Deep, Deep Ocean

Rate this book
Something is hiding in Silas's home.

With only one week of summer left, Silas is only beginning to discover that the world he has known for nine years may not be the safe place it once was. Something dark has crawled from the ocean, something that will change Silas's perspective on everything he once held dear, if he can reclaim it.

From the breakout suspense author of Part-Timers arrives the introspective coming-of-age story that dives between the lines where dream and reality meet. Told from the perspective of nine-year-old Silas, Deep, Deep Ocean captivates readers with a story of hope, desperation, and faith that courage overcomes even the darkest hours.

Interview With The Author

There are a lot of references in this book, interweaving other stories with this one. What was the intention behind this?

Everyone's childhood is influenced by those first stories that they come across. The way we see the world, the way we see ourselves, they're all influenced by the books, movies, and even the games we find ourselves captivated by. Silas's love of stories such as Coraline, One Piece, and even trips to the aquarium were taken directly from my own childhood.

That being said, would you consider Deep, Deep Ocean to be a book for children?

I believe a child will read this as a completely different book than an adult would. Even within the story, there are two narratives at play - one at Silas's level, and one going on over his head. The two intertwine, as do our perspectives as we grow from chidren into adults. Looking at the reader though, what scares a child and what scares an adult are often very different things.

Who would you recommend this novel to, then?

If you enjoyed works by Neil Gaiman, including Coraline or The Graveyard Book, then Deep, Deep Ocean will be a perfect blend of the myteries in magic and adulthood, both as uknowable and mysterious as the other.
