No Moon at Midnight

Rate this book
MULTILE-AWARDS-WINNING AUTHOR For Lord Byron, Teresa Guiccioli is not his only love; he also loves Italy, and cares for the Italian people who are now under the crushing rule of Austria. Can he fight the Austrians with scathing poetry, or join the secret Italian organisation of the 'Carbonari' who are preparing to take back their country with war?
Yet it is while he is in Italy that his own nation of Britain makes a huge political request of him – insisting he is the only man who can do it – and so once again he dons the red military uniform of a commissioned British officer and leaves Italy for Greece, knowing that the hardest stage of his journey still stretches ahead. Will Teresa wait for him?
" If I am a poet, Greece made me one. It was there I wrote my first successful poem, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage."
" There was a helplessness about Byron, a sort of abandonment of himself to his "destiny" as he called it. He believed in Fate, and when Fate spoke to him clearly, he always answered the call. " ––– Quinnell.

Sad end to an engrossing series!

I am so very thankful to the author, Gretta Curran Browne, for her very human portrayal of this magnanimous gentleman, Lord Byron.

The finale to this extraordinarily insightful book on the life and works of Lord Byron includes letters, quotations and poetry as written by this very gifted, eccentric man. He lived his life "his way" unapologetically as his every move was mercilessly scrutinized by his adoring, or otherwise envious, public. What a shame his life was so short.

Having previously not known much about Lord Byron other than some of his poetic works, this series has been of enormous interest to me as the author meticulously lays out the evidence of a most gifted, passionate, loving, paternal, brave, intelligent and generous-to-a-fault being who have all of himself to the world. His love of his children, friends, animals, sister and the fight to break the chains of enslavement in Italy and Greece are as equal to his personal/private love of his beloved Teresa. The tragic circumstances that constantly snapped at his heels never heeded his endeavors to better everyone else's lives be it lowly servant, starving citizen, any strays he had knowledge of or his friends, colleagues and love.

To put it bluntly, this man put his money where his mouth was including physically putting his life in danger for causes he championed verbally and in writing. Yet Byron was a very modest man as the reader will find in this amazingly written biography of his life.

I laughed many times as I read through the antics, practical jokes and satirical poetry. I cried as if he died yesterday. This author is to be commended on such a thoroughly investigated portrayal.

Needless to say, I absolutely recommend to readers of historical fiction. This is the life story of a man told so very humanly it is priceless in historical as well as identifying a true humanitarian.

Worthy end to the series .

The last in the series and Byron finally gets going off to Greece to help the Greeks fight for independence .Sadly his main contribution was to die of a fever but nevertheless this in itself helped galvanised popular support for the Greek cause and Greece's eventual freedom .I trust This isn't a spoiler as I presume the death of Byron is common knowledge at least in readers of this series .

This part of the story is told well and the portrayal of his death is quite affecting .The author clearly wants to portray Byron in a certain way and for example leaves out Byron's refusal to let Claire Clermont the mother of his daughter Allegra see the child in the convent he had despatched her to prior to Allegra's death . This contrasts with the complaint that Byron was prevented similarly from seeing his daughter by Lady Byron .

Similarly the controversy over the refusal to bury Byron in Westminster Abbey is not mentioned . Byron was a most complex character and portraying him in a certain way will always leave out certain aspects of this .Nevertheless the series is both entertaining and informing and well worth sticking with .I would say the first two volumes and this are the best of the seven books .

Finally a historical note it is mentioned that the Americans won the 1812 War with the British .In fact the British achieved their main aims of blockading trade with France and preserving Canada as a then British colony and at the very best the war was a draw for the Americans .

Heart wrenching

This book was extremely sad as any book dealing with death would be.
I have absolutely enjoyed all seven books in the Lord Byron series. From his time in Scotland to his inheriting the title of Lord.
His love of animals and people. His unfortunate marriage. His leaving England. Great Curran Browne has woven a beautiful and loving story of a man misunderstood by many and loved by many.
I have read all of me Brown's historical biographies and her work is magnificent.
Thank you

This book shares a wealth of detail on the end chapter of Lord Byron's life.

I appreciated the importance of his feeling democracy was the best form of government. So that, when Greece became a pon in a game traded for the spoils of war, he took action. He told the squabbling Greek factions that they must get over their differences if they genuinely desired their freedom to govern themselves.

Lord Byron possessed astounding courage. Acting on the strength of his conviction that the Nation of Greece deserved support to return to democracy, Lord Byron invested his fortune and time in weapons research. He then bought weapons and ships for Greek soldiers. His actions attracted the interest of the British public and gained more financial support for the battle for freedom.

Lord Byron did other infrequent actions. He did the opposite of most outside benefactors; he did his homework and worked alongside Greek fighters. He consulted British military officers.

A lovely journey

After reading the first book in the Byron series I couldn't wait for the next book. Now that I have read the final book I am sad that this lovely journey is over. It was however a great ride. I didn't know much about Lord Byron when studying Romantic Literature because John Keats was a fav. I appreciate this this set of books and I appreciate Ms. Browne for bringing us readers a wonderful romp through "Byronland." Thank you!

Lord Byron was one of a kind.

This is the Byron your college literature professor never knew. Kind handsome and charming, he felt deeply, laughed at nearly everything
and cherished those dear to him. Beautifully written and carefully researched, I suggest you start with the first book in the series. You will be glad you did.

The most enjoyable read are those that draw you into the story and Gretta Curran Browne has done that with the Lord Byron series. Throughout the series I grew to know the man and genuinely like him. She made me care about Byron his friendsm and their experieces surrounding them far more than from just a historic vantage.
