Some Guys Have All The Luck
Deborah Cooke

Cooke’s latest in her Flat Iron 5 series is a hot frienemy to lovers tale that deals with some tough, timely issues and stars a couple who will light up and heat up the pages. Reid is the typical misunderstood bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks and Cassie is a woman with a past full of secrets and regrets whose problems have followed both of them to adulthood. The dialogue is casual immersing readers right into the story and one of the first love scenes has an OMG result that will blow the audience away. The costars help fill in all the missing personality and storyline puzzle pieces and Cassie and Reid are definitely the novel’s rockstars so if you’re looking for a poignant sexy heated read and don’t mind shedding a few tears along the way this just might be your next must read.

SUMMARY:
Up until a friend’s baby’s christening brought her back to her too small, with too many bad memories town of Montrose River, Illinois Cassie Wilson managed to get out of Dodge and never look back. She did good too, living in Manhattan a founding partner of the hottest fitness club in town. In fact the only thing that’s missing in her life is love and she knows she’ll NEVER find that where she grew up. But she’s not against a little weekend fling with the former bad boy of town who grew up to be one hot hunk of man.
After his football days ended because of a career ending injury Reid Jackson came back to his hometown and made good spitting in the eye of everyone who thought he’d amount to nothing just like his old man. One sight does floor him though, when former tomboy Cassie Wilson who grew up to be all woman, walks through the isles of the local Shop N Save. He doesn’t do relationships but he wouldn’t say no to a heated, mostly naked weekend affair.

This book is set in a small town and the reader gets all the drama of a small town: everybody knows everybody, there is a lot of gossip, there are lots of prejudices, and Cassie as a teen didn't dare to stand up to her tormenter because he was well liked. The hero was condemned because of his abusive father and even decades later people look at him warily although he improves town live.

When Cassie returns for the baptism of her godchild (she accepted that duty in order to help the baby girl to leave the town in the future) she meets the hero, sparks fly, and they agree on a weekend fling. Some of their banter was hilarious, they slowly develop feelings, and then her uncle's legacy, a book evaluating the citizens, leads to the HEA.

I liked that the book didn't focus on the romance but told side-plots about her sister, about Reid's football career and relationship with Martie, and retrospects of her mother.

Hot steamy sexy romance of two former high school classmates who were attracted to each other but with immature perceptions kept each other from acting on it. This story has so much wisdom, seeing another perspective and forgiveness that at times brought me to good tears with it's sensitive writing.

Cassie Wilson fled her hometown of Montrose River as soon as she could. She's only home because her best friend wants her to be Godmother to daughter Emily. Cassie hopes to be a positive influence on Emily to show her how to dream big and see beyond small town. She has no relationship with her sister Ally or her Mom & Dad. Cassie is the only woman in the Flatiron Five partnership holding the marketing position. She loves Manhattan and her job. Reid Jackson is the kid from the wrong side of the tracks existing under the thumb of an abusing alcoholic father The town sees him as bad news. He discovers he has football talent and as quarterback got a college scholarship. NFL scouts were noticing and then a play goes wrong blowing both of his knees. He finishes college with a business degree and goes home to Montrose River now that his Dad died, and uses the settlement money to build a life and help the town. He's such a misunderstood good man. I fell in love with his quiet way of giving others a leg up. He and Cassie end up having a weekend fling planning to walk away from each other at the end of the weekend. Along the way, Reid shows Cassie there's a different way of looking at life and Cassie worms her way into his very hardened disillusioned heart. Small towns have so many secrets even though everyone knows what everyone is doing.

Deborah has a way of crafting a story that makes you think and tugs at your emotions. I fell in love with these characters and wanted so much for them to reach out and claim what could be if they could heal, forgive and trust. Yay, another winner Deborah. Thank you for the opportunity to review this story for you.

