A great introduction to the gaming side of Warhammer 40k. Having been a fan of the lore of this dystopian sci fi universe for quite some time, I thought it was about time to try getting into the hobby further.
This book is a great starting place. It should also come with one space marine miniature. However it will soon be superseded by a new version. This is for the 8th edition of the game, with a new one coming out soon for 9th edition.
It is broke up and clearly details the following 4 sections: Collect, Build, Paint, and Play.
Collect and build details the various different factions in the game and gives a bit of background on them. There is a focus and more detail on Ultramarines and Death Guard but all factions (to my knowledge) are outlined.
The most helpful aspect for me was the Paint section. Art and painting I do not consider to be a personal strong point. It was the most intimidating part of the hobby for me. I thought I’d be able to build the miniatures but this is the area I needed the support with. Help it does! It clearly and helpfully breaks down the different steps that should be taken when painting, types of brushes to use, plus how different painting techniques work and what you would expect to see on your models. There are then detailed guides for painting select models in both the Ultramarine and Death Guard army. But if you are not interested in those, fear not as the tips are easily transferable.
Play section details various aspects of playing the table top game. Including a battle report that goes through round by round what happened in a battle. Additionally you get a breakdown of the units data sheets and what all the stats means. On top of that you also get a detailed step by step of how a game should be played. It’s not full rules by any means, but enough to get you started without feeling overwhelmed.
A fantastic introduction to the hobby of Warhammer 40k. If you have been intrigued by it, this is a great and low cost place to start. This version at the moment is going cheap due to the new version coming out soon. However you may wish to wait for that to get up to date rules etc.
A good and cheap introduction to 40k tabletop with information for the basic rules and painting miniatures. I would highly recommend this for beginners.
