I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.
I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.
No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.
We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.
Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
Legal thriller and space opera didn’t mesh for me in this installment. The legal speak just dragged the story for me but apparently others love it since the TH got stopped. Such is THG universe.
I sooo want to share some funny bits, but that would be a spoiler. So just let me say that fans are going to have a huge laugh.
Another well-written story with heaps of ass-kicking and laughs to go with it. New enemies, new friends, and character development with a few surprises. All the good stuff we've come to expect of the books in the Kurtherian Universe.
I love how the authors ask fans for suggestions, then include them with acknowledgments. I was soooo excited to see that the names I suggested were included (I'm Veronica Helen). It's a real thrill. Thanks, Craig!
Rivka is an interesting combination -- a lawyer who gets shot up repeatedly, and a killer who really worries about whether or not to kill. Not invincible, but very, very lucky. These stories fit very well with the whole Empire to Federation transition. Unlike some of the other spin-off series from the Kurtherian Universe each of these books comes to a satisfactory ending while still leaving a lot of material for sequels.
Rivka the Magistrate is going to be a really good series
Rivka who is a "judge, jury and executioner" all rolled into one small package who packs a huge a wallop along with her body guard Red in their quest bring justice to the Federation. Rivka's crew is slowly building up with people/critters who also want to help the Federation. I'm waiting impatiently for Book 3 to come out.
Rivka is a talented Magistrate who inspires loyalty among her crew. She has a phenomenal memory and the power to tell if a suspect is telling the truth. I like the action, humor, and romance. The characters that make up her crew, are compelling. I like the crossover with other series. I look forward to the next book.
I really enjoy these Judge, Jury and Executioner books. The characters are well written and the storylines are great. I wasn't sure I would enjoy a series about lawyers, but these guys kickass. I also very much enjoy the crew and how they end up on board as part of the gang. I am really looking forward to the next book.
A really fast paced story. Love the Magistrates! The rounding out of the crew is very good and I can't wait to see how the embellishments have affected them. The fifth member is the real surprise. Now to hope they get to working on book 3!!
Rivka, the Magistrate is back bigtime. She gains yet another cremated or two. They're all interesting characters too. She's chasing corporate criminal enterprises and hits the jackpot! Great plot, good dialogue, wonderful characters. Living this series...and the snark! Superb!
A similar theme in the KU. One heck of a female lead with an interesting supporting cast. Hopefully the next books in the series will add more background on all of the crew. It would also be great to see some of the other single ship teams pop up in like COL TH did, as well as Rivka doing the same with the other groups.
Yay book 2 of this fun book can’t wait to read her next case(mission) you all know what that right. Love bringing in a little Bad Company to the tale. So read this and enjoy you have been judged a fan.
Wow! Rivka and her crew were certainly put through the meat grinder in this story!
As usual with a Craig Martelle book, it was fast paced, filled with plot after plot, and the fight scenes were excellent!
I really love the team that has come together now, as they all complement each other, but I'm especially happy that Anhk has joined them! He is such a unintentionally funny character, and I love his emotionless rejoinders, too!
This plot was so very intricate, and I loved the points of Law that Rivka used, in order to put her case together, though the math used went right over my head!
But I also loved that TH and the gang were made a part of the story, too! It was soooo neat to have two stories linked up together, so that I had double the pleasure in my reading.
Now, talking of reading, I've checked my reading list, and I will be starting yet another new series again. This time, it's the military space opera series, Super dreadnoughts, and I'll bee starting off with book one of the series - simply named Super dreadnought 1!
I really hope I'll enjoy this series, and am hoping that it'll be something like David Weber's Bolo books - or at least similar to them.
Whatever it turns out like, I'll be letting you know about it in my next review!
Female MC Rivka is the ultimate Magistrate in the Kurtherian Universe story by the Champions of Space Opera Thrillers, Craig Martelle and Michael Anderle. Like the Mounties, she always gets her man, and leaves no stone unturned to catch wrongdoers, apply the Law and making fair judgements of each case on its merits, deals out justice and carries out appropriate sentences too on behalf of Terry Henry Walton and Char's Bad Company and the Federation. Ever fearless of traps and subterfuge by the criminals Rivka will always apply justice without fear or favour in this all-action, legal thriller adventure that's another 5-star winner for Craig Martelle and Michael Anderle. Fly to the nearest bookstore and get your copy today - satisfaction is guaranteed!
As judge, jury, and the scythe of justice, Rivka gets to investigate, research, and impose sentences in her assigned cases. It is all hands on as she gates about the galaxy in her corvette. The hands on literally allows her to see the truth. Unique cases with actual legal premises - from murder to RICO violations. Her quirky humor is only surpassed by her quirky crew collected in these first two books to include an AI, a pair of body guards in love, a teenage delinquent, an alien, and a cat. Lots of action, interesting cases, and amusing; combining two of my favorite things - the law and science fiction.
I can't do a half star, so in Goodreads I gave it only 4 because it needs a bit of editing. (5 or more and it bothers me.) Still, I am really looking forward to reading the rest of this series. While I have read and liked Free Traders, I haven't read the series related to this universe but expect I will soon. The combination of these two authors' imaginations and story-telling skills shine in this series.
I really liked the first book of this series, it was such a unique character and story along with being very well written. But this one new me away! I made the mistake of starting it in the evening and here I am attaching 5am having just finished it. I couldn't put it down, not even long enough to cook dinner! Instead I grabbed a sandwich and read until the end. There was lots of edge of your seat action and humor. I especially loved the comment about Red reading the latest Kurtherian Gambit book! 😄 Seems Red also spent quite a bit of time running around in his boxers. LOL I am looking forward to reading more of this crews adventures. Craig and Michael, please consider this my firm YES vote for more of this series.
