Perfect for middle school aged kids, this allegory tells truths about the great controversy between good & evil & God’s love for his children in ways that are entertaining & meaningful. My 10 & 12 year old boys loved it just like I did at their age. Chapters are 3-4 pages long.

[3.25] It did a better job than I expected at building up a world when the book is so short. This does work as a standalone except for the ending. I feel like the ending was a bit too quick and a few things feel unresolved or resolved too quickly. I wish there was a second book to help with that. I also kind of wish this book was dual pov and had a storyline from Alinor's perspective. I wanted to know more about her.

I first read this book when it was published in a small magazine for middle school kids. It was painful like watching your favorite tv show and getting hooked in each episode only to have to wait till next week to know more.
I loved this book and when I finished it that first time I started looking everywhere to buy it. (My family went camping a lot on the weekends so despite my best efforts, I missed getting m copy once or twice.)
Eventually, I found it and the sequel "The quest of Ellinor Dagworth". Now with the Internet to help you should be able to find it alot easier, but if you have a middleschooler I suggest you set out on your adventure to find your copy.

Yup. I read a children's book. Fight me. Actually, aside from the writer's seeming hatred for period accuracy, the book is a solid read if you're looking for a YA medieval adventure story with some philosophical themes. From a faith-oriented publisher, but any religious themes are deeply buried in the text.
Don't read it if you can't picture someone in medieval times saying the word "backpack" a lot.

I must have read this book 30+ times. It's one of the first books I ever read, and I have read it over and over again.
