A beautifully and comprehensively illustrated catalogue of William H. Johnson's amazing paintings, chronicling the stylistic changes across his career, with detailed biographical and art-historical information. A great painter who should be much more widely known.

Wonderful chronology of the one of America's finest modernist painters, whose biography mirrors the struggles of African Americans in the 20th century. The twists and turns of his life make this a page turner for art lovers. What an inspiring life story with several magnificent plates of his art!

Hello, new favorite artist (among other favorites) I'd never heard of until I saw a massive exhibit at the Amon Carter in Fort Worth several years ago. His work is stunning. To see the cumulative effect of amazing work next to more amazing work filling the whole top floor gallery was such a wonderful experience. This book chronicles his journey from his youth throughout his artistic progression. It was interesting and his work is ready for its closeup.
