Review of the Finnish edition.

Stakes get high in the third volume of Inspector Akane Tsunemori, the manga adaptation of Psycho-Pass anime!
Let’s say the most important thing first: this volume is excellent!!! The story gets more intense and twisted and we get to see more sides of the characters.

The cases are interesting even when we readers know what’s going on; it’s about the chase and battle of wits, not a whodunnit thing. The murderer who makes art out of the victims reminds me of NBC’s Hannibal tv show, there’s a lot of about psychological analysis why the murderer does the things the way they do and how Kogami uses that to solve the case with Akane. They also consult a professor specializing in profiling when they begin tracking the person pulling the strings behind the curtains of recent cases. Interesting aspect is that it’s obsolete tool in the manga’s world but should it be? Has Sibylla system really made this kind of psychology useless?

Then Kogami is forced into a deadly maze hunt. It’s an old concept but it doesn’t make it bad, it’s almost always exciting and that goes for this time too. We see Kogami excel in action and deduction and learn just how good he is at his job. He’s not invincible though and that leads to a very shocking finish for this volume (whoa! I didn’t see that one coming!).

Akane gets her moments in this book too. I really liked when she challenged Ginoza when he critized her too harshly in front of others. She’s very professional but she acknowledges being new but that doesn’t mean she will be a punching bag. Akane gets truly tried mentally at the end of the volume and I’m interested to see how she will deal with it. Her strong sense of justice but also will to see people as human and consider circumstances makes her very nice main character to follow. She starts a bit meek but grows steadly. And she has her cute moments too! I’ve really grown to like her.

The worldbuilding is subtle and solid and is one of the strong aspects of the series. I really enjoy when the characters discuss the psychological matters and there’s a lot of good thought-crunching about people’s motives (criminal and otherwise), the way latent criminals are treated and how a human mind works. The cases are well-written and the twists feel impactful. I like that the story is mature and thought-provoking but also an exciting police drama.

Art looks really good and is expressive and easy to read. Action looks quite good too. Print is crisp and there’s a colour mini poster attached!

Highly recommended! Readers who aren’t familiar with manga could enjoy this too, so I’m urging everybody to check this out.

Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.

The third volume of Inspector Akane Tsunemori continues the Psycho-Pass narrative from cyberpunk procedural to futuristic grand guignol. In this installment, we spend more time with mad artist Rikako Oryou, whom (we learn) is avenging her artist father's descent into a coma through a complete lack of stress - the ultimate end point of the Sybil System's control of the human psyche. Lest we sympathize with Rikako, she reveals this to us while in bed with the fresh corpse of one of her victims - a sign that Psycho-Pass isn't slowing its descent into madness. Back at the Public Safety Bureau, Inspector Ginoza takes Kogami off the case because it reminds him of an identical past murder by a different culprit - a revelation that allows Akane to plumb her subordinate's troubled backstory, while facing her own professional crisis when she satisfyingly calls out Ginoza's smug condescension and bad judgment. Rikako is ultimately bested not by the police but Toyohisa Senguji, a rich cyborg who tries to keep his mind youthful by hunting humans for sport - and after a mindblowing encounter with the young artist, sets Kogami in his sights. But all are pawns in the hands of Shogo Makashima, who confronts Akane with graphic evidence of the Sybil System's flaws - namely, that he retains a clear psycho-pass, even as he prepares to murder Akane's friend Yuki. This volume covers an awful lot of ground (roughly six episodes of the anime), and some elements are compressed - less of the philosophic banter between Makashima and Senguji, in particular, which keeps the plot moving if nothing else. If Makishima's motives still seem opaque, they're drowned in the savage imagery of Rikako's deadly art, Senguji's human fox hunt, fresh details about the Sybil System (latent criminals are kept in a mental institution with poison gas on demand), and a brutal finale that pushes Akane (and the reader) to the breaking point. Not for the faint of heart, but if you've made it this far in the series you're likely tuned to Psycho-Pass's wavelength already...just make sure your hue doesn't get clouded.

The Catcher in the Rye.

I seem to differ from the majority with this one but personally I found this volume a bit dull? Like so much was happening but I found myself not really caring about that - which is a pity because I really loved the first two volumes, hoping it will pick up for me toward the end!
