My Life Uploaded #2

My Life Gone Viral

Rate this book
For fans of Girl Online and Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging, Rae Earl's My Life Gone Viral (the sequel to My Life Uploaded) is a quirky, irresistible story that tackles the unpredictability, joy, and insecurity of life online.

Millie Porter finally has everything she wanted. But it doesn’t make her feel the way she thought it would...

The pressure of having to create a great vlog forces Millie to take risks that her usual sensible self would never take. And soon, everything starts changing before her eyes—she’s not getting along with her boyfriend, her former enemy suddenly wants to be her best friend, and she’s unwillingly involved in her mom’s dating life. Plus, the boy she thought was her totally, completely, non-romantic buddy is now feeling like anything but.

Can Millie balance it all? She is about to find out and share it all online.

I come from Stamford in Lincolnshire. It’s where a lot of TV and films are shot because it hasn’t changed much in 500 years. My childhood was like most people’s – a mixture of lovely and very odd. Lovely because I spent a lot of time with good friends, music and tadpoles. Odd because I spent a lot of time worrying about everything – like war, murderers and poisonous mushrooms (don’t ask). I was a bit weird. Like we all are.

After school I went to Hull University to study English Literature – which I LOVED. At that point the government actually still gave you money to study – so I GOT PAID to READ BOOKS for 3 years. I then worked in radio for 15 years. Firstly as the person who makes the adverts (all those annoying jingles that stay in your head for DAYS – that’s me!) Secondly as a breakfast presenter. I got to interview lots of famous boy bands and once nearly broke Cheryl Cole’s chair on stage. We don’t talk about that. I got in trouble. I’ve always written things but most of them were actually slightly rubbish. Or they were about people and I never wanted them to see it. I don’t think I was any good at writing till I was 35 and that was after a lot of practice.
I have a shed in my back garden I go to. It’s full of brilliant things – like a mini stable and horses, loads of stationery and a giant old railway station clock (slight ‘Dr.Who’ vibe). My first book ‘My Mad, Fat Diary’ was published a few years ago. Hattie is my third. My second is potentially the best book ever written since Shakespeare – but I can’t make it work so at the moment it’s just a bit rubbish. I haven’t given up hope though.

After accidentally going viral, Millie was left wondering if she was really willing to pay the price for online fame.

It was fun catching up with Millie. She was still vlogging with her cat, Dave, but so many other BIG changes were happening in her life. People were leaving her, left and right, while her agent was pushing her to be something that she wasn't. In the meantime, Millie was feeling the pressure to go viral, and it was all stoking her anxiety.

I was happy to see, that Millie was still delightful, and she was able to mend some of her relationships. I loved spending time with her mother, grandfather, aunt, and Lauren, and was very happy to see Bradley back in the picture in some capacity. She went through some growing pains with some of the people in her life, but learned a lot about herself and the things that really mattered to her.

I enjoy reading books about life online, because it's such a big part of the world we live in. I liked the way Earl approached the topic with humor, while also bringing in other themes, such as family, friendship, second chances, and being true to yourself.

Overall, I had a fun time with Millie and her gang, and it was great to see that she was still charming and unabashedly Millie, Dave was still catastic, and all the ensuing antics still amused me.

I enjoyed this middle grade book. What killed it for me were the constant allowances made for Millie’s sexist grandfather by saying “well he’s from a different time”. No no. Tell him what’s up, stop allowing people “from a different time” to stay there. We aren’t in that time anymore. Don’t act like that and don’t make allowances for it either.
