaching first year law students criminal law this semester. I once again found it to be an excellent resource for studying and understanding our criminal law. I will continue to recommend this book.

I've read this book and am re-reading it to prepare for the baby bar. Like Torts it's good for me because it starts with concepts and builds upon them which is better for me than wrote memorization like the Gilbert's Law Summaries which are also very usefull. Of course not a primary source of information, as per the books intro.
