As we approach Halloween, this utterly bewitching novella will be released in time to bring a romance with a twist and a wonderful addition to the Captivating Captain's series.

Out two erstwhile ghostly heroes are given a somewhat different awakening when two of their descents come to sell off the manor house they fought a duel and died over.

For the Captain and Rookwood the arrival of Dan and Jenny gives them an opportunity to realise their feelings have somewhat changed during the past three centuries.

This really is a delightful, if short, spooky romance and I loved it.

#ARC kindly received from the authors in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Oh, my goodness! How much do love this series?…Really, there isn’t enough time – or space in the post to say. As soon as I got offered to read this, I jumped at the chance to read it and I did stay up way past my bedtime to read it 😉 The Captain’s Ghostly Gamble is book three in the wonderfully diverse and splendiferous Captivating Captains series, I have fallen in love with this series, you never know what’s going to come next. Or for that matter what era you’re going to be transported to.

After they killed each other in a duel over Rookwood/Sheridan Manor Sheridan and Rookwood are left roaming the huge house for the next couple of hundred years protecting it from various threats. Plus, left to put up with each other, the two men who were mortal enemies in life carry on bickering in death, steadily over the years growing closer and closer when suddenly their home under the threat again – from a very unlikely source – they must join forces to protect their manor.

These two are a hoot, they constantly snipe and provoke one another, whether it’s Rookwoods growling and stomping about or Sheridan’s fabulously up beat chatter. Curzon and Harkstead have a this talented of created the most engaging and laugh out loud characters, ever and these two are two of the best. If I was going to be living in a haunted house, I want to be sharing that house with these two. I love how different they are to each other and yet their personalities’ tend to bounce of one an other. Sheridan or ‘The Captain’ is such a fabulously fun character, the way he antagonizes Rookwood is so entertaining – Plus, I’ve always been charmed with green eyes. Rookwood – Oh, Rookwood! I probably sound like a broken record, but I do love a rough-around-the-edge, gruff man and this one is simply grand. Sheridan and Rookwood are definitely two of my favourite character’s, they are a wonderful double-act!

The Captains Ghostly Gamble is an amusing, dreamy and original romance that will keep you enchanted and riveted to the end. I love how even though this is a short story, there are two romances packed in, one in the mortal realm and the other on the ghostly plane. Both are connected, but I ain’t going to tell you in what way, you’ll just have to read it and find out. This is another hugely romantic story about ever-lasting love, with two of the least bit scary but hugely entertaining ghosts you have ever met. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest instalment of this marvellous series and I wait with baited-breath to see what comes next.

Roll on the next one!

*I received a free ARC of this novella, with thanks to the authors. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

The Captain’s Ghostly Gamble is a short romp in the Captivating Captains series by these two skillful romantic writers.

Told from the point of view of two mischievous, feuding ghostly frenemies as they meddle in the affairs of two of their descendants (one each), this novella is a quick, sweet read.

Most of the romance and all of the eroticism comes towards the climax of the story, as the spirits realise what the reader knew all along… that they belong together in the afterlife despite their disagreements in life.

As usual with the romance I have read by Eleanor Harkstead and Catherine Curzon, any period details feel authentic and the relationship building, as friends and lovers, is natural and awwwww-inducing!

I have a minor quibble about the longevity of the descendant’s relationship, as their conflict is slightly contrived and hinges on the idea that they have such poor communication with each other that they can completely misinterpret the other’s deepest wishes. This doesn’t seem like such a great basis for a solid relationship! However, as the story is really about the other couple anyway, this isn’t really a big problem.

If you enjoy a quick, easy, lighthearted, paranormal erotic story then this one’s for you!

At the sound of their guests letting themselves in at the front door, John sighed. “Rookwood Manor has been in my family for generations, as well you know, you damned dandy interloper!”
“Indeed, sir, Sheridan Manor was once home to your people, but one believes there was the small matter of a duel and now it is mine.” Sheridan glanced at John and beamed, his handsome face now fashionable pale. He bowed low, a cloud of rose perfume billowing from the decadent cuffs. “Let us go and say hello to our newest friends, Mr Rookwood!”

