Steve Zim has been a professional trainer in Los Angeles for nearly three decades. He has trained many professional athletes and A-list celebrities, helping them improve performance and get in shape to play challenging physical roles. During his career Zim has learned which nutrition strategies work best to help you get in shape quickly and maintain your new condition for life. Superhero Nutrition provides an easy-to-follow program that will allow you to get into the best shape of your life and maintain it. Superhero Nutrition is a two-part Part 1) You can integrate your current food choices into Superhero Nutrition. If you are vegan, Paleo, or follow Weight Watchers or South Beach etc., or if you have food allergies, intolerances or ethical or religious restrictions, your nutrition program will work with this system. Part 2) Zim also provides a detailed daily nutrition guide you can choose to follow, telling you what to eat and when. There is also a 54-page recipe guide that covers healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert options. Included is a chapter on exercise that provides you with a 3-day-a-week lifting and cardio program. The success of this program has already been demonstrated by BuzzFeed personalities, whose “We Trained Like Superheroes for 30 Days” video went viral.
Since the Glow up Diaries season 2 was released I was hoping for a collaboration between Alivia and Steve, and it did happen. You can watch her videos and I highly recommend her serie, but I think you should read this tiny book as well.
It talks about nutrition, cardio and strenght training, the 3 principles that Steve relies on for weight loss and it works. There are 10 rules in the book which I will give them to you, but read the book for an introspection.
RULE #1: Eat two or three meals per day (with no snacking)
RULE #2: Schedule your meals and your workouts ahead of time every day
RULE #3: Choose the right foods for fat loss
RULE #4: Follow the glycemic load principle
RULE #5: Get your portions right
RULE #6: Take BCAAs before and after your workouts
RULE #7: Drink the right fluids
RULE #8: Follow the rules, but allow yourself a cheat meal
RULE #9: Sleep long and deep
RULE #10: Keep track of your fat-loss results
The book also has meal plans, recipes and overall you should read it if you want to commit to weight loss.
You pay way too much for what you get with this book. There's under 200 pages and most of it is repeated information or him trying to sell his other books. I can honestly say it barely any different to other diets; eat less, cut carbs, give up sugar entirely and no snacks. the meals are boring and flavourless. Also you didn't need an entire page dedicated to tell you how to bake chicken and boil veg as a meal. The "breakthrough" technique is only eating every 6 hours to prevent insulin spikes. Hard to do with the portion sizes recommended , and you spend all day craving flavour. Not impressed.
Clear and concise book for people who are beginners to nutrition, fitness and exercise. However, some parts seem like pseudo-science/bro science and there's even a part in the book where he mentions a statement that hasn't been backed up by science or a research study, but then he confirms with something along the lines of "Trust me, I know - I have experience."
Steve explains everything simply and perfectly so that there are no questions and everything makes sense. This book is extremely helpful. I can't wait to purchase Steve's other books and read them as well. Thanks Steve!
If you have tried different diets, you may find them all here
I was quite disappointed with this book, quite a few of the recipes in other diets can be found in this book...including the cabbage soup diet soup. Definitely, appreciate and agree the 3 meals approach, but not a fan of the palm measuring process. It would be nice if he actually gave calorie ideas, who knows maybe those will be in the superhero training book, which I will be passing on.
Like many, I read this book, because it seems pretty intersting because of a few buzzfeed videos. In the end I was a bit disappointed. The book mentions ten rules. All of them are pretty basic if you already know a bit about nutrition. So it was nice for people who are completly new to the topic.
If you want a bad relationship with food or an eating disorder, this is the book to go. If you want to learn more about nutrition, this book is not what you want, because it doesn't give any scientific sources or evidence. It is just another diet book for quick fixes that I am afraid won't last a lifetime.
El texto es simple y desde un principio deja las reglas claras. Lo más interesante del libro, probablemente sea el autor, que es el entrenador de algunas celebridades de Hollywood y modelos. Reglas sencillas, aplicarlas es lo complicado.
