The perfect pants are hard to find for someone shaped like me. Could Octopants be just the job? Why not dive in and see . . .? There are all-in-ones for urchins and slipper-socks for eels... but will Octopus ever find a pair of pants to fit? A hilarious rhyming romp, packed with underwater underwear!
Suzy Senior lives and works at the top of a huge hill in Yorkshire. She lives with her husband, two lovely children, two guinea pigs, a hamster, some fish, a grumpy kestrel, twelve whippets and a family of cheeky ferrets.
She has worked in publishing for what seems like ages, and still really loves it. In her spare time she likes to write books for children, but usually has to clean out the guinea pigs instead.*
*That's all true, except for the bit about the ferrets, the kestrel and the whippets. To be honest, it's mainly just fish and guinea pigs. But that's plenty, really.
Octopants is an amusing children’s book that is all about an Octopus trying to buy some pants (underwear) as he is naked down there. He has tried every store that he knows and he can’t find any to fit him, he just has too many legs.
The story is told in a rhyming style and is adorned with colourful, vibrant, and fun illustrations. We all know that an Octopus doesn’t have legs it has tentacles, but for the amusement of the reader, which is little children, this is what they have been called – at the beginning.
I loved this book. It actually made me giggle. It is silly, daft, and a whole lot of fun. There is so much more to the book than the story. If you check out the illustrations you will see lots of humorous moments too, such as the names of the book or fish in the background shopping.
The story is truly wonderful and we all need something to amuse us now and again and this will do the trick for children as well as provide them with an adorable story that is both heartwarming and sweet.
Octopants follows a young octopus searching for pants to fit its many appendages. Everyone else has cool pants (and underpants!) – Plus, it’s a little embarrassing to be wearing nothing! Trips to the Clam Closet and Bargain Bucket turn up nothing to fit Octopus. Until, at the Under-Sea Emporium, Octopus has an epiphany: Every animal has its own needs – There’s no one-style-fits-all. And – they aren’t eight legs, they’re arms! Octopus finds joy in a sporty striped sweater.
Powell’s illustrations are bright and emotionally expressive, with each kind of fish and undersea creature looking specifically like itself. Young ocean enthusiasts will recognize zebra fish, puffer fish, sea jellies, green sea turtles, and more.
Senior’s rhyming text works well read aloud. The language doesn’t feel forced. Plus, kids will get to say “underpants” a lot! I was pleased to see that neither the octopus nor its friends and helpers are identified as male or female, allowing readers freedom of interpretation.
For kids who like clothes or the oceans, teachers and librarians preparing story times about individuality and self-acceptance.
In this story told in rhyming text, a poor old octopus is embarrassed to have no underwear. He's tried everything, but no one has the pants he needs. Eventually, he stumbles on a shop that has all sorts of great things to offer to its customers. As it turns out, it isn't undergarments that he has needed all along, but something else entirely. The vibrant illustrations have kid-appeal even though they're not necessarily my sort of thing. I really liked the endpapers with all of those fish heading somewhere on the first one and then carrying shopping bags on the last one. They're adorable, and while it's silly to imagine fish or an octopus, for that matter, going shopping, it was still fun to think about what it might be like.
Octopants is a delightful rhyming storybook about an octopus who is in search of pants. Every other creature under the sea has pants, but the poor Octopus can't find any to fit his 8 limbs. The Under-Sea Emporium promises to have clothes for everyone, will he find item he needs?
Illustrated by Claire Powell, Octopants is gorgeous to look at. The pictures are bright, warm, and summery as it brings an imaginative underwater world to life. The front cover is actually foiled and has a beautiful shine to really catch your eyes. The text by Suzy Senior is charming and fun. A great addition to any beginner library that should bring a smile to your face while serving as a reminder to keep perspective.
The octopus laments his lack of underwear and tells how he has tried to purchase some but hasn't been able to find any. One day he finds a store that seems to have something for everyone. The owner helps him realize he doesn't need under wear-he doesn't have eight legs. He needs a shirt for his eight arms! Silly, but the adult part of me is like 'really?' You have to go with the idea that pants and underwear are to cover your legs, not your bottom, and shirts are to cover your arms, not your torso. Then it kinda makes sense-but still.
A young octopus searches the seven seas and more to find some underwear for himself, until he realizes he doesn't have 8 legs - he has 8 arms.
Senior's rhyming text is fun to read, it rolls along its rollicking way. Youngsters will feel the frustration he feels until he finds just the right piece of clothing for him. Claire Powell's sunny digital illustrations are bright and cheery, very colorful and just right for this undersea adventure.
Use with storytimes about oceans, clothing, and problem solving.
Imagined pitch to the publisher: "So, it's about an octopus who needs a pair of pants but can't find any that fit their 8 arms." 🤔
I know that logic quite often flies out the window when it comes to children's picture books but this was one I couldn't get on board with. In the world of this book all undersea creatures wear pants (which are some kind of swim nappy I presume). The rhyming was a bit clunky and there was no real point or message to the story.
But, as expected, this was enjoyed by my young child as toilet and underwear humour never go out of style at that age.
Poor Octopus somehow made it through many years of his life without discovering that he had no pants. Now that he's aware, he's terribly embarrassed and on the hunt for some octopants. But alas! No store carries them. What's an octopus to do? You'll have to read to find out!
This one had me and little man giggling as poor Octopus tries so many different pants, none of which are right for him.
The rhyming is a bit forced and maybe not the best call, but it's still a silly underwater tale of an octopus trying to find underwear. A cute "twist" at the end that saves the day. Overall, it still just felt like some magical it-factor was missing, and I think it was the rhyming text that made me hold back the 4-star rating
An octopus looks everywhere for a pair of underpants that will fit their many legs... errr... arms? There is a questionable thing in this book that might raise an adult reader's eyebrow: one of the underwear stores is called "Clam Closet." Maybe the illustrator knew they were being a bit naughty, and maybe they were innocent--it's an undersea theme after all! Hmm...
An octopus realizes he's naked! He needs underwear! But no matter where he shops, no one carries octopants... What's a guy to do? Super silly. Great for storytime. Use with octopus, underwear, or clothing themes.
A funny story about an octopus who doesn’t have any underpants. Sure to get lots of giggles in the classroom. A fun rhyming read. I would use this during whole class story time and have the book in the reading corner for the children to explore.

A solid 4-star book. Cute cover will catch alot of eyes. Story is pretty adorable (even though I'm terrified of octopus/squid/etc.) Ha! My daughter loved it.
Very cute and clever rhyming book. The octopus can't find any pants that have enough legs for him but soon discovers he was looking at everything all wrong!
The child I read this book is a fan of octopus so she enjoyed it. This is a silly tale about an octopus trying to find underpants to fit! It has nice illustrations.
