Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

"Exactly, Watson. Pathetic and futile. But is not all life pathetic and futile? Is not his story a microcosm of the whole? We reach. We grasp. And what is left in our hands at the end? A shadow. Or worse than a shadow— misery."

I’ll be rereading these stories for the rest of my life – I enjoy them so much! Brilliant, elegant, complete and satisfying. And the old English is music to my mind!

Short and sweet, worth the read.

Particularly engaging stories within this last compilation in the tetra-volumed Sherlock Holmes series: "The Adventure of the Three Garridebs", "His Last Bow" and "Bruce-Parlington Plans".

What a treat it is whenever a character narrator gets to play as the focaliser and even lets the focalised take the narrative lead on occasion. Surprisingly shocked at Arthur's ethnic, cognitive and physical inclusivity when it comes to interspersing the tertiary characters throughout every case.

Here's some food for thought: understanding the Holmes-Watson dynamic as that of Quijote and Panza.

I’m so sad that I’ve reached the end of Sherlock and Watson but I’m so happy I’ve read the entirety of the Sherlock Holmes works!