This book was provided for free by the publisher and Love Bytes in exchange for an honest review.

This review was first posted to Love Bytes: LGBTQ Book Reviews. It has been slightly edited here for content.

I’ve been a fan of both books in this series so far, though it’s hard to call it a series because all of the books are so different. The first was historical, the second modern, and this one is a ghost story. It’s also, unfortunately, the weakest link so far.

I really enjoyed the set-up. Rookwood and Sheridan—a rogue and a dandy—are stuck together for eternity after killing each other in a dual, and they’re trapped in mutual pining as they watch their descendants bicker in their old home. They decide to play a little matchmaker for their niece and nephew, and along the way, come to their senses about their feelings for each other.

Since all of the other books in the “Captivating Captains” series have been full-length novels, I was surprised by the short length for this one. The story seems so involved and full of character detail that making it a short story is just cutting out the good stuff. John and Sheridan have awesome, bickering chemistry, and Dan and Jen are adorable, but there’s just no time to get to know them before they get their happily ever after.

It’s a fun addition to a great series, but not the stand-out so far. I really wish it was a novel-length work. The odd-couple love story between Rookwood and his captain deserves many more pages!

“From goulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties and things that go bump in the night, good Lord, deliver us!” ~The Cornish and West Country Litany, 1926

Captain Cornelius Sheridan and John Rookwood, of 'The Captain's Ghostly Gamble' by Catherine Curzon and Eleanor Harkstead, are about their regular routine when company comes calling. As Cornelius and John contemplate how best to get rid of them, they discover that their “ghost hunter” guests are none other than Dan Rookwell and Jenny Sheridan, their respective descendants. This revelation changes their game plan. Instead of wanting them gone, Cornelius and John want to communicate with them. They become frustrated, knowing that the only way to let the couple know they are pleased to see them is through whiffs of rose scent, or stomps of their feet.

When they discover that Dan and Jenny are a couple they are taken aback by the fact that a Sheridan and a Rookwood could fall in love, but when they see how much they love each other, they want to counsel them on love and the importance of listening to each other. Dan and Jenny are having a serious lack of communication; instead of selling the mansion, Jenny and Dan secretly want to keep it, but neither will admit it for fear of upsetting the other. Cornelius and John think that when a couple is in love, they should not hold feelings and thoughts inside, but must express them. Otherwise, how would one know how another feels.

Even with their limited way of communication, Jenny is sure they are there and listening so she confides in them that she really wants to live here. Dan is skeptical, but eventually admits to John and Cornelius that he wants to stay there as well, but thinks that selling the mansion is the only way he can give Jenny the best life possible: money and possessions. Even knowing that neither Dan nor Jenny want anything other than to live there, have babies, dogs, and huge Christmas trees, there's little more that Sheridan and John can do; if they fail, they know that Jenny's heart will be broken and Daniel will always regret his choice.

Catherine and Eleanor have a created a quirky, funny, and romantic story involving funny, but endearing ghosts who most of all should take the advice they are dishing out. It seems odd to say that about ghosts, but they even have character growth. Their descriptions are detailed and hilarious and the tales they relate about past antics to scare people had me laughing so hard, my husband came in to check on me. Seriously, the tale may be short and sweet but there's a lot of emotion and an important lesson to always be honest with the ones you love. Thanks, Catherine and Elizabeth, for a very entertaining story.

A ScatteredThoughtsandRogueWords Review. This review can also be found here.

John Rookwood and Captain Cornelius Sheridan have been haunting the very Manor they died fighting over, two hundred and fifty years ago.

On their death anniversary, a couple turns up to disturb their eternal rest and fantastically turn up to be related to the very pair. It soon becomes clear to the ghostly duo that the couple harbours many misconceptions and in an effort to ensure their happily ever after they play into the gamble of manifesting themselves.

