Adam Goodfellow and Nicole Golding run a stable in the Cotswolds and specialise in curing problem horses. It's never an easy task, and often requires changing the habits of the owner as much as the horse. The pair have travelled a long way to get where they are today - but they've been united by a common passion. After a chance meeting with Monty Roberts, they gave up everything to live out their dreams and show that it's possible for ordinary people to become 'horse whisperers'. Their world is extraordinary, particularly through their unusual methods of teaching, and as you meet the cast of characters, both animals and humans, that surround them, you'll find it impossible not to be won over by their life.

I remember when Monty Roberts burst onto the scene - I was a young teenager, fed up with the yard where I was riding and on the verge of giving it up altogether. But his books, demos and TV appearances made me realise that there was a different way of doing things and, even if I couldn't get behind everything he did, it gave me the confidence to find alternative ways to address problems our equine friends like to throw at us.

This book, written by two of his students who have gone on to run their own business based around those methods, is a lovely read. Nicole and Adam lead a lovely life, playing with ponies and helping them over traumas caused by previous handlers. The stories they have chosen to include here are somewhat inspirational - they go back again and again to rethink things through until they find a solution to help a particular pony.

This is their biography though - they don't expound a lot on Monty's methods, so you need to go away and read around it to find out more - but that's no great chore and probably a good thing. But it is a lovely story about two people giving up the rat race to do something they enjoy - something that a lot of us would love to be able to do.

Well worth reading.

Whispering Back is a non-fiction book by Nicole Golding that I read right when it came out 10 years ago. I loaned it to a friend when she mentioned “What is Horse Whispering?” I probably have more than 50 horse books that I use.

When I first saw this cover, I thought, hmm, I don’t use bridles like is pictured. Picky, picky…., but I read it again.

This is a good collection of horses and trainers having unique ways to solve the same issues that occur during training. I liked the authors collection a lot.

If you are into horses, this book would be a great read.

Another nifty way to answer the question above is easily see it done on YouTube at Honza Blaha - Open borders .

Whispering Back is a non fiction book on horse training, broken up into many chapters. They each tell the tale of a horse that the authors and horse trainers – Adam Goodfellow and Nicole Golding – have worked with.

What I found unusual about this book – and love! – is that Adam came to horses on account of Nicole at a later age in life than many... more at http://equus-blog.com/whispering-back/
