THE MOUNTAINS WILL NOT HIDE HIS SECRET. TWO MEN ON THE RUN, BUT WHAT IS IT THAT FOLLOWS THEM? Neurotic Ralph and easy-going Harvey are trying to escape from their past in the desolate mountains of Scotland. Not only are they alcoholics, one of them holds a terrible secret he is desperate to leave behind. But something is following them, and it is seeking revenge. Their journey will turn into a living nightmare and survival for one of them may mean the end for the other. You cannot run forever. At some point, the only way to have a future is to turn and face the past.
Thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Atmospheric, melancholic, laced with pathos and wry humour. Excellent plot and intriguing outcome which every reader enjoys. Strong characterisation, complex and endearing personas, all the more so for their flaws and imperfections. The poems were also a nice touch. Almost offering a staging post for the author's state of mind as each chapter draws to a close. I can highly recommend this book. It won't disappoint.
I borrowed this book through KU with a certain expectation of what it was going to be like but fully prepared to be let down. However, that wasn't the case and I blew through it pretty quickly. I wouldn't say I was particularly scared but what was so great about this book and what the author does so well is create a sense of unease with the landscape and setting and how the story unfolds. I loved the humor and the characters, genuinly cared about what happened to them. I would read this again, I loved it.
…but I really wanted not to finish this book. I really really didn’t. But. The suspense and frightening things that were happening to the main character had grabbed me and I had to know. Maybe tomorrow I could give over the story. Yeah, tomorrow I will put it down. :). This was a wonderful and sobering insight onto the lives of alcoholics… dear heaven more than I wanted to know. I hope that the very believable picture that was painted of the futility of trying to beat addiction was not from the author’s experience. Anyway it was a captivating read, well plotted and gave this American an insight into Scotland that I was able to enjoy in spite of the dark aspects of the story. I will never, however, walk a long trail anywhere ever again! Highly recommended!
A well-written psychological horror story, intense, tragic, and dark.
As with Pearson's novel, Scotland Shall Burn, The Path is set in Scotland. The land itself is a powerful character and it plays a terrifying and unpredictable role in the tale.
The two main human characters are living lives of occasionally noisy desperation and as the plot progresses things go from bad to worse to hell-on-Earth. The twists and turns of their journey through the Scottish countryside are reflective of the twists and turns of their lives.
If you enjoy being scared out of your wits, The Path is a ghost story you need to read. The author's sense of humor peeks out occasionally to relieve a bit of the gloom but at the same time serves as stark contrast to the darkness of the characters' lives and the fate that awaits.
This is a very hard book to rate. It is well written and it should be read, but, at least for me, it was not entertaining. I was looking for an "escape" read and hoping this was it, it wasn't. The story revolves around two (and later a third) alcoholics; the main two decide to take a long walk in Scotland one to clean-up his life, the other to escape a horrible secret (which may get the two killed). On this walk they may (or may not) be followed by ghosts, but who they are and why the are following the two is not clear. The book delves deeply into the bane of alcoholism, and this is what made it sad for me.
I actually know those two characters, well I recognise them and that's what drew me in to this story. It's a many layered story, beautifully crafted . Will definitely be reading more by Richard M Pearson.
The book is very captivating and keeps you guessing until the end. I was hooked from the start and could wait to finish it. It was a great story on it owns. However the author goes deeper in order to bring attention to larger issues.
Lots of humor in this book! I laughed out loud several times, which was surprising for a horror novel. The book focuses heavily on alcoholism (wasn’t a fan of that, but that's just a personal preference) and going on a remote hill walk through Scotland (I liked that a lot).
I can’t explain it but the book hit too close to home. Not the crime but the relationships and the minor struggles. And it is the relationships that make this book and if you know you know and if you don’t, you may just understand
Really enjoyed this book ,was not what I expected . made me laugh a lot and also feel sad ,I thought the details and description of how they felt esp when describing the cold was brilliant writing .I would definitely recommend this book ..not your usual ghost story
