Following their New York Times- bestselling graphic novel Feynman , Jim Ottaviani and Leland Myrick deliver a gripping biography of Stephen Hawking, one of the most important scientists of our time.

From his early days at the St Albans School and Oxford, Stephen Hawking’s brilliance and good humor were obvious to everyone he met. A lively and popular young man, it’s no surprise that he would later rise to celebrity status.

At twenty-one he was diagnosed with ALS, a degenerative neuromuscular disease. Though the disease weakened his muscles and limited his ability to move and speak, it did nothing to limit his mind. He went on to do groundbreaking work in cosmology and theoretical physics for decades after being told he had only a few years to live. He brought his intimate understanding of the universe to the public in his 1988 bestseller, A Brief History of Time . Soon after, he added pop-culture icon to his accomplishments by playing himself on shows like Star Trek , The Simpsons , and The Big Bang Theory , and becoming an outspoken advocate for disability rights.

In Hawking , writer Jim Ottaviani and artist Leland Myrick have crafted an intricate portrait of the great thinker, the public figure, and the man behind both identities.

I've worked at news agencies and golf courses in the Chicagoland area, nuclear reactors in the U.S. and Japan, and libraries in Michigan. When I'm not staying up late writing comics about scientists, I'm spraining my ankles and flattening my feet by running on trails. Or I'm reading. I read a lot.

A dense and detailed biography that still managed to grab my attention on every page. A complete look at the life of Stephen Hawking, as well as an introductory course to many of his theories and general theories of physics. I haven't read a biography in a while, and this one was extremely refreshing. My only complaint is that Myrick's art felt consistently static, but perhaps that's appropriate for a biography. I've just breached the tip of the Hawking iceberg, so I'd like to read his own books especially now that I saw some of the processes behind them. Overall, this was a fantastic biography and an extremely educational one at that.

I'm kind of an easy mark for graphic novel biographies, I suppose. This one was really enjoyable, especially since I don't know anything at all about Stephen Hawking. Some of the math and science concepts here were beyond me, but the biographical details were well presented and really interesting. Definitely gave me a better appreciation for the man himself.

This book was interesting. I think that's the best thing I can say about it. The first half was absolute gibberish (unless you study physics) with little bits of Hawking's life sprinkled in. The second half of the book is much better. There was less math/science and more about the actual man behind all of it. I realize this book is not for me but there were other reasons for this rating. I found multiple spelling errors throughout the book that were rather distracting. If you are a science buff then this book will be great for you. If you are looking for a book on Hawking's life then look elsewhere. That being said I did enjoy the book once I got past the mathematics and science that confused the hell out of me.

This one is easy to summarize: a comics biography of Stephen Hawking.

Jim Ottaviani does his usual excellent job of bringing both the man and his ideas to life on the comics page, assisted by Leland Myrick on the art. It’s the same team that brought us the New York Times best seller, Feynman. Assuming they keep going with the science biographies, I’m curious as to who they will do next. I do know that, whatever Ottaviani writes, I’m there for it.

In any case, if you’ve ever been curious about Hawking as a person rather than as a celebrity, this is the book for you. Recommended!

Stephen Hawking has long been admired for his contributions to physics and space science despite being severely physically limited by the degenerative disease ALS. This was a fascinating look at the man's life and work. I really knew nothing about him as a person.

I won't pretend to understand even a quarter of the scientific content, but I appreciated that this graphic memoir forces its readers to reach up mentally and demands that we think about what we're reading. It's also another argument against the mistaken belief that comics are dumb or only for kids.

This book was tough because it gets in the way of its own success. Yes, a graphic novel would be a great format for a biography of someone like Hawking: trying to understand his world and mind is a big task and this medium should help make it more accessible. At the same time I found the actual visuals of this book unpleasant and a little unpolished. The text tended to be contained in over-sized white spaces and many speech bubbles were much larger than the content required. I also had a some trouble following some of the science, but I don't think that was prohibitive to following the story.

Received an advance copy from First Second and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A truly beautiful story that provides so much of the life of Stephen Hawking. It describes quite a lot of physics that can be sometimes hard to read but that's just for the context. This book inspired me, made me laugh, made me cry but also think alot about passion and relationships. Huge thank you for the authors.