I truly love this series. If you have read any of Deborah’s other series or genres, it is amazing how different they are and how different her style of writing is with F5 versus her historical, for example.  Such a diverse author. Out of all the series I have read of her’s, this is definitely my absolute favorite series. Cassie is a character that I’ve been curious about ever since book one when she kept trying to seduce Ty. And when she got her tattoo how skeptical she was that she would ever find love made her more interesting. I wondered what type of guy would she fall for and Reid definitely stands out in the crowd. What starts out as a one-weekend stand, while she is back in her small hometown, definitely has sparks flying from the get go. It gives a glimpse into the type of people who are so ok with one-night stands and who seek out short term hookups. These two are definitely like that but they still come together naturally and the book spans months. She had her work cut out for her in trying to win him over and there were a few times I was not so sure she would succeed. When she finds out about his ex, her response was perfect!!  Her dark secret that she ends up revealing to Reid on the way to the airport to head back to NYC was shocking but his response was great and it was the first moment when I thought they just might work out. Loved every second. Loved that they took their time. Loved that the book had plenty of passion and romance and emotional tension and just great plot elements that came together to create a great story. Loved also getting to witness Kyle and Lauren’s wedding, which was so beautiful. Just. Plain. Loved. It.

In the 4th book of the Flatiron Five Series we see the romance of the one female partner at F5. Cassie Wilson is a strong, independent woman who's not afraid to go after what she wants - either in love or life.
Cassie goes home to her small town outside of Chicago for a Christening. She got out of town as soon as she could and swore to never come back but here she is. While there she mets Reid Jackson, a football star who had a promising future until her was injured and his playing career ended. When that happened he came home and began to quietly help the town to grow and prosper.
When they meet up for a one night stand they were both satisfied that that would be enough but they were wrong. For two people who didn't want a relationship with anyone they are drawn together like iron to a magnet.
The push and pull between them makes the Happily Ever After so much better.
I received a free advanced copy of this book.

Fourth book in the series, but it does work as a standalone. Lots of layers in this with multiple family issues. Good family background and history of Cassie, wanted to smack the mom with a "wakeup", she was almost too overbearing to put up with. Both characters are flawed with difficult backgrounds to overcome to finally find each other. Cassie could use more therapy, her obsession with Tyler is almost too much. Even though a lot of sex scenes, the story itself was good to pull those together. Was nice to catch up with the previous partners in earlier books.

Another masterful tale told by the fabulous Deborah Cooke. I just love all her stories.
Some Guys Have All The Luck is yet another example of how robust characters and a well thought out plot can come together to form a tale so real and full of life. At times I had to stop and wipe my eyes, other times I could be heard cackling aloud. The twists and turns in the plot were well navigated and credible. I was sucked in from the first chapter. Loved the main characters who were relatable and complex. Loved some of the supporting characters as well. I can't wait to read her next one! A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

I lost sleep over this book, I just couldn't put it down. The characters are so multidimensional with depths that you just have to keep reading to peel back their layers. Secrets upon secrets and family dynamics that keep you guessing for a good bit of the story are a small part of what makes this book a joy to read. Cassie and Reid are fabulous together and their chemistry palpable so you really root for them to work things out. Another good story in the Flatiron 5 series.

Of the 4 F5 books this is the best in my opinion. I appreciate Cassie's attitude and Reid's selflessness. The intimacy is marvelous. Next: On to the weddings and baby story. I hope you enjoy.

REVIEW: 4.25 stars--SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK is the fourth instalment in Deborah Cooke’s contemporary, adult FLATIRON FIVE erotic, romance series focusing on five friends-owners and proprietors of the exclusive Manhattan fitness club Flatiron Five-Tyler, Kyle, Damon, Cassie, and Theo. This is Cassie Wilson, and businessman Reid Jackson’s story line. SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Cassie and Reid) SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK follows Cassie Wilson as she returns to her hometown of Montrose River, Illinois, for a family christening. Fifteen years in New York, as the co-owner of the prestigious fitness club Flatiron Five, wasn’t long enough away from a town that held too many bad memories of a time long ago but Cassie promised her cousin Nick that she would be godmother to his daughter Emily. A quick run into the local Shop’n Save found Cassie face to face with the resident bad boy, Reid Jackson, a man who stirred something in Cassie she had long forgotten and didn’t want to remember. With neither one looking for anything permanent Cassie and Reid embark on a weekend fling that turns into something more. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Cassie and Reid as our couple struggle to come to terms with the demons from the past, secrets revealed, and moving towards a happily ever after.

SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK focuses on the small-town mentality where memories are long, gossip reigns, secrets and lies destroyed reputations and lives. Reid Jackson struggled to survive in a world of poverty and abuse growing up with an alcoholic father who wasn’t afraid to use his fists. Believing ‘like father, like son’ to be a self-fulfilling prophecy Reid doesn’t do relationships but focuses his efforts on helping the people of the town who despise him the most.

Cassie Wilson hasn’t returned home in close to fifteen years, to the town that all but destroyed her heart and her soul. Too many ghosts from the past, and the constant battle with her sister and mom, push Cassie to her limits ensuring no more visits to Montrose, Illinois. Old habits die hard, but the truth will free our story line couple.

The relationship between Cassie and Reid is one of insta-lust but neither one is willing to commit to more than today. Reid believes he is unworthy of love; and Cassie struggles to remain independent and alone. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and provocative with some light D/s scenarios.

All of the Flatiron Five owners play secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Cassie’s extended family; and byway of reflection and memories, we are introduced to Cassie’s Uncle Marty, a man who guided and mentored Reid Jackson into the man he would one day become.

SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK follows several intersecting and inter-related paths between the present and the past that have directly or indirectly affected our story line couple. Meddling friends and family continue to play matchmaker in the hopes of a happily ever after for Reid and Cassie, a happily ever after meant with somebody else. The premise is heart breaking, emotional and entertaining; the characters are broken, animated and embittered; the romance is sensual, spicy and hot. SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK is a raw, gritty and sensitive story where, ala Thomas Wolfe, it’s best not to go home again!

Heartbreaking and then bam! All solved.

I loved Cassie a lot more than I expected to. The first half of the book is amazing.

But then it fizzled for me, with a Grand Gesture that seemed to be too much, too soon, and out of character. I would have expected something more tentative that needs time to build.

I also found Reid one dimensional, which made his 180 even more jarring.

And I *hate* it when the fmc hits the mmc. His"don't apologise, I deserved it" was cringe worthy.

Still gets two stars for the first half.

Standalone (paet of a series). 3rd person all knowing pov. Flashbacks to violent scenes, mildly graphic. Steamy.

This review is of Some Guys Have All the Luck by Deborah Cooke.
Note: this review contains spoilers!
Reid Jackson doesn’t believe in luck. His father used to beat him. During the college football game when the NFL scouts were watching him, he was tackled by the other team and ended up having both knees replaced. He got a settlement and finished his college degree then went home to Montrose River and bought the small grocery store where he had worked. Then he bought the hardware store and a house big enough for 10 people.
But none of that was luck. It was hard work. Just about everything he had done in his life has been a negotiation including one night stands. If you don’t commit to someone, they can’t abandon you. They can’t lie about loving you. There’s just one girl he dreams about: the one from high school he couldn’t even talk to. Cassie Wilson.
Cassie has just about everything. She loves her job at Flatiron 5, loves her partners, loves her freedom. What she doesn’t love is Montrose River. She swore she would never go back, but her best friend asked her to to be the godmother of her little girl Emily. Cassie can’t refuse. What she doesn’t expect is Reid Jackson. Or that he owns half of the town. Or that she would fall so fast or so hard. Or that he would protect her and cherish her.
But both Reid and Cassie have secrets. Secrets they are both not willing to share until the right negotiations come along. Will the secrets destroy them or create one final negotiation? You will have to read this to find out!
I loved the characters and how the story line developed. Flatiron 5 sounds fascinating! Now I have to read the rest of the books in the series!