Occasionally, you can get slightly confused as to who is talking, but it is not poor writing, but rather the author's writing style. There is no doubt the characters are very likeable, and the plotline is fast and furious. There is never a dull moment on their ship. Unlike the first novel, the actual collection of evidence is almost too fast paced. We the reader, is basically told, "yep, we've got the evidence", without ever being told what that evidence was. I get it, Martelle isn't trying to be David Weber and burying us with details. This is an action adventure book of a couple hundred pages, but if she is going to be "the Jury", I want to see what evidence she has. I recommend this book, but make sure you read them in order.
I love these stories! I love these characters, I simply cannot get enough Rivka, Red and all the crew! I love the new people, I especially love the idea of Red finding love! She's just perfectly perfect for him! The only problem I have with these stories is there are not enough of them yet! I go crazy waiting on the next one to come out! I actually read almost all the Kurtherian Gambit series and love them, but every now and then, one of the off shoots of the original series comes out and the characters grab my heart and take off with it! This is one of those l am crazy about, so please, please, please, more soon!
I'm really getting to like this series a lot. It reminds me of a mix of the standard old-time western with a space opera. The characters are all over-the-top, the action wild and the idea of one person being judge, jury and executioner when that person is dealing with really, really evil people is neat.
This one even includes a marauding space ship that makes random attacks, gambling, new people on board, Rivka's ship finally gets a name, and what may be a suicidal mission on the part of Rivka and her people against a fleet of evil-doers and their spaceships.
It's a whole lot of fun and I think it would make a neat science fiction series.
Rivka’s adventures in the two books that I read are too stupid!
I started reading J.R.R Tolkien, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Ursula K. Le Guin, Arthur C. Clarke and many others in my 70 years. Anne McCaffrey is by far my favorite author. The characters in her books are people that I wanted to meet. To hear more about in the next books.
These authors Craig Martelle, Michael Anderle are terrible! In my opinion! I was not happy with the first book "You Have Been Judged", but I figured I should try the second book to judge these authors. Well "Destroy The Corrupt" was even worse. So it took me two tries to figure out the I wasted my time reading the first book.
Sadly, this book did not live up to the promise of its predecessor. Throughout the story, I felt like the heroine was running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to stay half a step ahead of the enemy while she was really 5 steps behind. the final confrontation felt a bit forced and imo detracted from the overall effect of the story like it was just there to give the rescuers a reason to put in an appearance.
By the end of the book I was left wondering, who the *^%& the heroine actually works for; Bad Company, the FDG, or The Government.
Another entry in the Kurtherian Gambit universe! What more do I need to say? I love how all the books/series in the KG Universe tend to have characters from other branches appearing, as well as references to the entire KG Universe itself: one character in this refers to reading the "Kurtherian Gambit series" with what he claims are "9000 books" or so. We can only hope! Every book I've read in the KG Universe has been fun and well-written. Who doesn't like a kick-a## heroine with a sense of humor and almost super powers?
Because the protagonist is a lawyer don’t let that fool you, plenty of action.
This is another book that I enjoyed very much. It has all the earmarks of a TKGU book that I enjoy. Characters getting Nano sites, plenty of humor, plenty of action and character growth. I know there are five books in the series but I will continue to read them as long as the author continues to write them.
Well Rivka is definitely getting the interesting cases!! We have the same levels of action, detail and adventure...with a few more friends both old and new...and the need to root out hidden corruption in accordance with the law... As usual things don't go according to plan...but that definitely makes for an interesting adventure.... Keep them coming Craig!!!
I am seriously loving this series. I can pretty much duplicate what I said in review of Book One. Distinctive plot, entertaining characters, good editing and a multitude of the little things done right.
I will be antsy until the next book is in my hands.
You can keep writing with Michael. I've read almost all of his books that have been written with all the other authors ,you are the best. I'm a military brat and wife, these people are loud and in charge and all curse. Nice sweet and polite they do take names and do there thing.
Uh oh. The protagonists finally figured out they're more Judge Dredd than Judge Judy, protestations of innocence notwithstanding. Another rollicking read about someone convinced she can do good without blowing everything up, who fails miserably at that part of her self described...ER, job description.
This is book two of this series, and like all series should be read in order, but I think this one could have been ok as a standalone, you would just have to figure out who everyone is. I highly recommend this series to anyone that enjoys sci-fi also anyone that likes legal thrillers. I'm going to get the third one now and start on it.
Another good read from Martelle and im enjoying the character development of the crew although some seem a little bit forced. Good to see the tie into the regular Kutherian characters as this helps especially with 9 thousand Kutherian books lol. Looking forward to book 3
I really love Rivka & Red and I was extremely happy that Craig decided to write this sequel. I also really enjoy the new crew members. As a huge Bethany Ann fan, it’s fun to read stories with another fighting female with special powers. I’m excited to read the next book.
Two thirds in and I realize I just do not care, so I quit.
Main character is ill prepared for the job. Does not think, plan or prepare in any way. Goes forward bluffing everyone and using a simple cheat move to gain information. This is not fun, believable or entertaining. This series is a failure.
Absolutely loving Rivka, Red, Jay,Lindy and Ankkh together fighting for the law and justice. Rivka bites off more than she can chew when given her next case and we see the appearance of our favourite Colonel to help her out. I think we all need a little Rivka in our lives! Now into book 3.