Was steckt hinter dem Begriff Graphic Novel?

https://graphic-novel.info/was-sind-g...
Also gut, ein Roman in Form eines Comics. Ich war gespannt.

„Hawking“

„Hawkings Leben in Bildern“

Hawking Ottaviani Meine kleine Hawking Bibliothek

Ever since I met Jim Ottaviani at a Petoskey Booktopia, I'm always eager to read his newest book. I read this one in a single sitting. It can't have been an easy book to write since much has to do with Hawking's work, which I don't completely understand, but that didn't reduce my enjoyment of this book. I wish I could discuss this book with the author or someone else. I have opinions about the illustrations and some of the typeface. I still would encourage others to pick this one up.

If your science and biography sections don't have an Ottaviani/Myrick section yet, you may want to get to work on that. This is the second collaboration the two have worked on; the first being Feynman, a graphic biography on physicist and Nobel laureate Richard Feynman.

Hawking is in parts biography and science comic for teens and adults, moving easily back and forth between Stephen Hawking's life story and explanations of physics, black holes, and the universe at large. The story begins with Hawking's birth, 300 days to the day after Galileo's death, wanders through his early adolescence as a teen who speaks "Hawkingese" and appears socially awkward; his marriage to Jane Hawking and his diagnosis with motor neurone disease, also known as ALS; his research and ultimate pop culture fame, and his later years, second marriage, and the degenerative path of his disease. First and foremost, this is a story about science; there are pages devoted to discussions between defining voices, including Newton, Faraday, and Einstein, about cosmology, light, and gravity. Jim Ottaviani captures Hawking's voice - the graphic novel is narrated by a fictional Hawking - and shows up a glimpse of the man behind the legend. Award-winning illustrator Leland Myrick's artwork is unfussy, providing scientific sketches as easily as he captures Stephen Hawking's wry smirk and his ability to disappear into a cloud of physics, even in a crowded room. The end of Hawking's story will catch readers right in the feelings - I choked up a bit. An author's note discusses how graphic novels are a good medium for narrative nonfiction, and I couldn't agree more. Jim Ottaviani is an New York Times-bestselling author whose graphic biographies also include The Imitation Game (Alan Turing) and Primates (Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas), so the man knows how to plot out a graphic biography. There is a nice list of references that will give interested readers even more material to look through.

I love graphic novel bios - they're a great way to get tweens, teens, and adults interested in reading biographies, and the graphic medium allows for great explanations of topics that may be difficult in solid print (like physics!). If you have readers who have aged up from Science Comics, hand them Hawking. A definite must-add to your (growing!) graphic novel biographies.

So glad Ottaviani's books exist. Here, only a dauntingly ambitious go at explaining Hawking-level cosmology. This thoroughly overclocked my nearly-two-decades-old physics and astronomy degree, but thankfully I think it's more about getting the gist of it and appreciating Hawking's style. It also manages to be an effective and interesting biography, in case you are the kind of person who wants to read the Personal Life section of a famous scientist's Wikipedia page. (I am.)

As an English major, I have gaps in my knowledge of the world. I did take physics in high school but a lot of it went over my head. I still feel I have a stronger grasp on science than a lot of my fellow English majors, but certainly much less than my younger sister who was a physics major. I went into this book thinking it would either be a light overview of Hawking's life for the English-major set, or a graphic novelization of the movie from a few years ago. Neither is at all the case. It is a deep dive into his life, fully covering all of the physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.

Most of you probably know the back story. He was a super-smart but slightly bratty teen at college when he started having some issues with walking and balance and was eventually diagnosed with ALS. He was given just a year or two to live, and then lived another 50+, changing the face of these scientific arenas along the way. He was a brilliant scientist but perhaps trying to live with, eventually marrying a couple of times. He didn't take himself super-seriously, sometimes tweaking fellow scientists, and even appearing in pop culture TV shows late in life.