Some Guys Have All the Luck by Deborah Cooke is Cassie Wilson’s story, the lone female co-partner of the Flatiron Five. This series as a whole is much steamier than Deborah Cooke’s other series that I have read. Still there is no sacrificing of character development or plot line.

Cassie and Reid both return to the small town where both were raised. Both had bad experiences while growing up there. The past comes out as they become involved in the present. This is not a community at its best. Told effectively in dual POV, it is a compelling and attention holding story. As Cassie and Reid work through their negative relationships from the past, secrets that come to light and the doubt that they have concerning a lasting relationship in the here and now, I found myself rooting for them to overcome it all.

This is steamy, romantic, entertaining and heartwarming. Reid is a smart, kind, stubborn and fascinating loner. Cassie is a smart, strong, independent and caring woman. When they were young they barely acknowledged each other, though they were very aware of each other. Now, years later, they run into each other and decide that they will act on their attraction, but limit it to one night. Then Cassie needs a date to a christening and the relationship changes, no matter how much Reid refuses to accept that, he's fighting a losing battle. They storyline is heartbreaking and dramatic, but also sweet and romantic. The cast of characters is interesting, the situations sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but are always interesting. This is a great addition to a wonderful series.

Some Guys Have All The Luck (Flatiron5 #4)
This was an interesting read. Cassie Wilson is the lone woman in the F5 group- tall, athletic, blonde and vibrant; whom one of her partners calls “Domme Barbie”! So how was the story going to unfold so we could want her to win, when most would think her gifted enough? Reid Jackson seems underwhelming, because he came back to the hometown Cassie couldn’t wait to leave, and now owns the grocery store where he worked as a teenager.
A major underpinning of this series is the role and impact of honesty in attraction . The protagonists are in their early thirties, and this gives Ms Cooke a range of emotional nuances that twenty somethings don’t have. The sureties that come with some maturity are refreshing while the depths of self examination when a tenet is challenged

This was an entertaining, well-written contemporary romance. Cassie's life is going great. She doesn't really want to go back to her hometown, but her oldest friend asks her to be a godmother to her new baby so Cassie agrees to go home for a weekend. Reid has lived a life making his own luck through hard work. When Cassie and Reid see each other again they decide to have a weekend fling. At the end of the weekend Cassie realizes she wants more but Reid is sure he's not the man she wants him to be. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is part of the Flatiron Five series with inter-related characters. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more book in the series as well as other books by this author.

Cassie Wilson reluctantly returns to her hometown of Montrose River for a christening, but the bad memories she left behind threaten to overwhelm her. When she reconnects with “bad boy” Reid Jackson, their chemistry is instantaneous and scalding hot. Both initially agreeing to a friends with benefits relationship limited to the long weekend, little by little they begin to reveal themselves to each other, and intense feelings soon follow. As always, Ms. Cooke gives us well rounded, complex characters, an intriguing storyline which builds slowly, and scorching heat! Loved this book! *A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.*

Cassie is in her hometown Montrose River just for a weekend and doesn’t really expect it to be exciting. That is still she meets Reid Jackson, and connects instantly.
Reid liked Cassie when they were kids but didn’t do anything about it then. Now he has been given a second chance. Reid has a one night only rule, but with Cassie one turns to two and it still leave him wanting more.
Some guys have all the luck is a wonderful read. The characters are well written and have depth. I liked the way their issues were dealt with by the author.
I have been looking forward to Cassie’s story since I read Simply Irresistible and the wait was so worth it. Reid is the perfect hero for Cassie. Can’t wait to see the author has in store for Theo.

Loved this new story, it has the usual smooth flow and the organic unfolding of the story I love in Ms. Cooke’s books.

I really enjoyed learning more about Cassie and her past, she has quite a story. To carry that secret for so long… WOW
Reid is such a lovable guy and he came so far despite his childhood. Loved the chemistry between them, hot and sweet and real without the angst and drama so prevalent these days.

It is true in real life too, we only get to know somebody as far as they allow us to see or sometimes as far as we are willing despite having all the clues in front of us.

I can’t recommend this series enough.
