The king is dead. Prince Augustus and Princess Marie Rose ascend to the throne. Rose must submit to becoming the Queen Who Bowed, her role affirmed as she is claimed by her husband before the faery court--a role she dreads. But first, she is allowed a trip to the capital to attend the Ball de Anon, where masks allow her the privilege of privacy.
There, she meets the handsome and loyal officer Count Axel Farren of the high elves, whose destiny is soon to intertwine with that of Augustus and Rose in fateful and forbidden ways. The witch who cursed Rose at birth has not given up on her desire to bring down the Palace of the Sun. Her spies are everywhere; slander and manipulation her weapons. Will love be Marie Rose's undoing?
This very steamy and sensual retelling of Sleeping Beauty is inspired by the life of Marie Antoinette. If you haven't read my other fairy tales or even if you have, let me warn you about this trilogy: It will include cliffhangers, menage, naughty spells, naughty vines, naughty clockwork, naughty dreams, and plenty of decadent surprises.
Lidiya Foxglove grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales, folklore and fantasy and also reads way too much manga. Fantasy romance is her favorite thing in the world, but she likes it steamy. She also loves cats and tea--it's cliche for a reason!
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Even better then book one! Augustus and Marie are to be crowned King and Queen now that his father is dead. The problem is whether Marie is ready for the coronation ceremony and all that comes with it (I personally could not have done it but you go girl!) which is necessary in order for their reign to be accepted. With all the rules, twists, and turns I had no clue what was going to happen next especially after the new addition to the mix. This book has great world building and an original story that will really have you wanting to know what happens next. If you like the genre I bet you will like the book/series. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Long and relatively uninteresting plot, little character development. The marie antoinette thing was just too much. Despite our insider perspective on the character, she is just too dumb and naive to be engaging. I get that she is sheltered, but so many times it was made apparent that what was happening was wrong and she is just stupid. Critical thinking = 1/10 with this chickie.
Marie antoinette as a historical figure interess me, the petit trianon is bizarre and lovely. And certainly the rococo asthetic made me traipse all over europe, but in a story context the cruelty that supported such lavishness is too disgusting to countenance from our heroine. If it had been shorter i might have been able to stomach it, but i cant.
The plot is simply not as engaging as her other, more unique stuff.
I love this story and these characters. So excited with the addition of yummy Axel. I can feel that something big is about to happen and I’m so excited to find out what that is.
I really liked the addition of Axel, I can't wait to see more of him in the next book! This book seemed to be the calm before the storm, and I'm nervous yet excited for the next book lol. The touch of Marie Antoinettes history here was spot on as well, with her love for fashion and characteristics starting to show more.
From book #1 I knew this wasn't your typical fairytale retelling. Here we follow Rose as she is undergoes her coronation after successfully "defeating" the Cobblestone witch. Unfortunately, their HEA is not so happy as she continues to suffer court gossip regarding her lack of deference to the King and lack of heirs. It doesn't help when Alex our high elf who quickly becomes the King's and Rose's lover, creating the start of a reverse harem trope. I wasn't as intrigued with this sequel as I was in the first book - I felt there was too much sex and not enough story. I also felt Rose's character development really weakened here as she becomes too spoiled with court life and foregoing caring for the citizens suffering through hunger and poverty. Instead she blows her budget without a care in the world. Very immature as a queen. Augustus' role didn't move much either - he still appeared as if he would follow the whim's of the court versus his own heart, but then proves us wrong when he brings in Alex to their relationship. He also doesn't show any discipline when it comes to Rose even though she desperately needs it.
This was the second book I have read in this dark fairy tale retelling of the Sleeping Beauty. Queen of the Sun Palace was filled with controversy and erotic images of the most perplexing characters. A King and Queen that are so consumed with each other and the third person in their twisted relationship that they fail to see that the kingdom is slowly crumbling around them, people are starving and dying while they pursue their own personal pleasures. For me this story definitely delivered some intriguing concepts unfortunately it still doesn't show any real depth of the characters or story other than a very creative way the author just wrote another erotic novel packed with endless sexual scenes between the three some. Don't think I want to read more about Rose and her doomed story!
Meh. No world building. No magic. Just weird sex scenes.
I enjoyed the first book enough, even with it’s strange sexual blips, to check out the second. I like a steamy book as much as the next girl, but the sex scenes in this book were just, weird. This book is more like a strange retelling of Marie Antoinette’s life with a magical spindle involved. Briar Rose, renamed, Marie Rose is a selfish sex starved queen. The first book stated how head strong and willful she was, but that lasted all of 5 seconds before she was happily debasing herself in front of people. Calling this a fairy tale retelling is a major stretch.
I found I enjoyed this book more than I enjoyed the first, and there is one person I must thank for that. Axel. Axel. Axel. Axel. I will be honest, the FMC of this book annoyed the ever living shite out of me in some scenes, but I tried to be understanding because of her situation. STILL the author did such a remarkable job at highlighting the FMC's strong as well as weak traits (and those of the Prince) and when Axel came into their little kingdom, I was so, so excited. He completes them and not to mention her F/M/M scenes are HOT HOT HOT. Can't wait to read the next one!!
The author added another character to their romance and I’m not against those type of things. In fact, I enjoyed this book because of the healthy competition as well as the redemption of the witch who was initially against them. It’s a very light read and I went through it very quickly.
I enjoyed the first book so much more, this one dragged on so long and seeing how spoiled the queen was kind of made me sympathetic to the common people. Also the romance with Axel felt so rushed and did not feel as real.

So I was kinda bored in the first half but I flew through the last forty percent of it and it was a lot of fun. It was steamy as hell. I hope the finale ends in happily ever after.
This series is not your average story about the fae. I love the characters and the amount of turmoil the FMC is put through is rediculous. I can't wait for book 3 to find out how everything works out.