I got through about half of this before finding a bunch of YouTube videos basically disproving the main thesis of this book and overall exercise/diet program. Steve Zim wants you to monitor your insulin levels to a fine-toothed level, asserting that this is the reason for lack of fat burn in all bodies. If you 1) take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before every meal, 2) leave 5-6 hours time between each meal (essentially only having a window for 2-3 meals a day total), and 3) work out in fasted state, no matter what the exercise, and finally 4) take his presribed BCAAs - all this will eventually give you a dream body.
Although I could get on board with some of these things (fasting between meals did make me feel lighter/less tired and sluggish throughout the day; apple cider vinegar tastes gross but no big deal, etc.) other ones I did have issues with, particularly lifting weights fasted. Reaching out to Steve on his website contact form gave no response whatsoever. Or maybe it was because I was referring to discrepancies in his book, such as when he tells you to never eat a meal within 2.5 hours of a workout, but to eat something after "if you can." What?
This stuff makes me mad, mostly because I recognize the pull to believe these people and throw money and time into something for weeks, months, that garners no results. Also it's not sustainable, and shouldn't we all be on a plan we can commit to for life?
Okay, rant over. I think this falls firmly under the category of Take what works, Leave the rest.
Terribly structured and consistently repetitive. Some good nuggets of information and that's it. It helped me get a better understanding of fitness as an amateur. This would be a good first step.
For the longest time I didn't know he had any book out and thought the only way to get ripped would to go to his gym in California and living thousands of miles away that was sucky news until the youtube algorithm hit me with another incredible transformation with him talking about his book. So that was nice. And If you've watched the same thousands of youtube videos from buzzfeed or follow Gabbie Hannah as I have then we're probably on the same wavelength when it comes to the incredible Steve Zim.
So this book is essentially all the secrets Zim didn't spill during those videos/ a true encapsulation of everything he did say in but more depth. ALSO its's so weird but because I've binged those videos I could read everything in this book with his very specific valley accent and it made the whole learning process better. Anyway, I loved how he dove into the science behind insulin and how it affects everything. Overall great educational read to help pry me away from yo-yo dieting so that's nice because I if I read one more thing about fit tea or keto I might keel over and die. BUT, my one and only qualm, with his day-by-day nutrition plan (in the back of the book) is that he talks about salad with dressing. I love salad and dressing but I would've liked if he'd make a recommendation about which dressing to use because I'm sure a store bought olive garden Italian wouldn't work.
I hope it works because being 18 and having yo-yo dieted my way through middle school and high school because I didn't know any better sucked. Cheers to 2021 or a year of guided healthier living!
Listen, was this book fine for a beginning look into nutrition? Sure! I'm trying to start eating healthier and this was recommended to me. It goes over some good basic concepts, provides insight into how your body works and processes food, but does this author have any scientific or medical background? NO. There is still a ton of BS science in here.
At one point Zim quotes a the CDC and then says "yea so because that is true.....I noticed this so clearly there is correlation" even though there is nothing to back him up. I started to just laugh at some of the nutrition and supplement info in the middle of the book. I have family in the medical world and so I thankfully knew a lot of this was BS and just didn't take it to heart, but definitely misleading for those who don't know and are taking Zim's word as truth!
Also some of the recipes in the back of the book are expensive to make! He included like a 30 day meal plan, and you eat homemade sushi with like 4 types of fish! I'm not even sure I can buy yellowtail in Ohio lol.
Like many others, I first came across Steve Zim through Alivia D’Andrea’s videos, which I watched alongside some BuzzFeed content. Intrigued by Steve’s approach in these videos, I was eager to dive into his written work, and I'm thrilled that I did. This book is nothing short of spectacular.
Steve Zim has a remarkable ability to present information in a way that is both easy to digest and highly informative. The book is concise, direct, and full of practical advice, which I found refreshing. From workout routines and exercises to meal ideas and formulas for achieving your goal weight, every recommendation is specific and actionable.
What really sets this book apart is the depth of scientific knowledge that underpins it. While the information could easily become overwhelming, Steve's writing style makes complex concepts simple and accessible, which I greatly appreciate. All in all, this is a highly insightful read that delivers both clarity and value.
