한 소년이 방학을 맞아 외가를 찾는다. 외가가 있는 곳은 유독 골목이 많은 오래된 사찰 마을로 독특한 정취를 풍겼다. 어느 나른한 여름날, 그 소년은 끝도 없이 이어지는 좁은 골목에 매료돼 정처 없이 걸어 다닌다. 그리고 문득 정신을 차렸을 때에는 이미 말도 안 되는 상황에 처해 있었다. 오싹한 냄새를 풍기고 차림새도 기괴한 한 남자와 맞닥뜨린 것이다. 그렇게 쓰루야 슌이치로는 처음, 죽음을 보았다.
죽음과 맞닥뜨린 충격이 채 가시기도 전에 불가사의한 사건들을 겪으며 방에만 틀어박히게 된 그를 돌본 것은 괴기 소설 작가인 할아버지 슌사쿠와 유명한 영매인 할머니 아이였다. 할머니의 능력을 격세 유전으로 물려받은 슌이치로는 두 사람의 보살핌 속에서 자신의 능력을 받아들이고, 그 능력을 활용해 할머니의 일을 도울 만큼 성장했다. 그리고 스무 살이 되던 해, 두 사람 품을 떠나 도쿄로 올라오면서 본격적인 이야기가 시작된다.

The Curse of 13 is the first novel of Shinzo Mitsuda's Detective of the Omens of Death series.
Our 20 years old Detective of the Omens of Death had just opened business in Tokyo. When the Detective was a child, his ability to see the Omens of Death from other people made him a freak in the eyes of almost everyone around him, and the young man was still trying to deal with this strange and gloomy psychic ability, and living as normal a life as he could.
His first client is a young woman who was engaged with a successful businessman, but her boyfriend (despite of his young age) suddenly died due to a heart attack at the eve of their wedding. When the Detective uses his ability to 'look at' the young woman and members of boyfriend's family, he can see the shadows/omens of death clinging to each of their bodies like many many twisting, large, dark earthworms.
If the Detective failed to solve the mystery of the Curse of 13, his client and the other family members were all doomed to die one by one. But why would any one want to curse these people? How can the Curse be broken?
This book is a nice series-opener, the setting and the character design is refreshing, the 'murder mystery' is griping and well planned, the creepy atmosphere within the mansion where the young woman and her boyfriend's family live is masterfully crafted, the ending is a little bit weak, but it is still an entertaining read.

沒想到靈異的事件也能寫成本格推理，簡直眼前一亮。節奏頗明快，很不錯的推理小品。
