Solemn Duty is the eleventh book in the Survivalist series. Fleeing an army of the infected, Deputy Marshal Mason Raines is forced to enter an area overrun with lawlessness. When his ex-lover is kidnapped, he must negotiate her release with a brutal warlord set on expanding his empire. Coerced to do his bidding, Mason is recruited to hijack a secret convoy running between the newly-established colonies. After discovering it contents, however, he must decide between the life of someone he loves and those of the pandemic’s last survivors.
Meanwhile, Tanner and Samantha continue their pursuit of the gold stolen from Fort Knox. When they discover the train used to carry it away, they also encounter a small community plagued by grotesque body-snatching mutants. To recover the gold, they must undertake a dangerous quest to rid the area of the hideous monsters. But as the journey takes them into an abandoned missile silo, they make a discovery far worse than any they could ever have imagined.
After taking her revenge, Issa awaits Tanner’s return to Mount Weather. When a young widow is brutally murdered, she must uncover not only her killers but also their reasons behind it. Discovering that the killing was a precursor to something much larger, Issa must choose between the safety of her unborn child and that of the community’s beloved matron.
Events have made me who I am, neither a hardcore survivalist nor an all-trusting soul. I am a Boy Scout in the truest sense of the word—dedicated to family, country, and good citizenship. As you may already know, an enabling element of those ideals is being prepared.
It took the horrific events of 9/11 to wake me from my routine complacency. In one single moment, I came to realize that our world is not as safe as we would all like to believe. We have no guarantee of safety in this world. Disasters occur on an almost daily basis all around the globe. Major events in recent years have included the devastating tsunamis striking Japan and the coast of Sumatra, the rash of tornadoes that swept across the U.S. in 2011, Hurricane Katrina, the deadly earthquake in Haiti, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to name just a few.
I believe with all my heart that we have a duty to prepare our families for the dangers they face. I started my preparation by reading nearly every disaster preparedness book currently available. If you check Amazon, you will see that I am the #1 reviewer for many of these books. Even with all the material out there, I could not find a single book that offered a complete, well-reasoned approach to practical preparedness. As a NASA engineer, I took up the challenge by conducting very careful research – disecting fact from folklore. Three years and many thousands of dollars later, I have finally released a handbook that offers well-researched advice that can be put into practice in the real world by normal families.
I wrote this handbook for my own family, but I would be honored to share it with yours. If you are not fully satisfied with the Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family, send it back, and I’ll refund your money, no questions asked.
This book continues immediately after the previous one with Mason Raines trying to escape with the infected hot on his heels while Sam and Tanner are discovering even stranger mutations in their hunt for the gold that was taken from Fort Knox.
There is as always, lots of action, challenges and double crossing in this book and more than a few things come to a head with violent deaths a plenty.
The story continues to be interesting and worth reading, a few tips and tricks are sprinkled throughout the book and the story is certainly heading for its final climax with many of the stories threads being tied off, though there are still a few to finish.
As with the rest of the series, as soon as I got my hands on this book, I could not put it down. Extremely well written, with great characters, amazing plot twists and valuable information - including "recipes" that were fascinating. I thoroughly enjoy these books and while I am eager to read #12 (the final book in the series), I will be re-reading the previous ones, as the characters and scenarios are well worth re-visiting. Two thumbs up for this one!
.....finished all eleven books 📚of this series (all in a row)!!!! Loved every one of them!!!! It amazes me at how this author kept every book just as interesting as the one before! PLENTY OF ACTION!!!! Outstanding story line AND characters!!! Can't wait for book 12 and beyond!!!!
These books are a lot of fun and it's interesting to see how the author continues to flesh out his world and charchters. Unlike past books this one did not have as many survival tips and the like but it worked out just fine. Looking forward to book 12.
Always hard to put down. Great reading and the characters become real. I am waiting and excited to read the next book. Like I said the characters are great. And mostly believable.
Well written book and a great story in a great series. Father and Son each trying to make a difference in a world gone crazy. I encourage every one to read this series and you will find a well written story line that will keep you interested from the first to hopefully more stories to come.
Had Alexa read to me during road trip. This one had “zombie” creatures, beyond the infected in earlier books. If you’re still hanging in at Book 11, the series is still good, but showing its age. Sam is the funniest.

Recommend this entire series for an exciting read that is hard to put down. Albeit a little far fetched but it is just a fun non fiction series, whose main character reminds me of the main character of Justified.
As always, this book did not disappoint. I finished the book in a couple evenings. Never a dull moment. Look forward #12 but not the end of the series.
I really enjoyed this series. Adventure, humor, heroic figures, this series has it all. It’s also thought provoking in its examination of human behavior. A bit more gore than I’m used to but seemed appropriate for the topic.