It is a easy to read trough, not to much science or too much details that can give you sometimes a reasonnot to start a new lifestyle. I like that you get practical advice that you can start applying right away. In this book you can also find a good structure for creating your own eating plan no matter the type of dietary restrictions you have. Even though I would like to see a meal plan or at least some suggestions for a plant base diet plan, I still loved the book and I am confident that with a little creativity I'll make my own meal plan.
If you feel lost in too many books and too much since I fully recommend this book as a starting structure for a new lifestyle journey.
Most of the information I already knew in some form or fashion. The only “new” information for me where his ideas around fasting. Leaving 5 hours between each meal with a recommended 3 meals a day. I will be utilizing this method as a person who has tried many types of fasting before I have realized that the method Steve explains is the most sustainable for me and my life style. The YouTube videos and online articles all could have summed up this same information and saved us a lot of time. A great idea for someone who doesn’t have much knowledge on portions and how foods effect insulin etc. As a person with PCOS who has been elbow deep in nutrition and health for several years trying to figure out what works best for me there was very little “ground breaking” information for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A few days ago, I saw this girl Youtuber who mentioned this book as her guide in her weightloss program and I was quite impressed of his methods. The book is well written and there is actually science behind his concepts regarding insulin resistance and stuff. No other wellness books other than this (yet) made me more motivated to focus on my own health and self-improvement. Although the meal plan is quite unreasonable and hard to follow (I don’t know where to get those food since i’m from another country), I have to say that everything else in the book is realistic and actually possible to achieve.
I really loved this book. Steve showed food in such a different light. He told us that food is just more than calories. The importance of building lean muscles and eating the right food at the right time. I personally loved this book. This book shows that a fit body can be maintained for life if we just know the right way of eating and doing workouts according to our body. The importance of body symmetry. I think anyone who struggles with weightloss this book is your answer to all your weightless struggles I am personally going to apply all these rules that Steve have written in this book. 🥰
one of my favorite nutrition books from one of my favorite fitness dudes. this is my third read, and it’s still helpful. the science is simple and the nutrition is not restrictive. in a nutshell - glycemic load and appropriate portions depending on your goal. flexible for different allergies/lifestyles.
discusses exercise too, as steve zim is a fitness trainer. check him out on his website and his youtube partnership videos. his understanding of how a muscle develops and looks aesthetically is really unique.
This book really opens your eyes to how the loose fat. I love that it says fat and not weight because fat is what people want to loose to look better instead of weight. This book informed me on how to plan and structure my meals, how to time them, and when to workout so that I can loose as much fat as safe and fast as possible. I have seen so many amazing results using this program and I myself am excited to see what it brings to me.
I don't know much about diet cookbooks, but most of the info is pretty basic. I also think there are simpler alternatives to the palm measuring rule, and most of the snacks and desserts rely on whey or other substances as a protein base with no kind of alternative, and 1000 calories is way too low of a limit. The human body should at least get 1200-ish calories so it wont cannibalise itself; lowering this limit is a call for ED
My rating is the way it is because of the way this book is written. I felt it was chaotic, the info was repeated many times. The information is good, especially if you are a newbie into the nutrition field. But I'm certain that there many other and better books then this one on the subject of nutrion.
Interesting to read , but I found not a sustainable diet for me. I have low blood sugar to begin with mind you but without being able to freely eat fruits when needed I would end up dying in my sleep 😂 I’m sure this works people who don’t have blood sugar issues.
I do like his recommended workouts and do follow them often.
I just finished reading and I can’t wait to get started! A lot of things in this book make sense to me and I’m grateful Steve makes this feel accessible for both meat eaters and those with more of a plant-based diet. I’ve also signed up for atumobile.com and have been loving the workouts!
I liked the discussion of eating times for muscle gain/fat loss and your portions without calorie counting and BCAAs. It is overpriced for what you get. Not exactly a riveting read and none of the meal plans included were particularly groundbreaking (would be better if there had been a grocery list included).
