Moonlight and Mistletoe

Rate this book
Plush, green pasture grasses stretch out forever before the beauty of rugged, majestic mountains on the horizon, and moonlit skies are scattered over with glimmering stars: Adelaide Plume’s Colorado cattle ranch home is akin to heaven itself. Paired with the blessings of a loving family and a cherished, bosom friend, Adelaide’s life is bright, secure, and filled with satisfied happiness. Moreover, her father’s recent hire of handsome cowboy, Chance Flannery lends an entirely new exhilaration to Adelaide’s already picturesque existence.

And yet Chance’s arrival at the ranch sends Adelaide longing to cast off the appearance of childhood and be seen instead as a refined young woman. The fact that her bullying older brother insists on executing a series of humiliating pranks upon her serves only to frustrate Adelaide further. For how will Chance Flannery ever see her as anything more than a clumsy, tousled schoolgirl when he is forever finding her in awkward circumstances?

Still, the town’s traditional festivities to be held for Christmas offer Adelaide hope—hope that a transformation of appearance might alter Chance Flannery’s perception of her, hope that she will at last be seen as a woman and no longer a child.

Nonetheless, an unseen, menacing threat begins to creep into the life Adelaide holds so dear. When all she loves is imperiled, will she stumble into harm’s way, just as she always has at the hand of her impish brother? Or will Adelaide become the woman she desires to be and find a strength that even she never knew she possessed?

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Marcia Lynn McClure grew up influenced by the reminiscent stories of rugged, rural Colorado farm life fascinatingly recounted to her by her parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts…tales of runaway buckboards, mule-drawn plows and dust pneumonia; verbalized images of stream-flooded meadows, frozen over in winter, where a child could peer through the crystal clear ice in wonder at the small fish, snakes and mice sealed in the meadow grasses beneath; stories of hardship and tragedy, love and loss. But always the stories, and the people telling them, bore evidence of the wonder and worthiness of simpler, yet sometimes brutal, times.

These influential people and the family legends they detailed, coupled with her own life experiences and utterly romantic nature, led Marcia to begin writing novels as Christmas gifts for her closest friends…friends who long for a breath of the past and miss the romance of bygone eras; friends searching for moments of distraction from the stressful, demanding times we live in.

And so, knowing that it is the breath of the past and the "take me in you arms and kiss me" kind of moments that so many women long to relive, Marcia spins her tales of love, life and laughter…adventures woven around those compelling, romantic instances that most appeal to a woman's loving heart. Marcia feels that if her readers close one of her books with a contented sigh and a delighted smile, feeling rejuvenated, cheerful and edified, then she has achieved what she set out to do…shower refreshment and happiness on anyone having experienced the story.

Marcia lives in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. There she writes her stories surrounded by her beloved friends and family...and the beautiful desert landscape of New Mexico!

I just have to say that I'm definitely in the minority on this one.

This book really didn't focus on Adelaide and Chance all that much. I found myself wanting more of these two and less of everything else. All the repetition and unnecessary information made this a boring book for me and I found myself skimming a lot.

The side romance of Adelaide's best friend, Janie, and Adelaide's dad, Dean, had me cringing. Long story short, Janie had been in love with Adelaide's older brother Harvey for years. After kissing Harvey and then Dean on the same night, Janie's feelings instantly switched to Dean. She's 17 and he's like 45. That's a definite hard pass for me.

Sadly, I wouldn't recommend this book, which is sad because I used to really enjoy Ms. McClure's books.

A beautiful love story of Adelaide and Chance with a trouble making brother involved. Marcia Lynn McClure never fails in the details of her stories. You'll never look at mistletoe the same

This is a very fast light hearted book. I liked the story especially Roger. I liked how Adelaide learned that it okay to be yourself and people are going to like you for you.
I did feel like the romance was very quick. Like they were building up to it and then all of a sudden they were planning to get married, i wish there could have been more time with them together.
I enjoyed reading the author's notes I really like how they give you a view of how the book came about and also the little tidbits of history are always very interesting. I can't wait to try the sugar cookies recipe in the author notes.
Overall pretty good story.

Oh man!! Another Marcia Lynn McClure book I couldn't put down. I went to bed late last night wanting to finish it but alas I finished the two chapters and epilogue this morning. Adelaide's brother did make me mad with his schemes but I think that was the point. I'm a big sucker for western books and this book pulled me in good!!

I love this sweet, fast double-love story. I love the brogue and how he speaks it and she adopts it. The other love story is sweet too, unorthodox but sweet. I have a relative that there is 25 year difference so that doesn't bother me. I just love the love story and I am thankful that her skunk of a brother Harvey grows up a little toward the end.

I needed a break from social stats and grabbing this book was what I did. I really enjoyed reading this book again. I forgot about the rogue in the book. It was really fun and exciting. I really loved the mistletoe the Christmas thing. I also loved that she could hold her own.

Other years
I love Marcia McClure and this book is no exception. Sweet, Yummy, and a sexy accent to boot. This was a fast, wild, love story, and I loved it.

I love their love story. It's sweet and fun and I love the Irish brogue

Ok. I usually love Marcia’s cowboy leading men. But I just wasn’t into this cowboy or story. Not my favorite.
But there were somethings I really liked about the book. I liked Roger. I liked how Adelaide would read to him. I liked Jaine and Dean Plume. I found I liked their story.
And I thought all that mistletoe was pretty great.
It was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and it went quickly.

Reminiscent & reminiscing

This is a reliably sweet read revisiting MLM's classical western style. It's a ten chapter novella, so it's relatively brief; but the plot is fairly simple, so it ends up being a bit repetitive. It worked as a nice bit of nostalgia, though, and makes me want to go back & reread some of my old favorites

*Romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

Be who you are

I liked that the girl in the story could be herself, and never really felt like she had to change who she was. But it also wasn’t one of my favorite stories Marcia has written, but that’s why there’s lots of her books to read so everyone can have a favorite.

This book was so much fun! It had me laughing and gasping out loud at some of the fun antics that went on. Marcia truly has a way of writing that just puts you in a good mood! Loved Chance’s Irish accent, made me think of another “Irish” character of hers ;)

This starts out cute, with a fun setting and I liked Adelaide and Chance. I admit, I skimmed quite a bit with this one. Just felt like a lot of info-dumping and I'd rather have more interactions with Adelaide and Chance to further the story.

I was also turned off by the side story of her best friend Janie dating her much older father. He's at least 25+ years older than Janie and its just not my thing. Even for the time period, I think its a stretch. Maybe it was because Janie just came across really young and naive, or maybe its because Janie had been in love crushing on Adelaides brother for years and years and then suddenly switches to the dad in one night? I didn't feel a romantic connection between them personally, much more a father or adult relationship with a young girl. He is an authority figure, her best friends father, so it just came across icky.

I just wish the story had focused on Adelaide and Chance. This one was a miss for me.

fun cowboy tale

Love and cattle ranches are the beginning and the end of the story.
Irish emigrants enjoy the work and worry of the day in and day out of a cattle ranch.