But manifestation can take up a lot of energy, enough to wipe out a spirit from the spiritual plane and as the Captain seems in imminent danger of disappearing from all existence, John Rookwood is confronted by his feelings for his companion of the past two centuries.

I don’t know how people feel about two ghosts getting it on but that is definitely something that is a part of this story, so you might want to confront your views on the same.

The story has an interesting blurb but with some misguidance, it set up a very confusing introduction. It took a while for me to understand what was happening in the story and who all the characters were.

By the time everything was in place and you know what is going on there isn’t much left in the way of plot, just a very elaborate scene featuring ghosts getting it on.

I wasn’t wholly invested in any of the characters because it was hard to relate to them in any real way. The dialogue is very dated, the way our two main characters speak is awkward to the point that it was really funny and so very hard to take seriously. The dialogue might have been the most entertaining thing in this book but not in the way the authors intended.

It is an okay, quick fun read with some heretofore never seen elements that were a little weird in their depiction.

Cover Art by Cherith Vaughn. I really like the cover. This might be the only case of cover models actually resembling the characters they represent that made it one of the best covers. But, I must also commend the choice of background and text, especially the colour scheme and that hint of yellow is delectable.

This was a cute story, very sweet and light. There is some angst, and I loved the way it was resolved—very romantic! The story is a quick read, and the perfect way to finish my day. I liked the way the two sets of relationships paralleled each other.

The two ghosts are very quirky. I enjoyed the banter between them, which starts as quite surface and then grows into something much deeper, a reflection of what has been there for a long time. They’re very much a product of their time, yet with a hint of much more beneath their surface, which makes me wonder if the mansion was really the reason for their duel.

I’d recommend The Captain’s Ghostly Gamble to readers who enjoy a light, quirky short ghost story with interesting characters.

4 Stars!

This was such a fun, quirky, hot and entertaining short story! (Ghostly) Enemies-to-Lovers with just a smidgen of MF. Both Sheridan and Rookwood were hilarious and even if they had spent the last centuries together as ghosts in the mansion where they dueled and died, they were quite oblivious to their feelings for one another. It wasn't until their descendants, Jen and Dan, came to check the house to see if they should sell it and Sheridan and Rookwood decide to play matchmakers that they finally see the light, so to speak. Definitely recommendable!

This was a short, fun read that fits nicely into the Captivating Captain's series that I'm rather fond of!

Set in modern day where two ghost hunters from long rivalling families want to check out the rumours that their old stately home is haunted before either selling up or moving in, the two ghosts that have haunted the walls for centuries have to step out to save not only their house but also their ancestry.

It's a fun tale of finding love even in death.

Recommended for a quick read that'll have you laughing and awwwing by the end.

When a duel ended with both men dead I doubt either expected to be stuck with each other for eternity but that is exactly where they find themselves some two hundred years later. Rockwood and Sheridan have been pushing each others buttons as well as letting their families know they(and others especially a frisky feline) linger. As a old classic film fan, The Captain's Ghostly Gamble reminds me kind of a mix of The Odd Couple meets Topper meets Beyond Tomorrow, but oh so more.

Ghostly Gamble is a delightfully humor filled novella that is perfect for this time of year. Matchmaking ghosts, bickering frenemies who have spent way more time together then they ever expected, descendants who aren't completely honest with each other, and then there is the moment where everything becomes clear(but what that moment is and what "becomes clear" is something you have to read for yourself😉😉) there is plenty packed into this Captivating Captains short that will make you smile, laugh, smile again, and laugh some more.

Halloween isn't the time you normally expect to find a romantic comedy but it does happen, they don't always work but The Captain's Ghostly Gamble does. A truly delightful read for any time of year but an extra special treat now. I was aware of this story last October but unfortunately time just wasn't on my side and it just kept slipping down my TBR list but I came across it the other day and jumped at the chance before time decided otherwise again. I'm glad I found it again because The Captain's Ghostly Gamble is a true gem.

Funny engaging short story

Another in the Captains series. A funny ghostly tale in time for October's Halloween. You will enjoy the two rather camp ghosts.
