A Montclair Homecoming

Rate this book
When Joy Montrose received her commission to paint a mural depicting the healing miracles of Jesus at Good Samaritan Hospital, she never anticipated forming a close friendship with Evan Marshall. But the bond between the talented young artist and the gifted surgeon has grown, even though their lives are worlds apart. Now, with the family estate falling suddenly and unexpectedly into Joy's hands, she finds herself sifting not only through the memorabilia of generations but through her own heart and aspirations. Is it truly love that she feels for Evan? If so, can she at all reconcile it with the wounded healer's lack of faith in God or with her personal need for freedom to pursue her calling as a painter? In this final book in Jane Peart's beloved Brides of Montclair series, the faith and lives of an American dynasty wind to a poignant, present-day culmination as a young woman struggles with choices of love and obedience that will shapes the years to come.

Hmm...much preachier than all the other books in the series. The only part I really enjoyed was when Joy discovered her family history and went back to see the now-empty and deteriorating family mansion. Getting a concentrated view of the 200 years of history that I just read a 14-book saga about was kind of cool. But other than that, this one was a miss for me.

In this series wrap-up (could be read as a stand-alone), the year is 1980, and the most recent Montrose doesn't even know about her family legacy in Virginia. Most of the story concerns her art project, which turns into a ministry and fosters new relationships. If you're expecting a "then what happened?" for all the characters in the last book, know that you will only see brief revelations, mostly in the form of short newspaper articles discovered by Joy. Not my favorite in the series, but at least the series was wrapped up with loose ends neatly tucked in place.

I liked this one a lot. I thought it was one of the best in the series.