The science is well done and accessible for lay people, but it does make the book very dense (haha--I don't mean in a physical way although I bet given the length and the type of paper used that it also is heavy. I read a digital version.) I very much enjoyed it, but it wasn't a book I could plot through in just a couple of hours. It took several days as I'd read for a while and then have to take a mental break to absorb. That said, I do think I understood 70% of the science which is way better than I did in my actual physics class, and the visualizations of a lot of his theories really helped immensely. You might not think that a man who was more or less all mind and useless body for most of his life, would present itself well for a very graphic format, but the illustrations of his theories went a long way towards my understanding. I'm sure I'll lose this pretty soon, but immediately after reading it, I feel smarter!

This graphic novel biography of Stephen Hawking did not limit itself to his life. It also spent time covering the history of his science and some of the development of the cosmological theories which he developed in his lifetime. The skill of the author us in the graphic novel as such a powerful medium for a biography is unsurprising considering that he has written several others explaining such things as the history of space flight, women in primatology, and (I recently found out and want to buy) Feynman.
The main character was, of course Stephen Hawking, and the author and illustrator did a superb job of showing his physical decline while not making it (except of a few pages) a central figure in the book. The other major character was Hawking's first wife Jane and I found myself wondering at the amount of access that the author must have had. Jane was portrayed as truly in love and devoted to a man who was often distracted and nearly dismissive of her. Such is the skill of the graphic narrative that you can feel the the relationship descend into problems before ultimately ending in divorce without it being explicitly stated.
To me, the book does an excellent job of portraying a life of an icon with idolization, of presenting difficult science understandably (as Hawking eventually was able to do himself), and of telling the story of an important physicist in a way that is approachable by people from early high school on up. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about Stephen Hawking than his brief stints on the Simpsons and Big Bang Theory.

I started reading this and soon got caught up in the life story of Stephen Hawking. The black and white drawings in the book brought his story to life and also helped illustrate the science in the book. Now I've always found science fascinating so this book was right up my alley. It tells when they developed the idea of a black hole and near the end of the book they explain where the stuff that goes into a black hole goes. I think almost everyone wonders about that, right? Well it seems that Hawking spent his life trying to figure out the mysteries surrounding black holes. The math involved is way too complex for the average person (did you ever see that kind of math and the weird symbols it uses...what does it even mean?) but the ideas can be explained in words. So people can understand. And so now I know where the stuff sucked in goes and what happens to it. But the idea that surprised me the most was the one about how a black hole could shrink and vanish over time. I never heard that before! The book of course also covers his illness, ALS. But the science is the heart of this book.

The artwork is simple but nice.

This just didn't work for me. It was a combination of the formatting (tiny font on cluttered images) and the contents itself. I wouldn't recommend this as a sort of introduction to what he studied, as this focuses way more on his studies and sciences than his life.

I'm a big fan of the Jim Ottaviani's graphic biographies, having read Feynman and Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas before and planning to read The Imitation Game. Although pitched to children, they are reasonably sophisticated in the science they convey and show a lot of the rough edges and more problematic parts of thee lives. This biography of Hawking was a cradle-to-grave story that attempted to convey his major scientific discoveries, his life/illness, and his role as a popularizer of science. The excitement around the rapidly evolving research on black holes and their role in cosmology in the late 1960s and early 1970s is conveyed well. I found the way that the Soviet Union was and was not engaged on these scientific matters particularly interesting. I also had not appreciated how much time and effort he put into A Brief History of Time.

This graphic biography is an excellent introduction to Hawking, and if you've got older kids into Physics, or if you recall feeling betrayed when told that "zero factorial equals one" in primary school, than this might be one your really enjoy too. The art is good, and yes, it is rather dense - but we are talking about some mighty concepts here. I was on board for every brain tingling moment.

I'm in a book club with a couple of friends from college. We all live in different states, so we meet online. Our club started in the summer of 2014 and has met nearly every month since then.

It was this book, a biographical GN about Stephen Hawking, which spawned what is almost certainly the raunchiest book club discussion we have had in our nearly 9 year history.

This was really cool. The illustrations to help demonstrate the concepts was really helpful. It is a little more heavy on Hawking's theories than I expected, but it has a nice balance of biography and science. Now I'm more excited to read the book he wrote with his daughter. I got a bulk box of it from First Book to distribute to students.
