Struggling with inner demons after the loss of his child, Retired Air Force Colonel Brett Stafford is in search of missing pieces in his life when he is involved in a single-car accident and slips into a coma for six months. Using his newfound—and unrefined—ability to heal, Brennen Reynolds attempts to revive the colonel on the day his life support is to be terminated. Brennen is only partially successful, as the person awoken is not Colonel Stafford. This colonel is dangerous. Brutal killings occur when the new entity escapes from a New England rehabilitation center and vanishes into the waking world. Pressured by time, Brennen and his friends must try to piece together what went wrong and how to reverse the process before further tragedies occur and the colonel loses himself forever.
N. Lawrence Mann, Author of "Coma Dreams" has written a suspenseful, intriguing, intense, frightening, unusual, psychological thriller. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Para-Normal Thriller, Sci-Fi, Psychological Thriller with a Subgenre of "Addiction Fiction". The drug "GLOW" is symbolic for many things. The author describes his quirky, dysfunctional characters as complicated and complex.
This is the second book in the series and I really feel that I was at somewhat of a disadvantage not reading the first book. That is just my opinion. Can you imagine someone having a certain non-medical ability to bring a loved one out of a coma? I am sure that that is unreasonable but many people would appreciate if that could happen.
In this story, a HUGE mistake, TRAGIC mistake, occurs, when Brennen Reynold tries to awaken Air Force Colonel Brett Strattford from a coma. Colonel Brett Strattford is in a coma after an automobile accident. His last thoughts while driving were that he regretted many things that he had done in his life. Unfortunately in Brennen Reynold's attempts to revive the Colonel from his coma, it is not the Colonel that is woken. It is someone who looks like the Colonel, and is the Colonel's body, but is far more dangerous than one can imagine.
Brennen Reynold and his very strange friends try to piece what has gone wrong, and how killings and murders can be stopped. There are very strange occurrences in this story. There is a touch of Science Fiction seen in this story, a cat that types what it thinks, since it has trouble talking, and very strange dreams that appear to be real and dangerous, and happenings in another dimension. I would recommend this novel for those readers who appreciate an unusual combination of suspenseful and thrilling genres.
Mann's follow up to Full Breach continues to explore the limits of the human mind and where our consciousness touches the other side. Both scifi and thriller fans will enjoy this suspenseful read that had me turning pages as fast as I could!
Coma Dreams is an action-packed paranormal thriller I will be recommending for a long time. The way Mann plays with dreams, friendship and trauma transcend the book and really make you think, and his depiction of a raw story immediately drew me into the narrative and the characters stayed with me even after I closed the book.
Suspenseful Sci-fi! Wow! What a combination. This well-written story is quite thought provoking. I did not initially realize this is a part of a 3-part series. Since I have always appreciated books involving our human mind, I look forward to the third edition.
This book was a wonderful read! It mixes science fiction and suspense with underlying themes of friendship, trauma and addiction. I'm looking forward to the third edition in the series!
Thank you JKS for the advanced copy of this book - all opinions are my own.
I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed this particular read - sometimes the sci-fi/paranormal type reads don't really click with me as a reader, but this was not the case with Coma Dreams. I found myself completely absorbed in the story, which is a very unique twist on a standard suspense novel.
While this is the second book in a three book series, you don't necessarily need to have read the first book to understand what is happening in this book, which I genuinely appreciate in a series. While I didn't NEED to know what happened in the first book, after this book I am curious enough to have ordered the first book just so I can find out.
The thing that I enjoyed the most about this book, was how it incorporated the realities of trauma and addiction into an action packed plot, making it feel like an overall more human story. I always fear in a book that has a sci-fi angle that you will lose the humanity, but Mann does not succumb to that at all.
Overall this book ended up being a page turner that was near impossible to set down once I got started. I'm looking forward to seeing how book one plays out, and then what comes down the line in book three. Certainly one you should pick up if you are looking for something a little different and a lot interesting.
*I received a free copy of this book for my honest review*
This book was a very interesting read. I thought the writing was done well, and the story kept me turning pages. The story was unique which I loved. It wasn't something I've read a hundred times fifty different ways. You have prospective from several different characters, while normally starts to feel daunting or confusing, fit this story nicely. There wasn't anything I really did not like about the book. It was a page turner for me. I would recommend reading it. I do wish I would've known before hand that this was the 2nd book to a series but I had no clue in reading the book. It was written well enough that I easily picked up the 2nd book and read without confusion or feeling like I was missing major background info. A definite plus!!
Brett Stafford had some pretty terrible experiences in his past like the loss of his child and a terrible coma disrupting his ongoing life for more than six months. All of a sudden is able to heal and not the man he was anymore and his friends (Brennnen Reynolds) nee to work together to save Brett.
Sounds interesting? It is. If you get comfortable with the fact that your friend all suddenly has superpowers and becomes weird after coma you will find a plot filled with tension and also a suprise!
I’m so happy to have come across the Blue Warp series. I enjoyed the characters and their intriguing relationships. The author really nailed the imagery for each one. Their experiences were captivating throughout the powerful narrative and crafty storyline, including innocence, curiosity, and the sublime. I appreciated the author’s creativity, detailed focus, and dry wit humor too.
For the first half of this book I felt that the pace was quite slow but at about half way through til the end it had me on the edge of my seat wondering how it would end. I really enjoyed the scientific nature of the story as well as the suspense build up of it. I would recommend this to others.
As a sequel to Full Breach, N. Lawrence Mann's Coma Dreams serves as a thought-provoking story of how our past trauma can resurface in our lives. Mann has given readers a marvelous body of work that delves into the world of trauma and addiction. From Reynolds being addicted to the drug Glow to Colonel Brett Stafford awakening from his coma as a different person, everyone will enjoy the deep, vivid story world Mann has created.
A book like this is hard to pass up. Coma Dreams is a wonderful literary piece that mixes science fiction and suspense to create a touching, compelling story. I loved how the author incorporated real-life scenarios into the story. Addiction and trauma affect more than just the individual. Reading how Stafford's wife and son cared for him after his accident made the story authentic. Mann's work deserves more praise, and I am excited to see what will come in the future.
