Melur is a bored, frustrated teenager living in the tropics, fighting with her family, dissatisfied with life. Only difference - she's mer. When she rescues a drowning human man from his capsized sailing dinghy, two worlds that should have been separate, combine and conflict. Like the girl in Hans Christian Andersen's original story, Melur pays a price, with consequences she doesn't fully understand. This is a story about love, betrayal, and reality.
Hi, I'm Fallacious Rose. I also write under the pen name F.L.Rose.
I live on the gorgeous east coast of Australia with my spoilt kelpie, Darcy, and a possum called Edith. I write in a wide range of genres, including some you've never heard of (culinary philosophy, anyone?). I divide my time between writing (of course) and painting truly terrible portraits of my friends. I don't have a lot of friends, come to think of it...
It's "The Little Mermaid, the Real Story". This book has two strengths: it is well-written and it is realistic. I know that "realistic" is an odd thing to say about a fantasy book, but I think it is appropriate.
The writing is handled professionally: smooth. unobtrusive, no typos or clumsy phrasing to interfere with the storytelling.
The author invented cultural norms and behaviors for the mer characters which feel authentic. In fact, the initial chapters are a bit like an anthropology text, providing the readers with an understanding of mer values and social structure. The rest of the book is a story of love, sort of, between two characters with different understandings of their relationship. The emotions and characterizations ring true. Again, the word "realistic" applies.
Well-written mermaid tale that didn't quite tip the balance from "liked" to "really liked" for me, which might have been more me than the book. This one is NOT for youngsters. I was given a copy and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
This is an amazing new author for me and new story. It is a mermaid story and It is amazingly writen with very strong characters and is a realistic story. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves mermaid books to read. This is my honest and unbias opinion of the story.
